Sex differences in bone growth of broiler chickens.

Females are often supposed to have a lighter skeleton than males, even in avian domestic species. However, in broiler chickens, females are less susceptible to bone deformities than males. In order to better understand these conflicting facts, male and female broilers were compared for the growth of cortical bone. Morphology, histomorphometry, composition and biomechanical properties of the tibiotarsi were analysed in both sexes at 1, 12, 26 and 42 days of age. The quantity of bone tissue of the tibiotarsus (weight, volume, diameter of the diaphysis, area of the cortex) was smaller in females,…

Production of chickens with marginal vitamin A deficiency.

Marginally vitamin A-deficient 1-d-old chickens capable of remaining healthy for at least 6 weeks were produced using a two-generation model. In this model, hens fed on diets with a limited vitamin A content were used to obtain 1-d-old chickens which were marginally deficient in vitamin A. Only hens with a narrow range of plasma retinol values (0.60-0.85 mumol/l) were satisfactory for this purpose. Above this range the 1-d-old chickens were not marginally vitamin A deficient. Below this range egg production and hatchability were affected to some extent depending on the degree of vitamin A defi…

Pathogenicity of latent infectious laryngotracheitis virus in chickens.

Groups of specific pathogen-free chickens were inoculated with the same dose of a field strain of infectious laryngotracheitis virus that had either been isolated from tracheal swabs taken from infected birds during acute phase shedding, or that had been isolated during an episode of virus shedding after a latent period of 12 to 17 weeks. Birds in both groups developed characteristic clinical signs of ILT including difficulty in breathing, rales and sneezing. Thus, ILT virus shed after a latent period is capable of causing disease in susceptible birds similar to that seen in the field.

Pathobiology of cryptosporidiosis (C. baileyi) in broiler chickens.

Pathologic and clinicopathologic changes were examined in broiler chickens inoculated with Cryptosporidium baileyi (Cb) alone or in combination with infectious bronchitis virus (IBV), infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) or Escherichia coli (Ec). Concurrent infections with Cb and either IBV or Ec resulted in a greater respiratory inflammatory response than either agent given alone. Concurrent Cb, IBV or Ec infections resulted in a decreased density of respiratory cryptosporidial stages. No interactions between Cb and IBDV were observed. Clinicopathologic results in broiler chicks exhibiting …

Rapid cytologic diagnosis of respiratory cryptosporidiosis in chickens.

A method is presented for the rapid cytologic detection of cryptosporidial oocysts in Diff-Quik and modified Kinyoun acid-fast-stained tracheal imprints. On Diff-Quik-stained preparations, cryptosporidial oocysts were observed attached to the apical ends of respiratory epithelial cells or scattered throughout the imprint. These oocysts were round to oval, measured approximately 6 to 7 micron in diameter, and appeared faintly blue with fine pink granules. In modified Kinyoun acid-fast-stained tracheal imprints, the oocysts usually were pink to bright red against a blue background. Cytologic exa

Peripheral neuropathy of dietary riboflavin deficiency in chickens.

A strain of rapidly growing meat-type chickens was fed a diet deficient in riboflavin from 1-40 days of age. Diminished growth rate, progressive gait abnormality and reluctance to move were noted beginning on day 8. Neurologic abnormalities were related to peripheral neuropathy characterized by Schwann cell hypertrophy and degeneration with cytoplasmic lipid droplets' and segmental demyelination. Lesions were initially detected on day 10, and in concert with clinical signs became more profound between days 14 and 21. Sequestration of myelin debris within Schwann cells was common. Other feature…

In vitro excystation of Cryptosporidium baileyi from chickens.

Release of sporozoites from the oocysts of Cryptosporidium baileyi is described from Nomarski interference-contrast microscopy. Just prior to excystation, the four sporozoites became motile and rearranged themselves within the oocyst. The sporozoites were then rapidly expelled through an opening that formed in the oocyst wall, and the residuum was either released or retained within the oocyst. Excysted sporozoites were crescent shaped and measured 5.0-9.0 microns X 1.0-1.6 micron (mean = 6.8 X 1.1 microns). Excystation occurred when sodium taurocholate or a mixture of trypsin and sodium tauroc

Cases of type C botulism in broiler chickens.

Twenty-seven cases of type C botulism were studied in integrated broiler operations on the Delmarva Peninsula. Single and repeated outbreaks in broiler flocks were observed. No botulinum toxin was found in litter and feed samples despite repeated testing. Clostridium botulinum type C was cultured from litter, feed, and tissues of morbid and clinically normal chickens sampled from farms in which flocks experienced botulism. Clostridium botulinum type C could not be cultured from tissues of clinically normal chickens taken from a farm without a flock history of botulism or from caged broilers re…

Calcitonin from ultimobranchial glands of dogfish and chickens.

Acid extracts of thyroid glands from a small shark Squalus suckleyi and domestic fowl Gallus domestica contained no detectable calcitonin activity, while very potent hypocalcemic responses were obtained in rats with similar extracts from the ultimobranchial glands of these two species. The calcitonin concentration was 4 to 40 times that present in hog thyroid, which, as in most other mammals, contains ultimobranchial tissue. The evidence suggests that calcitonin is a fundamental calcium-regulating hormone present in all higher vertebrates and that it is an ultimobranchial rather than a thyroid

Occurrence and molecular characterization of Cryptosporidium oocysts in chickens from Egypt, and a meta-analysis for Cryptosporidium infections in chickens worldwide.

Cryptosporidium is a leading cause of diarrhea in children and immunocompromised patients. Various animals and birds can also be infected with this protist, and Cryptosporidium zoonosis is common. A few reports have been published worldwide on Cryptosporidium infections in chickens. The present study surveyed Cryptosporidium infections in chickens from Dakahlia governorate, Egypt. Cryptosporidium oocysts were tested, using the Ziehl Neelsen modified acid-fast staining, in 884 chickens collected from various farms and live bird markets (LBMs) in Dakahlia governorate, Egypt. COWP (Cryptosporidiu…
