BACKGROUND: Civil commitment (CC) for substance use disorders (SUDs) is a legal mechanism, initiated by family members, healthcare professionals, or others, that compels individuals with substance use problems into involuntary treatment. With the recent rise of US overdose deaths, more states are considering these laws. Yet little is known about physicians' perspectives regarding CC in treating patients with SUDs.

Vaccination has transformed public health, most notably including the eradication of smallpox. Despite its profound historical importance, little is known of the origins and diversity of the viruses used in smallpox vaccination. Prior to the twentieth century, the method, source and origin of smallpox vaccinations remained unstandardised and opaque. We reconstruct and analyse viral vaccine genomes associated with smallpox vaccination from historical artefacts. John Brian Christopherson (1868-1955) was one of the first doctors to be recruited to serve in the Sudan under the British colonial rule. During his work in Sudan (1902-1919) he was key in establishing the civilian medical services in Sudan, including establishing Khartoum Civil Hospital (opened in 1909). BACKGROUND: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a vector-mediated skin disease, characterized by chronic wounds on the skin and caused by macrophages in protozoan parasites. It is an endemic disease in the southern and southeastern Anatolia region and is still an important public health problem in Turkey. Because of the civil war in Syria, immigrants to this region in the last 3 years have begun to more frequently present with this disease. The aim of this study was to draw attention to the dramatic increase in new cases with CL after the beginning of the civil war in Syria.

BACKGROUND: Reports on genitourinary (GU) trauma during the Iraqi conflict have been limited to battlefield injuries. We sought to characterise the incidence, mechanism of injury, wounding pattern, and management of lower GU injuries sustained in civil violence during the Iraqi war.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 2800 casualties with penetrating trauma to the abdomen and pelvis were treated at the Yarmouk Hospital, Baghdad from January 2004 to June 2008. Of the casualties 504 (18%) had GU trauma including 217 (43%) with one or more injuries to the lower GU organs.

It has been more than a decade since the modified Bolam test was legislatively enacted.by the Australian States following the medical indemnity crisis. Since its implementation, the modified Bolam test has been configured by judges as a defence to the common law standard of care in medical diagnosis and treatment. Structural transformation of a civil hospital into a military one during "August War 2008" (August 8-12) in Georgia is presented. Damage-control principles, such as hemorrhage control, liver-packing and abdominal tamponade, gastrointestinal tract resection without formation of anastomoses, and other temporary interventions were prioritized. To assess the burden of infectious and parasitic diseases on hospital services at District Civil Hospital (DCH) Belgaum, a retrospective study was carried out using discharge records concerning 8506 inpatients due to infectious and parasitic diseases among 95,655 patients admitted for all causes during the reference period 2000-2003.
