Behavior of chromium and arsenic on activated carbon.

The simultaneous adsorption of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) and trivalent arsenic (As(III)) in single component and binary systems has been studied by activated carbon (AC). The capacity of Cr(VI) in the single experiment is greater than that of As(III) onto AC. The effects of various parameters like initial concentration, pH and temperature have been considered in the experiment. Cr(VI) removal is pH dependent and found to be maximum at pH 2.0. While, As(III) is found to be maximum at pH 7.0 in the single adsorption experiment. In the binary adsorption of As(III), the uptake of As(III) is gen…

Toxicity and carcinogenicity of chromium compounds in humans.

Chromium is a human carcinogen primarily by inhalation exposure in occupational settings. Although lung cancer has been established as a consequence of hexavalent chromium exposure in smokers and nonsmokers, some cancers of other tissues of the gastrointestinal and central nervous systems have also been noted. Except for a few reports from China, little is known about the health risks of environmental exposures to chromium. Likewise, there has been a lack of epidemiological studies of human exposure to hexavalent Cr by drinking water or ingestion, and it has been suggested that humans can perh…

Sialoglycoprotein and carbohydrate complexes in chromium toxicity.

Chromium(VI) compounds are amongst the most widely encountered industrial carcinogens and are of increasing concern with respect to environmental exposure. Sialoglycoproteins and carbohydrates play a crucial role in stabilizing oxoCr(V) intermediates, which are produced by extracellular and intracellular reduction of chromium(VI). Recent research has addressed the molecular characterization of oxoCr(V)-sialoglycoprotein and -carbohydrate complexes and the roles that these species may play in Cr(VI) metabolism and carcinogenesis. Particular highlights include the role of oxoCr(V) complexes of e…

Investigation of the threshold for allergic reactivity to chromium.

Allergy to chromium is relatively common, often in association with exposure to cement or in leather manufacture. However, in certain locations, there appears to be a relatively large cohort of chromium-sensitive individuals whose allergy cannot be explained by these common sources. In particular, this group include Israeli housewives with persistent hand eczema and concomitant patch test positivity to chromium. The causation of their allergy has been linked with relatively high levels of chromium contamination in household products. To provide further information in respect of the definition …

DNA cleavage by a Chromium(III) complex.

A new Cr(III) complex with the empirical formula [Cr(Schiff base) (H(2)O)(2)]ClO(4), where the Schiff base is 2, 3-bis¿[(2-hydroxy-4-diethylamino) (phenyl) (methylene)]amino¿2-butenedinitrile has been synthesized and characterized spectroscopically. Binding of this complex to DNA has been studied using UV-visible spectroscopy. The complex has been found to bind to the major groove of DNA with a binding constant, K = (1.3 +/- 0.2) x 10(3) M(-1). The induced CD spectrum of the complex in the presence of DNA is also indicative of major groove binding. Gel electrophoresis of plasmid DNA in the pre

A study of chromium, nickel and cobalt hypersensitivity.

Hypersensitivity reactions to chromium, nickel and cobalt were investigated in the preclinical, fourth year and fifth year students of the Dentistry Faculty of Marmara University, Türkiye. A Standard patch test was performed. Four patches were applied to the shoulder blades of the students. Three of them contained small amounts of 0.5% potassium chromate, 5% nickel sulphate and 1% cobalt chloride respectively. The fourth (control) patch was of petroleum jelly. Questionnaires were used to determine sex and history of any previous allergy to jewelry. After 48 hours, the patches were removed and …

Toxic effects of chromium and its compounds.

Chromium was discovered in 1797 by Vauquelin. Numerous industrial applications raised chromium to a very important economic element. At the same time, with the development of its uses, the adverse effects of chromium compounds in human health were being defined. Trivalent chromium is an essential trace element in humans and in animals. Chromium as pure metal has no adverse effect. Little toxic effect is attributed to trivalent chromium when present in very large quantities. Both acute and chronic toxicity of chromium are mainly caused by hexavalent compounds. The most important toxic effects, …

Chromium and cholesterol-induced atherosclerosis in rabbits.

Thirty-three rabbits on a cholesterol-enriched diet were randomized into 6 groups and treated with daily injections of either water, 20 micrograms of potassium chromate or 1, 5, 10 or 20 micrograms of chromium chloride, respectively, for 135 days with a 2- to 10-fold increase in serum chromium. There was a marked reduction in the percentage of aortic intimal surface covered by plaque, in aortic weight and cholesterol content in the treated animals. Rabbits treated with 20 micrograms of chromium chloride showed a better response than those treated with either 10 or 20 micrograms of potassium ch…

[Vitamin status of workers in the chromium industry].

The content of A, E, C, B2 and PP vitamins and their metabolites in the blood and urine as well as microsigns of vitamin deficiency were studied in workers engaged in chrome industry. Microsigns of vitamin deficiency were observed along with low levels of vitamins. This appears to be associated with increased physiological requirements in vitamins due to specific work of chrome industry personnel.

[Determining sexivalent chromium compounds in the air].

Within the studies, three methodological versions of the determination of VI chromium with diphenylcarbazide have been evaluated. The versions differed primarily by the technique of elution (acid, alkaline) of the chromium sample from the filter. As optimum conditions for determining Cr VI in the presence of Cr III and Fe III, the parameters adopted by Carelli have been determined, some modifications being made consisting in improving and simplifying the analytical procedures, as well as making them more precise, and in the use of available materials.

Chromium: a review of environmental and occupational toxicology.

The following topics are covered in this brief review on the environmental and occupational toxicology of chromium: occurrence, production and uses of chromium and chromium compounds; experimental toxicology; chromium toxicity for man; hygienic and ecologic aspects of chromium contamination of the environment. The review provides a conclusive evidence which suggests that chromium, especially its hexavalent form, is both toxic and carcinogenic, but its trivalent form is physiologically essential in the metabolism of insulin. It is also emphasized that among the major sources of environmental ch…

Clinical and biochemical aspects of chromium deficiency.

The essentiality of chromium (Cr) in animal and human nutrition is now well accepted. In animals, Cr deficiency can cause a diabetic-like state, impaired growth, elevated blood lipids, increased aortic plaque formation, and decreased fertility and longevity. The ability of Cr to potentiate insulin sensitivity has considerable experimental support. In the human, Cr deficiency has been demonstrated unequivocally in only one clinical situation, patients on total parenteral nutrition without added Cr. In such patients, impaired glucose tolerance, hyperglycemia, relative insulin resistance, periphe…

The role of carrier in sensitivity to chromium and cobalt.

Patients suffering from contact dermatitis caused by chromium sensitivity showed positive reactions to intradermal tests with chromium and cobalt chlorides. Patch tests to cobalt in unaffected and in healed eczematous skin areas gave negative results. A large number of chromium-sensitive patients also showed a positive intradermal test reaction to cobalt bound to human serum albumin and a negative reaction to cobalt bound to rabbit liver glycogen. It has been suggested that these positive reactions to cobalt are secondary sensitivities to cobalt, caused by cobalt-denaturated human serum albumi…

Progress in phytoremediation of chromium from the environment.

As chromium (Cr) in ecosystems affects human health through food chain exposure, phytoremediation is an environmentally friendly and efficient way to reduce chromium pollution in the environment. Here, we review the mechanism of absorption, translocation, storage, detoxification, and regulation of Cr in plants. The Cr(VI) form is more soluble, mobile, and toxic than Cr(III), reflecting how various valence states of Cr affect environmental risk characteristics, physicochemical properties, toxicity, and plant uptake. Plant root's response to Cr exposure leads to reactive oxygen species (ROS) gen…
