We describe a case of septic arthritis caused by Staphylococcus pseudintermedius, a common colonizer of dogs that has emerged as a rare human pathogen. Our patient presented with ankle pain and swelling and was treated adequately with cefazolin/cephalexin and arthrotomy. S. pseudintermedius is often misidentified as other coagulase-positive staphylococcal species and has high rates of methicillin and nonpenicillin antibiotic resistance.

Three cases of fatal anaphylaxis to penicillin and cephalexin are described. All three patients had prior histories of severe allergic reactions to the antibiotics they were given. The radioallergosorbent test was positive on post-mortem blood to the appropriate antibiotic in all three cases. RAST can be performed on post-mortem specimens of serum, sodium fluoride-treated blood, or whole blood.

We tested in vitro the activities of streptomycin and tetracycline--antibiotics that have long been used to treat rhinoscleroma--as well as several newer oral agents by using 23 isolates of the causative organism Klebsiella rhinoscleromatis. Bacterial isolates from expressed prostatic secretions were tested in vitro for susceptibility to five antimicrobial agents used in the treatment of prostatitis. Comparisons of susceptibility and resistance were made between minocycline and each of the other four agents: tetracycline, cephalexin, ampicillin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. A high percentage of the isolates from patients with prostatitis which were resistant to tetracycline and trimethoprimsulfamethoxazole were susceptible to minocycline.

We describe a submandibular suppurative lymphatic abscess caused by Salmonella typhi in an 8-year-old child. The diagnosis was confirmed by repeated isolation of S. typhi from the abscess. A literature search found no previous report of a similar nature and this therefore seems to be the first case report of focal suppurative typhoidal lymphatic abscess. The child responded to cephalexin and surgical drainage.

A case of osteomyelitis of the mandible caused by actinomyces infection is described. Gram stain and cultures of the discharge in fluid thioglycolate medium and blood agar, as well as an analysis of the biochemical properties of the causative organism with API system, indicated the infection was caused by A israelii. Lesions in both hard and soft tissues responded to chemotherapy with cephalexin, minocycline, and aminobenzylpenicillin and drainage of the pus from the cutaneous abscesses.
