Pressure to decrease freshwater consumption at pulp mills is causing an increase in deposit problems, as higher probability of scaling and precipitation is contributed to the increasing concentrations of these compounds in the process streams. The goal of this study was to characterize the composition of a dryer tank deposit from a Nordic hardwood kraft mill and identify the reasons behind its formation. A single solvent ethyl acetate extraction system was proposed instead of the established three solvent sequestional extraction sequence with dichloromethane, acetone, and water, respectively.

A procedure for the qualitative assessment of inhibitory activity towards acetylcholinesterase for a given compound is described. Solutions of the compounds of interest are spotted on silica gel TLC plates in a matrix pattern. The silica gel plate is sprayed with a solution of acetylthiocholine iodide and 5,5-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid) followed by a solution of acetylcholinesterase. Isolated rat livers were perfused with 0.9 to 18 mumol of 14C-neostigmine (NEO) or 14C-(3-hydroxyphenyl)trimethylammonium (HPTMA). Within 30 min. 30-90% of the administered doses were sequestered by the liver. The initial extraction rate was equivalent to about 15% of the perfusion rate. Studies were carried out to determine the chemical structures of thyroxine metabolites after total deiodination. Normal subjects were given thyroxine labeled with (14)C on the nonphenolic ring and the alanine side chain, 8-11 mug/day for 10 days. By paper chromatography of fresh urine, six or more (14)C-labeled compounds were separated. The (14)C-labeled metabolites were concentrated by passing the urine through a nonionic polymeric adsorbent. Two major thyroxine metabolites were identified. Bacillus megaterium ATCC 19213 secretes a cell division-initiating "schizokinen" (SK) which accumulates during its culture cycle to a concentration inversely proportional to the iron added to a sucrose-mineral salts medium.
