Too hot to sleep? Sleep behaviour and surface body temperature of Wahlberg's Epauletted Fruit Bat.

The significance of sleep and factors that affect it have been well documented, however, in light of global climate change the effect of temperature on sleep patterns has only recently gained attention. Unlike many mammals, bats (order: Chiroptera) are nocturnal and little is known about their sleep and the effects of ambient temperature (Ta) on their sleep. Consequently we investigated seasonal temperature effects on sleep behaviour and surface body temperature of free-ranging Wahlberg's epauletted fruit bat, Epomophorus wahlbergi, at a tree roost. Sleep behaviours of E. wahlbergi were record…

Can rabies be eradicated?

Rabies, an acute progressive encephalitis, is an ancient zoonosis. Its distribution encompasses all continents, except Antarctica. Agents consist of at least 11 species orgenotypes of rhabdoviruses, in the Genus Lyssavirus. Susceptible natural hosts include all mammals. Primary reservoirs reside in the Orders Carnivora and Chiroptera. A plethora of variants, maintained by a diversity of abundant hosts, presents a challenge to a strict concept of true eradication. Globally, the domestic dog remains the most significant species for viral transmission, responsible for millions of suspect human ex…

Rabies: epidemiological tendencies and control tools.

Rabies encephalitis still generates 50,000 human deaths/year. It is due to neuron infection by lyssaviruses. Seven genotypes (GT) are currently distinguished within the Lyssavirus genus which segregate in two phylogroups (PG). This classification is constantly evolving due to isolation of new lyssaviruses within bat populations. Functional differences exist between GTs in term of neurotropism, pathogenesis, induction of apoptosis, immunogenicity, and their molecular basis are starting to be elucidated. Lyssavirus vectors are mammals, preferentially from the Carnivora and Chiroptera orders. Phy…

Strategies and limitations of the bat immune response to Pseudogymnoascus destructans: the causative agent of white-nose syndrome.

The rapid spread of white-nose syndrome (WNS), an invasive fungal pathogen in bats caused by the psychrophilic fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, represents one of the most severe ongoing wildlife disease crises in North America. Since its emergence in 2006, WNS has driven drastic population declines in several ecologically and economically important bat species, including Myotis lucifugus. Once widespread and abundant, M. lucifugus is now designated as vulnerable or endangered in several jurisdictions, such as under Ontario's Species at Risk Act (SARA). Despite this, current gaps in underst

Optimising bat-friendly curtailment algorithms for wind turbines.

Wind turbines worldwide cause high mortality in long-lived bats through collisions. To mitigate these impacts, operators commonly apply blanket curtailment by stopping turbine blades under low wind speed and mild temperature, when bat activity is often high and energy production is low. Nevertheless, this approach shows highly variable effectiveness. More advanced curtailment tools exist, but evidence for their efficiency and practical implementation remains limited. Using acoustic monitoring data collected over 25,588 nights at 123 wind turbine nacelles in France, we trained algorithms to pre

Cave-dwelling bats as hosts of Trypanosoma livingstonei: Evidence from peri-domestic roosts in southeastern Nigeria.

Bats play important roles in ecosystem functioning and host a remarkable diversity of blood parasites, including a limited number of bat-associated Trypanosoma species that have been described from Africa. Cave roosts provide critical habitat for bats and often support large, multispecies aggregations that may influence parasite transmission dynamics. Nevertheless, the diversity and host associations of trypanosomes within these environments remain poorly characterized, particularly in West Africa. To address this gap, we screened blood and ectoparasite samples from 57 bats representing ten sp

A survey of vector-borne bacteria in bat-associated mites (Mesostigmata: Macronyssidae and Spinturnicidae) from Brazil reveals the presence of Ehrlichia spp.

Macronyssid and spinturnicid mites are globally distributed ectoparasites of medical and veterinary relevance, with various species known to parasitize bats. Beyond their ecological importance, some macronyssid mites, such as Ornithonyssus bursa, are known to occasionally bite humans and cause dermatitis, highlighting the interface between wildlife, ectoparasites, and human habitats. Understanding the microorganisms harbored by bat-associated mites is therefore important from a One Health perspective, as these arthropods may act as bridge hosts for pathogens among bats, domestic animals, and h

Atlas of gross, histologic, and immunohistologic anatomy of the lymphoid system in Egyptian rousettes (Rousettus aegyptiacus).

Chiropterans exhibit remarkable immunological adaptations that facilitate their function as competent reservoir hosts for diverse high-consequence zoonotic viruses while maintaining apparent clinical health. The Egyptian rousette (Rousettus aegyptiacus), a frugivorous pteropodid species, represents the sole confirmed natural reservoir for Marburg and Ravn viruses (family Filoviridae), yet comprehensive characterization of its lymphoid system architecture remains absent from the literature. This investigation presents the first systematic gross, histological, and immunohistochemical atlas of ly…

Viral epidemic potential is not uniformly distributed across the bat phylogeny.

