We report here a rare case of high cervical stenosis at the level of atlas who presented with progressively deteriorating quadriparesis and respiratory distress. A 10-year-old boy presented with above symptoms of one-year duration with a preceding history of trivial trauma prior to onset of such symptoms. Cervical spine MRI revealed a significant stenosis at the level of atlas from the posterior side with a syrinx extending above and below. High-resolution computed tomography of the above level yielded an ill-defined osseous bar compressing the canal at the level of C(1) posterior arch, which

PURPOSE: The uppermost segment of the cervical vertebra or atlas (C1) is a critically important anatomical structure, housing the medulla oblongata and containing the grooves for the C1 spinal nerve and the vertebral vessels. Variations of the C1 vertebra can affect upper spine stability, and morphometric parameters have been reported to differ by population. However, there are few data regarding these parameters in Thais. The use of this bone to predict sex and age has never been reported.
METHODS: This study aimed to examine C1 morphometry and determine its ability to predict sex. Twelve di

A case is described of a child aged twelve with rib abnormalities, a Klippel-Feil syndrome and a complete fusion between C2 and C7. The atlas showed abnormal ossification of the anterior and posterior arches. No similar description has been found in the literature. A posterior spine fusion between C1 and C2 was performed.

A case is presented in which the patient sustained a complete dislocation of the odontoid process in front of the anterior arch of the first cervical vertebra. There was no fracture of the arch of C-1 vertebra. The patient was treated successfully by trans-oral excision of the odontoid process and the anterior arch of C-1. Twenty days later the patient's spine was stabilized posteriorly at C-1 through C-3 with wire and methyl-methacrylate.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to evaluate and compare the bridging and dimensions of the sella turcica and calcification of the ponticulus posticus in subjects with different dental anomalies.
METHODS: Pretreatment records of orthodontic patients with palatally impacted canines (n = 95), mandibular second premolar agenesis (n = 45), maxillary lateral incisor agenesis (n = 75), tooth transpositions (TT, n = 25), peg-shaped maxillary lateral incisors (n = 30), and third molar agenesis (TMA, n = 145) were analyzed and compared with the control group (CG) consisting of 145 subjects with skeletal

Thirty-five consecutive odontoid views were taken using a standardized technique. A 10-mm radiographic marker was positioned lateral to the tip of the C-1 transverse process. Data from three independent readers showed an 18% magnification error inherent to anteroposterior open-mouth odontoid radiographs. Integrity of the transverse ligament after Jefferson fractures has been inferred from the separation of the lateral masses measured on the odontoid view. Spence's anatomic study showed that lateral mass separation of > 6.9 mm implied rupture, but radiograph magnification was not taken into acc

BACKGROUND: Congenital muscular torticollis is a common childhood musculoskeletal anomaly that might result in permanent craniofacial deformity, facial asymmetry, and changes in the cervical vertebrae, if not treated during early childhood. Although there have been many studies on cervical vertebral changes, their onset in children has not been previously studied.
METHODS: Fifteen patients (aged <8 years) with a confirmed diagnosed of torticollis were included. Three-dimensional computed tomography scans were obtained, and segmentation of the cervical vertebrae was done. Division of the atlas

Nine patients who had os odontoideum with posterior atlantoaxial instability are reviewed. Three parameters were measured on the lateral radiographs: the distance from the os odontoideum to the spinous process of the axis in extension (Dext), the distance from the os odontoideum to the posterior arch of the atlas (Datl), and the degree of instability (Inst). Patients were classified into four groups: Group I, local symptoms (N = 3); Group II, transient myelopathy (N = 0); Group III, progressive myelopathy (N = 6); and Group IV, cerebral symptoms (N = 0). The development of cervical myelopathy
