Gall-bladder visualization on oral cholecystography (OCG) is required for most non-surgical therapies of gallstones. In this study we attempted to establish sonographic criteria which will predict non-visualization of the gall-bladder on OCG. The prevalence of gallstones and gallbladder disease was studied in a rural Caucasian population. The frequency of gallstone disease was studied in a group of 82 subjects (69 females and 13 males; mean ages 55-0 and 52-3 years, respectively) with verified hypercalcaemia (VHC) detected in a health screening in the Stockholm area. The fundus of a normal gallbladder is rounded. Any deviation from this configuration should prompt a search for the nonfilled segment of a septate gallbladder. Three illustrative cases are presented in which the initial observation of a flat fundus led to further evaluation and visualization of the remaining portion of a septate gallbladder.
