Assessing interannual variation in leaf chlorophyll dynamics using optical and destructive methods with mixed-effects and additive modelling.

Accurate assessment of leaf chlorophyll is essential for understanding plant physiological responses to environmental variation. While solvent extraction provides precise chlorophyll measurements, it is destructive and temporally limited, whereas portable optical meters such as the CCM-300 enable rapid, non-destructive measurement of the chlorophyll fluorescence ratio (CFR) but require species- and season-specific calibration. This study evaluates the performance of CCM-300 measurements and reconstructs seasonal chlorophyll dynamics in field maple (Acer campestre) across two contrasting summer

YGL46 encoding ferredoxin-like protein interacts with FTR and CAO to regulate chlorophyll synthesis and leaf development in maize.

Chlorophyll is crucial in photosynthesis, enabling plants to absorb light energy for photosynthesis. Here, we identified a yellow-green leaf mutant ygl46 derived from natural variation. Phenotypic characterization exhibited pale leaves. In the mutant, chlorophyll accumulation was significantly reduced, especially chlorophyll b. The mutated phenotype is governed by a single recessive gene. The mutation site was mapped to a 270-kb physical interval between the Indel markers ID0270 and ID0302 on chromosome 5 using an F2 mapping population. A gene (Zm00001d013534) encoding ferredoxin-like (FdC2) p…

Comparison of the antimicrobial reduction effect of photodynamic inactivation with the addition of chlorophyll and curcumin photosensitizer in Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Enterococcus faecalis.

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic resistance in oral pathogens such as Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans and Enterococcus faecalis necessitates alternative antimicrobial strategies. Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a promising approach that utilizes a photosensitizer (PS), light, and oxygen to generate cytotoxic reactive oxygen species. This study evaluated the efficacy of two natural photosensitizers, curcumin and chlorophyll (from Medicago sativa L.), for the photodynamic inactivation of these bacteria. METHODS: Planktonic cultures of A. actinomycetemcomitans and E. faecalis were subjected to PD

The Q-Band Energetics and Relaxation of Chlorophylls a and b as Revealed by Visible-to-Near Infrared Time-Resolved Absorption Spectroscopy.

Chlorophyll (Chl) is the most abundant light-harvesting pigment of oxygenic photosynthetic organisms; however, the Q-band energetics and relaxation dynamics remain unclear. In this work, we have applied femtosecond time-resolved (fs-TA) absorption spectroscopy in 430-1,700 nm to Chls a and b in diluted pyridine solutions under selective optical excitation within their Q-bands. The results revealed distinct near-infrared absorption features of the Bx,y ← Qy and Bx,y ← Qx transitions in 930-1,700 nm, which together with the steady-state absorption in 400-700 nm unveiled the Qx(0,0)-state energy

Comparison of effect of CdS QD and ZnS QD and their corresponding salts on growth, chlorophyll content and antioxidative capacity of tomato.

When applied in the same concentration to tomato plants, cadmium sulfate (CdSO4) and zinc sulfate (ZnSO4) were transported from soil to roots and from roots to shoots more readily than their nano counterparts: cadmium sulfide quantum dots (CdS QD) and zinc sulfide quantum dots (ZnS QD). Compared to the CdS QD, he higher rate of transport of CdSO4 resulted in a greater negative effect on growth, chlorophyll content, antioxidant properties, lipid peroxidation and activation of antioxidant defence systems. Although ZnSO4 was transported more rapidly than ZnS QD, the overall effect of Zn addition

One ring is not enough to rule them all. Albumin-dependent ABCG2-mediated transport of chlorophyll-derived photosensitizers.

Breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP, ABCG2) is a member of the ATP-binding-cassette (ABC) superfamily of membrane transporters. It is involved in the efflux of a broad range of xenobiotics of highly diverse structures. BCRP activity greatly influences drug distribution in vivo and is often associated with cancer multidrug resistance, which is observed in the case of both chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy. The set of ABCG2 substrates includes porphyrins and chlorins such as heme, hemin, protoporphyrin IX, chlorin e6, pheophorbide a, and their derivatives. Here we provide an evidence that

Effects of molecular structures on reduction properties of formyl groups in chlorophylls and pheophytins prepared from oxygenic photosynthetic organisms.

Reduction of the 7-formyl groups in chlorophyll (Chl) b and its demetalated compound pheophytin (Phe) b was kinetically analyzed by using tert-butylamine-borane complex (t-BuNH(2)·BH(3)), and was compared with that of the 3-formyl groups in Chl d and Phe d. Reduction kinetics of the 7-formyl group in Chl b was similar to that in Phe b in dichloromethane containing 5mM t-BuNH(2)·BH(3). Little difference of the reduction kinetics of the 7-formyl groups between Chl b and Phe b was in sharp contrast to the reduction kinetics of the 3-formyl groups in Chl d and Phe d: the 3-formyl group in Phe d wa

Carotenoid triplet states associated with the long-wavelength-emitting chlorophyll forms of photosystem I in isolated thylakoid membranes.

