With recent advances in the development of detection methods, the number of STD (Sex transmitted disease) cases detected is greater than ever. Among many STD, Chlamydia trachomatis (= CT), a microbe that has been given a great deal of attention in the urologic field as a cause of nonspecific urethritis and has a characteristic life cycle, has been gradually proved to exist commonly and to become a cause of various obstetrical and gynecological diseases. However, as it is clinically still unknown which symptoms are actually influenced by CT, we studied infection with CT in 706 cases, consists o

Chlamydia psittaci was isolated from cloacal swab pools from ducks in processing plants, and from cloacal and conjunctival swab pools from ducks on farms, in a small proportion of the samples examined. These isolates were difficult to passage. This difficulty was partly overcome by the use of emetine as the cell growth inhibitor. The direct complement fixation (CF) test was modified for testing duck sera by using complement at the los dose of 1.5 units. By this method, positive titres were demonstrated in experimentally prepared duck antisera, and in some of the samples collected from breeding

Specimens for isolation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Chlamydia trachomatis, Candida albicans, and Trichomonas vaginalis were collected from 585 women attending clinics for venereal diseases. The isolation rates in women attending clinics for venereal diseases. The isolation rates in women with and without genitourinary symptoms, the course of untreated chlamydial infection, the occurrence of chlamydial urethritis, and the response to antibiotic treatment were investigated. A 30% incidence of chlamydial amd gonococcal infection was observed. In most cases the gonococcal infection affected both the

For identification of those variables in the history and in the clinical and routine laboratory examination that are most likely to indicate infection of the uterine cervix with Chlamydia trachomatis, 284 women attending a venereal disease clinic were studied, were studied, of whom 58 (20.4%) yielded the organism from the cervix. Women with chlamydial cervical infection showed no distinctive symptoms. Although associations were found between the presence of C. trachomatis and cervical discontinuity, purulent cervical exudate, and inflammatory changes in cervical cytology, these signs were not

Intestinal tract infection by Chlamydia psittaci was demonstrated in one cattle herd by isolation from faecal specimens, using embryonated eggs. Such infections were observed in all animals younger than 12 months, in 60% of the heifers and in none of the adult cows. The presence of infection correlated (r=0.511) with the serum titre of compliment fixation antibodies against chlamydial antigen. Young calves, which were spontaneously infected with Chlamydia postnatally, developed ileitis and moderate interstitial pneumonia. The results of histological sections and isolation of the agent from tis

Background. Previous works suggest that sugars can have a beneficial effect on C. trachomatis (CT) survival and virulence. In this study, we investigated the effect of different sugars on CT infectivity, elucidating some of the molecular mechanisms behind CT-sugar interaction. Methods. CT infectivity was investigated on HeLa cells after 2 hour-incubation of elementary bodies (EBs) with glucose, sucrose, or mannitol solutions (0.5, 2.5, 5.0 mM). The effect of sugars on EB membrane fluidity was investigated by fluorescence anisotropy measurement, whereas the changes in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) e

Chlamydia pneumoniae, an obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen, has long been investigated as a potential developmental or exacerbating factor in various pathologies. Its unique lifestyle and ability to disseminate throughout the host while persisting in relative safety from the immune response has placed this obligate intracellular pathogen in the crosshairs as a potentially mitigating factor in chronic inflammatory diseases. Many animal model and human correlative studies have been performed to confirm or deny a role for C. pneumoniae infection in these disorders. In some cases, antibiot

BACKGROUND: Photosensitivity to Chlamydia trachomatis has been described in almost 50% of chronic cases of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) caused by L1, L2 or L3 serovars. Photosensitivity in non LGV strains of C trachomatis has not been studied. We studied the association of various photosensitive dermatoses with C trachomatis infection in non LGV cases.
METHODS: Sera of all the cases of photosensitivity, melasma, chronic actinic dermatitis (CAD), polymorphic light eruption (PLE), actinic prurigo (AP) and rosacea were tested for the presence of IgM, IgG and IgA antibodies to C trachomatis by

Chlamydia trachomatis may cause trachoma, pneumonia, urogenital infection, conjunctivitis and lymphogranuloma venereum, etc. This paper reviews the effects of monotherapy, combined antibiotic regimens, and drug resistance during the treatment of Chlamydia trachomatis infection.

We describe a case of clinical signs of acute cholecystitis as a complication to genital Chlamydia infection. Transabdominal ultrasound and magnetic resonance-scanning were normal. Cholescintigraphy showed an obstruction of the ductus cysticus. The patient was treated with antibiotics and two weeks later was without symptoms.

Chlamydia pneumoniae infection has been associated with cardiovascular diseases in seroepidemiological studies and by demonstration of the pathogen in atherosclerotic lesions. It has the capacity to infect several cell types, including monocyte-derived macrophages, which play an essential role in the development of atherosclerosis. However, the persistence of C. pneumoniae in mononuclear cells is poorly understood. To study the morphology and biological characteristics of the infection, human peripheral blood monocytes were infected with C. pneumoniae. Freshly isolated monocytes resisted the d

Chlamydia trachomatis is one of the most prevalent genital pathogens in pregnant women. Ascending, transcervical infection may reach fetal membranes creating chorioamnionitis or amniotic fluid infection. The aim of this study was to examine amniotic fluids obtained during cesarean section for the presence of chlamydial IgM- and IgG-specific antibodies, and for the presence of C. trachomatis antigen. Five of 52 (9.6%) amniotic fluid samples were seropositive. Two of 52 (3.8%) amniotic fluid samples had C. trachomatis antigen in the epithelial cells of the amnion. In conclusion, our data indicat

Conjunctival swabs collected in 1991-92 from 333 pedigree and non-pedigree cats were tested for the presence of Chlamydia spp. antigen using an ELISA antigen kit. Forty (18.4%) of the 217 samples from cats with conjunctivitis were positive. Seven (6%) of 116 samples from cats which were in contact with cats with conjunctivitis but which showed no clinical signs at the time of sample collection were positive. Positive-testing cats were frequently from multi-cat households. Chlamydia spp. is present and associated with conjunctivitis in cats in New Zealand. Infection may occur concurrently with

Chlamydia Trachomatis (C.T.) most commonly causes cervicitis in women, often without overt symptoms; when untreated, it produces a clinically inapparent but persistent mild infection or an evident salpingitis. Either processes may lead to scarring of the falloppian tubes and fertility problems. A group of 30 women 20-35 years aged has undergone an ophthalmological routine examination; 7 of them presented a chronical follicular conjunctivitis and history of yellow-white cervical discharge, while the remaining 23 had a mild chronical follicular conjunctivitis but not genital symptoms. Each patie
