Stormier Southern Hemisphere induced by topography and ocean circulation.

A defining feature of Earth's present-day climate is that the Southern Hemisphere is stormier than the Northern Hemisphere. Consistently, the Southern Hemisphere has a stronger jet stream and more extreme weather events than the Northern Hemisphere. Understanding the relative importance of land-ocean contrast, including topography, radiative processes, and ocean circulation for determining this storminess asymmetry is important and may be helpful for interpreting projections of future storminess. Here, we show that the stormier Southern Hemisphere is induced by nearly equal contributions from

Climate-driven local amplifications of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon in the Arctic Ocean amid basin-scale stability.

The Arctic is undergoing accelerated warming and widespread permafrost thaw, processes expected to enhance the export of terrestrial dissolved organic carbon (DOC) to the ocean. Yet whether climate change has altered the magnitude, distribution, and transport pathways of terrestrial DOC across the Arctic Ocean remains poorly constrained by basin-scale observations. Here we combine optical proxies with satellite remote sensing to track the spatiotemporal dynamics of terrestrial DOC across the Arctic since the early 21st century. We find that terrestrial DOC is not confined to river plumes or ad

Lyme Disease Risks in Europe under Multiple Uncertain Drivers of Change.

BACKGROUND: Debates over whether climate change could lead to the amplification of Lyme disease (LD) risk in the future have received much attention. Although recent large-scale disease mapping studies project an overall increase in Lyme disease risk as the climate warms, such conclusions are based on climate-driven models in which other drivers of change, such as land-use/cover and host population distribution, are less considered. OBJECTIVES: The main objectives were to project the likely future ecological risk patterns of LD in Europe under different assumptions about future socioeconomic

Anticipatory decision-making for cholera in Malawi.

Climate change raises an old disease to a new level of public health threat. The causative agent, Vibrio cholerae, native to aquatic ecosystems, is influenced by climate and weather processes. The risk of cholera is elevated in vulnerable populations lacking access to safe water and sanitation infrastructure. Predictive intelligence, employing mathematical algorithms that integrate earth observations and heuristics derived from microbiological, sociological, and weather data, can provide anticipatory decision-making capabilities to reduce the burden of cholera and save human lives. An example

Multi-scale analysis of nutrient and environmental dynamics in Hongfeng Lake Southwest China.

Traditional linear correlation analysis may not fully capture the true relationship between these variables. Therefore, multi-scale running correlation analysis, such as time-dependent intrinsic correlation (TDIC) and continuous wavelet transform based on Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT), provides valuable insights into local correlations and the evolving relationship between nutrients and environmental factors over time. In this study, we investigated seven environmental factors and four water quality nutrient indicators in deep lakes on the Yungui Plateau in southwestern China. The results reve

Extreme heat and human fertility: Amplified challenges in the era of climate change.

Rising global temperatures and extreme heat events, exacerbated by climate change, pose critical public health challenges, with understudied consequences for human fertility and reproductive health (FRH). While heat-related morbidity and mortality have gained substantial attention, the direct and indirect impacts of thermal stress on FRH-particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs)-remain poorly understood. In LMICs, socioeconomic disparities, environmental vulnerabilities, and cultural norms favoring larger families amplify risks and disproportionately burden marginalized populati

Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven approach to climate action and sustainable development.

Countries have pledged commitment to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement to combat climate change. To maximize synergies between SDGs and climate actions (CAs), we evaluate the alignment of national commitment to SDGs and emissions reduction targets by comparing action plans embodied in Voluntary National Review (VNR) reports and the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) across 67 countries. An Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based approach is proposed in this study to explore the interconnectedness by applying machine learning classifier and natural language

Bridging the Gap Between Climate and Health Systems: The Value of Resilience in Facing Extreme Weather Events.

With the rise in climate emergencies come complex challenges for the field of health systems that require equally complex strategies. Acknowledgement of the pressures experienced by health systems in relation to CC is increasing, but it remains understudied. This article aims to strengthen the link between climate and health systems by examining how health systems can incorporate resilience strategies to better respond to extreme weather events. Framed by an explorative literature search, the policy analysis dives into the content of the Health National Adaptation plans of both Fiji and Tanzan

Origin, evolution, and fate of Titan's polar clouds.

Saturn's moon Titan exhibits a rich interplay of atmospheric chemistry and meteorology, including the seasonal formation of polar stratospheric clouds, first observed by Voyager and later by the Cassini mission. Using a global climate model with haze and cloud microphysics, we investigate their origin, evolution, and fate. We find that cloud formation begins in early autumn, triggered by rapid radiative cooling and chemical enrichment within the stratospheric polar vortex. Initially extending to 336 km altitude and composed of benzene and hydrogen cyanide ices, these clouds descend to lower al

Exploring the Relationship Between Foodborne Outbreaks and Climate Change Using Social Media Data in the Years 2016-2021.

