The sperm acrosome reaction (AR) is a crucial step for mammalian fertilization. This work describes experiments to test the effect of the cesium ion (Cs+) and charybdotoxin (ChTX) on the Ca2+ or Na+/K+ ionophores stimulated hamster sperm AR in vitro. Cs+ and ChTX, a polypeptide toxin from the venom of the scorpion Leirus quinquestriatus, are considered blockers of Ca(2+)-activated K+ channels in several somatic cells. Six cases of adenocarcinoma of the endometrium associated with the Stein-Leventhal syndrome are presented. The average age of the patients was 27.8 years. All patients were treated surgically; 2 had preoperative intracavitary irradiation, and 1 had postoperative intravaginal cesium-137 application. At follow-up, ranging from 1 to 15 years, all patients are alive and free of disease. This exploratory study compared surface and optical properties of non-equivalent ZnO formulations deposited on ex vivo chicken skin. Non-irradiated ZnO mixture was compared to nominally 137 Cs-exposed ZnO prepared in multiple dilutions.