Characterizing host-virus associations is critical due to the rising frequency of emerging infectious diseases originating from wildlife. Past analyses have evaluated zoonotic risk as binary, but virulence, transmissibility, and death burden can vary dramatically. Recent work suggests bats harbor more viruses with high virulence in humans than other taxa. However, it remains unknown whether all bats harbor viruses of equal viral epidemic potential. We used phylogenetic factorization to flexibly identify clades of mammals (at any taxonomic level) associated with low or high viral epidemic poten

Detection and Prevalence of Coronaviruses in European Bats: A Systematic Review.

Bats are known hosts for a wide range of coronaviruses (CoVs), including those that cause severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS-CoV-1) and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS-CoV). With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, it has become increasingly important to understand the diversity and prevalence of CoVs in bat populations. This systematic review aimed to compile studies that have sampled CoVs from bats across Europe and assessed various aspects related to the testing of bat samples, including the country where the bats were collected, the CoV genomi

Bats experience age-related hearing loss (presbycusis).

Hearing loss is a hallmark of aging, typically initially affecting the higher frequencies. In echolocating bats, the ability to discern high frequencies is essential. However, nothing is known about age-related hearing loss in bats, and they are often assumed to be immune to it. We tested the hearing of 47 wild Egyptian fruit bats by recording their auditory brainstem response and cochlear microphonics, and we also assessed the cochlear histology in four of these bats. We used the bats' DNA methylation profile to evaluate their age and found that bats exhibit age-related hearing loss, with mor

Histopathological survey of free-ranging neotropical bats with dermatitis.

Bats have a fundamental ecological role, and no wildlife disease has decimated more individuals than white-nose syndrome (WNS). This impactful mycosis has raised the importance of monitoring disease threats to bat populations. In this study, we aimed to investigate gross skin lesions in neotropical bats by histopathology to survey the occurrence of dermatitis that could resemble WNS cases in Brazil. Eleven species of free-ranging bats were sampled from the rabies surveillance program in 9 municipalities of Northern Paraná. Members of the Molossidae family were the most frequent ones among the

Ear pinnae in a neotropical katydid (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae) function as ultrasound guides for bat detection.

Early predator detection is a key component of the predator-prey arms race and has driven the evolution of multiple animal hearing systems. Katydids (Insecta) have sophisticated ears, each consisting of paired tympana on each foreleg that receive sound both externally, through the air, and internally via a narrowing ear canal running through the leg from an acoustic spiracle on the thorax. These ears are pressure-time difference receivers capable of sensitive and accurate directional hearing across a wide frequency range. Many katydid species have cuticular pinnae which form cavities around th

Considerations about the Geographic Distribution of Histoplasma Species.

Histoplasmosis is a mycotic infection principally affecting pulmonary tissue; sometimes, histoplasmosis can progress into a systemic disease. This infection involves immunocompetent and immunosuppressed human and other mammalian hosts, depending on particular circumstances. Histoplasmosis infection has been documented worldwide. The infection is acquired by inhaling infective mycelial propagules of the dimorphic fungus Histoplasma capsulatum. New reports of clinical cases of histoplasmosis in extreme latitudes could be related to human social adaptations and climate changes in the world, which

Rabies as a Potential Cause of Mass Mortality Events in North American Bat Species.

Rabies-association bat mortality events are rarely reported, suggesting that rabies is not a significant cause of bat mass mortality. Three bat die-offs in National Park Service units were attributed to rabies, highlighting the value of including rabies, and rabies virus strain spillover events, as a differential in mass mortality events.

Analysis of the evolution, infectivity and antigenicity of circulating rabies virus strains.

Rabies virus has existed for thousands of years and is circulating in many species. In the present study, a total of 2896 rabies viruses isolated worldwide were phylogenetically classified into ten clusters based on the G gene sequence, and these clusters showed a close relationship with the hosts and regions that they were isolated from. Eighty-three representative G sequences were selected from ten clusters and were used to construct pseudoviruses using the VSV vector. The phylogenetic relationships, infectivity and antigenicity of the representative 83 pseudotyped rabies viruses were compre

Description of Staphylococcal Strains from Straw-Coloured Fruit Bat (Eidolon helvum) and Diamond Firetail (Stagonopleura guttata) and a Review of their Phylogenetic Relationships to Other Staphylococci.

The phylogenetic tree of the Staphylococcus aureus complex consists of several distinct clades and the majority of human and veterinary S. aureus isolates form one large clade. In addition, two divergent clades have recently been described as separate species. One was named Staphylococcus argenteus, due to the lack of the "golden" pigment staphyloxanthin. The second one is S. schweitzeri, found in humans and animals from Central and West Africa. In late 2021, two additional species, S. roterodami and S. singaporensis, have been described from clinical samples from Southeast Asia. In the presen

Deafness in an auditory specialist, the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus).

Bats are long-lived animals that show presumed resistance to noise-induced and age-related hearing loss, which has been attributed to their dependence on sound processing for survival. Echolocation and basic auditory functions have been studied extensively in the big brown bat (Eptesicus fuscus), an insectivorous microchiropteran species. We conducted hearing tests and analysis of cochlear sensory cells in a group of big brown bats that exhibited anomalies in behavioral sonar tracking experiments and/or lacked neural responses to acoustic stimulation in subcortical auditory nuclei. We show for…
