BACKGROUND: A Supracondylar fracture of the humerus is the most common fracture in children around the elbow and is also called first decade injury. If not treated properly it may lead to disability due to elbow stiffness, and sequel of neuro-vascular injuries like Volkmann ischemic contracture etc. This study was undertaken to determine the outcome of close reduction and immobilization of the elbow in extension and supination in displaced supracondylar fractures of the humerus in children.
METHOD: This Quasi-experimental study was conducted in the Department of Orthopaedics, Postgraduate Med

Between January 1987 and December 1989, a retrospective study was done of 42 patients with 56 closed intra-articular calcaneal fractures treated with no reduction and early mobilisation at the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Toa Payoh Hospital. There were 12 left, 16 right and 14 bilateral fractures. Using the Creighton-Nebraska Health Assessment for calcaneal fractures, 38 (67.9%) fractures were rated as excellent and good and the average follow-up period was 3.2 years. Thirty-five (83.3%) of the patients were able to work after an average interval of 4.5 months. The complications included

From 1985 to 1991, 623 cases of supracondylar fracture of the humerus in children were admitted to one center, of which 403 were analyzed in detail. Of these, 180 cases were classified as Gartland type III extension fractures, and 111 were treated via primary closed reduction and percutaneous smooth Kirschner wire pinning, of which 82 were followed up for an average of 3.5 years and were studied in detail clinically and radiologically. There were two cases of superficial pin tract infection and one of ulnar nerve palsy associated with the pinning. Nineteen fractures (10.5%) had an initial nerv

Seventeen displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures treated operatively were matched with 17 nonoperatively treated displaced intraarticular calcaneal fractures among Workers' Compensation Board patients. Matching criteria included type of fracture, age, year of injury, and occupation. After follow-up averaging 6.3 years and 5.4 years, respectively, no significant differences existed between the two groups in heel pain, subtalar motion, and return to work. However, in those fractures treated operatively, the overall clinical result was better when an anatomic reduction of the subtalar joint

Extra-octave fractures of the fifth proximal phalanx are Salter-Harris type II physeal injuries resulting in ulnar deviation and dorsal angulation. If inadequately reduced, these fractures may result in cosmetic deformity, malalignment, and functional impairment. Traditional reduction methods, such as the Jahss maneuver, can be technically demanding, forceful, and often require sedation or surgical assistance, which limits their use in younger children and in resource-constrained environments. We report our experience with the fulcrum-assisted "pencil technique" for closed reduction in four ch

OBJECTIVE: In the past, obviously displaced lateral condyle fractures of the humerus in children were treated satisfactorily with open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). However, in recent years, more studies have mentioned closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP) of these fractures.
METHODS: In this retrospective investigation, the radiographic and clinical results of patients with these fractures that were initially managed with CRPP were newly classified. We classified these fractures into three groups according to the degree and pattern of fracture displacement as identified

Although closed reduction is common for condylar fractures, bone fragments may heal improperly. This study aimed to investigate the healing morphology of unilateral condylar fractures. We retrospectively investigated 70 patients with unilateral condylar fractures. Clinico-statistical analyses were performed on the whole-condylar fracture, closed reduction, and observation/functional therapy groups. Among these patients, 52 patients aged older than 16 years underwent closed reduction. The extent of maximum mouth opening, the incidence of malocclusion, and the relationship between healing morpho

The moment arm of gluteus medius proportionated to distance from femoral head tends to be decreased postoperatively in valgus-impacted femoral neck fractures treated by in situ internal fixation. The aim of this article is to introduce a new gentle technique to correct the deformity. The innovative technique of Minimally Invasive Closed Reduction for Impacted Femoral neck fractures (MICRIF) mainly focused to disimpact valgus neck fractures into anatomical position. Patients were positioned on the fracture table to fix the hip joint in abduction and internal rotation. A 2.4-mm diameter Kirschne

BACKGROUND: Initial treatment for a displaced ankle fracture is closed reduction and splinting. This is typically performed in conjunction with either an intra-articular hematoma block (IAHB) or procedural sedation (PS) to assist with pain control. The purpose of this study was to compare the safety of IAHB to PS and evaluate the efficiency and efficacy for each method.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review for ankle fractures requiring manipulation was performed for patients seen in a level I trauma center from 2005 to 2016. The primary outcome was rate of successful reduction. Several secon

PURPOSE: The therapy of distal radial fractures in children is expected to be as non-invasive as possible but also needs to deliver the definite care for gaining optimal reduction and stabilizing the fracture. Therefore, closed reduction and immobilization is competing with routine Kirschner wire fixation. The aim of our study was to investigate if closed reduction and immobilization without osteosynthesis can ensure stabilization of the fracture.
METHODS: We chose a retrospective study design and analyzed 393 displaced distal radial fractures in children from 1 to 18 years with open epiphyse

Classic approach of the anterior wall of frontal sinus fracture involves bicoronal or direct forehead incisions. However, these methods have some disadvantages, for example, paresthesia, scarring, and even alopecia. The purpose of this study was to introduce the simple and effective method of reduction of the anterior wall of frontal sinus fracture with threaded K-wires. Thirteen patients with fracture of the anterior wall of the frontal sinus underwent our method from December 2005 to September 2011. The distance of threaded K-wires was measured by facial computed tomography, and those marks

OBJECTIVE: Nasoseptal injuries have traditionally been treated via closed reduction. Historically, the high incidence of postreduction deformities has led some surgeons to consider alternative approaches to obtain superior results. Here we compare simple closed reduction versus primary open repair of the nasoseptal fracture.
STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective study of 40 consecutive patients treated with simple closed reduction of their combined nasal bone and septal fracture versus 40 patients treated with closed reduction of their nasal bone fracture and open treatment of the septum. Grou