The carotenoid triplet populations associated with the long-wavelength-emitting chlorophyll forms of photosystem I (PS I)(dagger) have been investigated in isolated spinach thylakoids by means of fluorescence-detected magnetic resonance in zero field. The spectra collected in the 730-800 nm emission range can be globally fitted assuming the presence of four different carotenoid triplet states coupled to long-wavelength-emitting forms of PS I, having zero-field-splitting parameters /D/ = 0.0359 cm(-1) and /E/ = 0.00371 cm(-1), /D/ = 0.0382 cm(-1) and /E/ = 0.00388 cm(-1), /D/ = 0.0395 cm(-1) an

Flag leaf chlorophyll content of wheat: genetic dissection, candidate genes prediction and its relationship with other agronomic traits.

Chlorophyll is the primary pigment responsible for capturing light energy and driving photosynthetic conversion. As the key photosynthetic organ during grain filling, the flag leaf plays a critical role in carbon assimilation, consequently, its chlorophyll content (FLC) represents a promising target for enhancing wheat yield and ensuring food security. Dissecting the genetic basis underlying FLC and elucidating its relationships with other agronomic traits are essential for accelerating molecular breeding aiming at improving photosynthetic efficiency and yield in wheat varieties. In this study

Leveraging TROPOMI red solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence for enhanced detection of harmful algal blooms in turbid coastal waters.

Frequent harmful algal blooms (HABs) pose significant risks to marine ecosystems. Traditional remote sensing indicators for HABs monitoring, based on wide-band reflectance, are susceptible to interference from non-algal materials, such as suspended sediment in turbid coastal waters. In contrast, ocean solar-induced chlorophyll fluorescence (SIF), retrieved from narrow solar Fraunhofer lines, provides a more direct measurements of the optical signal emitted by phytoplankton during photosynthesis, offering new perspectives for HABs detection. We used red SIF from the TROPOMI to detect HABs in th

Methyl Jasmonate Was Involved in Hydrogen Sulfide-Alleviated Cadmium Stress in Cucumber Plants Through ROS Homeostasis and Chlorophyll Metabolism.

Cadmium (Cd), as one of the most toxic nonessential elements, severely prohibits plant growth and development. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) play essential roles in plant response to abiotic stress. However, the potential mechanism of H2S and MeJA in alleviating Cd stress in plants remains unclear. In the current study, the importance and crosstalk of H2S and MeJA in the Cd tolerance of cucumber seedlings have been investigated. Our results revealed that Cd stress obviously prohibited the growth of cucumber seedlings. Optimal concentrations of H2S donor sodium hydrosulfide

Relationships between chlorophyll content of vine leaves, predawn leaf water potential at veraison, and chemical and sensory attributes of wine.

BACKGROUND: Water deficit and iron deficiency (iron chlorosis) are common environmental stresses that affect grapevine production in the Mediterranean area. Studies on the impact of both stresses, when they act simultaneously, are rare. The main objective of this investigation was to evaluate the combined effects of the incidence of iron chlorosis and the vine water status on quality of Tempranillo wine. For this, 20 non-irrigated vineyard subzones (10 m × 10 m each), from non-affected to moderately affected by iron chlorosis, were monitored in the Ribera del Duero area (north-central Spain) d

Synthesis, structure, and optical and redox properties of chlorophyll derivatives directly coordinating ruthenium bisbipyridine at the peripheral β-diketonate moiety.

The diketonate group of the peripheral position in chlorophyll derivatives 1 and 2 coordinated ruthenium bisbipyridine to give direct linkages 3-5 of the chlorin ring with the Ru(II) complex. Zinc metalation of the central position in the chlorin ring of free base 3 afforded the Ru-Zn binuclear complex 3-Zn. Because the diketonate group at the C3 position of chlorophyll derivatives coordinated to bulky Ru(bpy)2(2+), the plane of the diketonate group was twisted from the chlorin π ring in synthetic 3-5 and 3-Zn to lead to a partial deconjugation and a slight blue shift of the longest wavelength

Relaxation of variable chlorophyll fluorescence after illumination of dark-adapted barley leaves as influenced by the redox states of electron carriers.

Kinetics of the dark relaxation of variable chlorophyll fluorescence, Fv, were studied after brief illumination of dark-adapted barley leaves in order to understand the rapid reversibility of pulse-induced fluorescence increases, which is observed even when fast linear electron transport to an external electron acceptor is not possible. Four kinetically distinct components were observed which reveal complexity in the oxidation of the reduced primary quinone acceptor of Photosystem II, Q (A) (-) : the slowest component accounted for 4-5% of maximal Fv and had a life-time of several seconds. Response of a Benthic Sargassum Population to Increased Temperatures: Decline in Non-Photochemical Quenching of Chlorophyll a Fluorescence (NPQ) Precedes That of Maximum Quantum Yield of PSII.

Sargassum is an important primary producer of rocky bottom communities in coastal ecosystems. Like other parts of the planet, benthic populations of S. natans from Ilha Grande Bay (IGB), southeastern Brazil, have been suffering from different forms of natural and anthropogenic disturbances, in particular increasing seawater temperatures. The aim of this study was to understand the effects of temperature on the photosynthetic performance of S. natans using the pulse amplitude modulated (PAM) fluorometry. In the field experiments, the occurrence of photoprotection resulted in a difference betwee