Evidence suggests that weather affects the incidence of enteric infections, but most foodborne-illness research focuses on short-lived extreme events (e.g., heatwaves and floods) rather than gradual climate variability. A second, related limitation is surveillance under-ascertainment: many mild-to-moderate cases are rarely reported, which constrains our ability to quantify climate-sensitive changes in disease burden. This study addresses these gaps by testing whether symptom-related social media messages can serve as a complementary signal for foodborne illness and, when combined with climate

The Conditional Protective Role of Psychological Resilience: School Bullying Climate, Emotional Regulation Difficulties, and Mobile Phone Dependence Among Left-Behind Children.

School bullying climate is a known risk factor for adolescent mobile phone dependence, yet the mechanisms linking these two constructs and the boundary conditions of protective factors remain underexplored. The present study aimed to examine the mediating role of emotional regulation difficulties in the relationship between school bullying climate and mobile phone dependence among left-behind children, as well as the moderating role of psychological resilience in this mediating pathway. The final analytical sample consisted of 300 left-behind children who completed two waves of surveys separat

Characterizing volatile organic compounds from personal protective equipment users: Implications to cleanroom air quality and occupational health.

Human-related contaminants are the primary pollution source in cleanrooms. This study employed time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS) to characterize volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions from breath and skin under different activity levels and personal protective equipment (PPE) conditions in a climatic chamber. The results show that, without PPE, breath and skin emission rates were 968.2 ± 350.8 μg h-1p-1 and 2115.8 ± 1813.7 μg h-1p-1, respectively. With PPE, breath emissions slightly increased to 1068.6 ± 472.7 μg h-1p-1, while skin emissions stabilized at 2181.1 ± 1302.5 μg h-1p

Prioritisation of older adults in global climate change adaptation plans: a comparative policy document analysis of 204 countries.

Older adults (ie, ≥65 years old) have disproportionate health impacts from climate change owing to age-associated physiological changes and higher prevalences of chronic diseases, functional impairment, and social isolation. Prioritising older adults in climate change adaptation plans is essential to ensure their needs are supported in future policy decisions. We identified 16 adaptation themes relevant to the health and wellbeing of older adults using a framework-based synthesis and examined their inclusion across national climate change adaptation plans from 204 countries. 125 countries (61·

Climate change impacts on West Nile virus transmission in a global context.

West Nile virus (WNV), the most widely distributed virus of the encephalitic flaviviruses, is a vector-borne pathogen of global importance. The transmission cycle exists in rural and urban areas where the virus infects birds, humans, horses and other mammals. Multiple factors impact the transmission and distribution of WNV, related to the dynamics and interactions between pathogen, vector, vertebrate hosts and environment. Hence, among other drivers, weather conditions have direct and indirect influences on vector competence (the ability to acquire, maintain and transmit the virus), on the vec

Regional and seasonal response of a West Nile virus vector to climate change.

Climate change will affect the abundance and seasonality of West Nile virus (WNV) vectors, altering the risk of virus transmission to humans. Using downscaled general circulation model output, we calculate a WNV vector's response to climate change across the southern United States using process-based modeling. In the eastern United States, Culex quinquefasciatus response to projected climate change displays a latitudinal and elevational gradient. Projected summer population depressions as a result of increased immature mortality and habitat drying are most severe in the south and almost absent

Comparative study on lake ice phenology changes and driving factors in large lakes of mid-latitude Xinjiang, China.

The changes in lake ice phenology (LIP) can intuitively reflect the climate evolution in the regions where lakes are located, serving as an important indicator of climate change. The Tianshan Mountains, situated at the southern edge of freezing lakes in the Northern Hemisphere, are a crucial water resource base in Xinjiang and support significant ecosystems closely related to human activities. In the context of intensified climate change, this study focuses on the geographical location, altitude, and water quality differences among large lake groups in the mid-latitude region of Xinjiang, aimi

Biogeochemical controls on climatically active gases and atmospheric sulfate aerosols in the western Pacific.

The Pacific Ocean plays an important role in regulating the budget of climatically active gases and the burden of sulfate aerosols. Here, a field investigation was conducted to clarify the key processes and factors controlling climatically active gases, including dimethyl sulfide (DMS), carbonyl sulfide (OCS), carbon disulfide (CS2), and carbon dioxide (CO2), in both surface seawater and the lower atmosphere of the western Pacific. In addition, the relative contributions of different sources to atmospheric sulfate aerosols were quantitatively estimated, and their causes were explored. The maxi

The impact of climate change on maternal and child health outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa: A five-year (2020-2024) scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: In sub-Saharan Africa, climate change presents considerable threats to the health and well-being of women of reproductive age and children under 5 years. Some documented impacts include pregnancy complications, irregular breastfeeding, malnutrition, stunting, wasting, and diminished access to healthcare. While significant scholarly efforts have explored these outcomes, regional understanding of impacts remains vague. METHODS: A systematic search of peer-reviewed and grey literature was conducted across four databases and search engines: Web of Science, PubMed, Google Scholar, an
