Chickenpox is considered as a mild disease, but sometimes it is associated with complications. Among them sialadenitis is mentioned sporadically. We describe a case of the 6-year-old girl suffering from complicated chickenpox. On the basis of clinical data and ultrasound image we diagnosed in her inflammation of both submandibular glands. Moreover, the ultrasound image suggested possibility of an inflammation developing in the left parotid gland.

There are inconsistencies in how newborns are managed following exposure to varicella, ranging from reassurance and observation to administration of varicella zoster immunoglobulin (VZIG) and admission to hospital for varying length courses of intravenous aciclovir.Hospitalised preterm babies exposed to varicella should receive VZIG. Administration can otherwise be limited to pregnant non-immune women or to newborns if there is development of maternal chickenpox from 5 days prior to delivery up to 48 hours postdelivery. Intravenous aciclovir is only recommended in cases of newborn disease desp…

INTRODUCTION: Chickenpox is highly contagious childhood disease which occurs as a result of varicella-zoster virus primary infection. Symptomatic therapy is usually adequate for chickenpox, but in some cases it requires combinations of antiviral drugs and antibiotics.
OBJECTIVES: To present our expirience with chickenpox therapy in children and adult patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Study included 120 randomly chosen patients, 60 adults and 60 children, with confirmed chickenpox infection, hospitalised at Clinic for infectious diseases in Sarajevo. Observed period was 1st January 2005. to 30t…

OBJECTIVE: To report occupationally related outbreak of chickenpox in intensive care unit (ICU).
CASE PRESENTATION AND INTERVENTION: The index patient was a 4-year-old child who presented with a 3-day history of fever and rash and was clinically diagnosed as chickenpox encephalitis. She was admitted to an isolation room in ICU, kept on oxygen mask and given intravenous fluids, anticonvulsant, antipyretic and acyclovir. Twelve hours later, the patient was transferred to Infectious Diseases Hospital. Secondary cases were three unvaccinated ICU staff nurses who developed chickenpox 16-21 days fo…

AIMS: To estimate the annual incidence of hospitalisations due to severe complications of varicella, describe the complications and estimate annual mortality.
METHODS: Active surveillance throughout the UK and Ireland for 13 months by paediatricians notifying cases to the British Paediatric Surveillance Unit and completing a questionnaire. The case definition was any child aged <16 years hospitalised with complicated varicella, as defined by a list of conditions, or admitted to ICU/HDU with varicella.
RESULTS: 188 cases were notified for the surveillance period, of which 112 (0.82/100 000 ch

BACKGROUND: The ability to differentiate chickenpox from smallpox is important for early recognition of bioterrorism events and prevention of false alarms. The febrile prodrome is a clinical feature used to differentiate these conditions. However, the prevalence of prodromal manifestations in chickenpox has not been well established.
METHODS: We evaluated prodrome characteristics of all chickenpox cases identified through an active varicella surveillance program over a 21-month period. The frequencies of various prodromal manifestations among vaccinated and unvaccinated case patients were ass…

A 41-year-old woman with chickenpox in the third trimester of her pregnancy was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of our hospital for ventilatory support. She was treated with aciclovir, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid and erythromycin. Her baby was delivered by forceps following placental abruption. After delivery, both mother and child recovered slowly but could eventually leave the hospital in good condition. If a pregnant woman without a prior history of varicella-zoster infection is exposed to a child that has chickenpox, passive immunisation with varicella-zoster immunoglobulin should be a…

The case of a healthy and immunocompetent five-year-old boy, who developed a disseminated intravascular coagulation during chickenpox is described. Disseminated intravascular coagulation manifestations were extremely severe and included macroscopic hematuria, necrotic purpura and cerebrovascular thrombosis. The outcome in this patient was a complete recovery. Nevertheless, the possibility of a seriously complicated course of chickenpox even in low-risk children subgroups suggests that the Varicella-Zoster virus infection should not be underestimated. More accurate information about the impact …

Reinfection of previously "immune" patients with varicella-zoster virus can result in recurrent chickenpox. However, relapses of chickenpox are not well recognized. We describe a young man with lymphoma who rapidly developed multiple, discrete relapses of chickenpox each time therapy with acyclovir was stopped. His cutaneous infection eventually became unremitting, despite continuous treatment with acyclovir. No evidence ever suggested visceral dissemination of varicella. The patient died suddenly; the cause of death was not determined.

Authors describe a child affected by chickenpox, Schönlein-Henoch purpura and nephropathy. The ecchymotic lesions were diffused in buttocks and legs and they were associated with vesicular haemorrhagic injury in the back of hands and in pavilions of the ears. They suggest that varicella-zoster virus can play a "trigger" role in etiopathogenesis of Schönlein-Henoch purpura and that this syndrome worsens the renal failure. Steroids don't improve the renal disease in the acute phase but they seem to reduce the relapses.

Chickenpox (varicella) is caused by infection with the varicella-zoster virus (VZV), a neurotropic alpha herpes virus with a double-stranded DNA genome. Chickenpox can cause life-threatening complications, including subsequent bacterial infections, central nervous system symptoms, and even death without any risk factors. Few studies have been reported to investigate genetic susceptibility implicated in chickenpox. Herein, our study identified global genetic variants that potentially contributed to chickenpox susceptibility by utilizing the established bioinformatic-based approach. We integrate…

Some societies tolerate or encourage high levels of chickenpox infection among children to reduce rates of shingles among older adults. This tradeoff is unethical. The varicella zoster virus (VZV) causes both chickenpox and shingles. After people recover from chickenpox, VZV remains in their nerve cells. If their immune systems become unable to suppress the virus, they develop shingles. According to the Exogenous Boosting Hypothesis (EBH), a person's ability to keep VZV suppressed can be 'boosted' through exposure to active chickenpox infections. We argue that even if this hypothesis were true…

Kawasaki disease is a group of acute febrile illnesses of young children. Infectious etiology for Kawasaki disease has been long postulated, … nted by early treatment if clinicians are alert to this possible association in those children with chickenpox exhibiting unusual muco-cutaneous lesions.
