BACKGROUND: Regional cerebral blood flow (CBF), a good indirect index of cerebral pathologic changes in Alzheimer disease (AD), is more severely reduced in patients with higher educational attainment and IQ when controlling for clinical severity. This has been interpreted as suggesting that cognitive reserve allows these patients to cope better with the pathologic changes in AD.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether premorbid engagement in various activities may also provide cognitive reserve.
DESIGN: We evaluated intellectual, social, and physical activities in 9 patients with early AD and 16 heal…

INTRODUCTION: Educational attainment is a key proxy of cognitive reserve (CR), but whether its association with cognition persists after accounting for multimodal brain pathology remains unclear.
METHODS: Data from PREVENT-AD and CIMA-Q were analyzed using cross-sectional, longitudinal, and residual-based models adjusted for multimodal pathology, including MRI-based white matter hyperintensities and atrophy measures, and plasma Alzheimer's disease biomarkers. Education was examined in both cohorts. A multidimensional CR questionnaire was also examined in CIMA-Q.
RESULTS: Higher education was…

Aging is associated with physical, cognitive, and emotional changes, with substantial interindividual variability in mental and physical health outcomes. This study investigates the role of cognitive reserve (CR) and resilience as protective factors against perceived stress, anxiety, and physical health issues (PHI) in older adults. CR was operationalized using the Cognitive Reserve Index Questionnaire (CRIq), treated as a lifestyle-based proxy of the neural construct. A total of 108 participants (aged 65-87 years) completed standardized assessments: CRIq, Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), State-T…

This study examines the associations between education, cerebral perfusion, and cognitive test performance among 132 patients with Alzheimer … ilateral parieto-temporo-frontal areas in moderate dementia. The present findings indicate that the cognitive reserve effect starts at the low end of the education range. They also suggest that the main effect of more education is a more facile use of alternative brain circuits instead of locally increased synaptic connections.

AIM: Evidence shows that self-perceptions of aging and cognitive reserve are respectively risk and protective factors for depression. However, prior research has largely relied on traditional regression analyses without adopting a systems perspective. Network analysis can reveal complex association patterns in depression-related systems. This study aimed to identify core and bridge nodes in a depression-related network model and examine the importance of self-perceptions of aging.
METHODS: A survey was conducted with 1019 participants from March to October 2023. Network analysis was conducted…

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have devastating negative consequences on an individuals' ability to remember information; however, there is variability among memory impairment resulting from TBI. Some individuals exhibit long-term memory (LTM) impairment while others do not. This variability has been explained, at least in part, by the theory of cognitive reserve (CR). The theory suggests that individuals who have spent significant time engaged in intellectually enriching activities (higher CR) are better able to withstand LTM impairment despite neurological injury. The cognitive mechanisms …

'Brain and cognitive reserve' (BCR) refers here to the accumulated neuroprotective reserve and capacity for functional compensation induced by the chronic enhancement of mental and physical activity. BCR is thought to protect against, and compensate for, a range of different neurodegenerative diseases, as well as other neurological and psychiatric disorders. In this review we will discuss BCR, and its potential mechanisms, in neurodegenerative disorders, with a focus on Huntington's disease (HD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD). Epidemiological studies of AD, and other forms of dementia, provided …

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition characterized by cognitive decline and brain atrophy. Recent evidence shows that the cerebellum also undergoes structural and functional alterations. The concept of cognitive reserve (CR) explains individual resilience to brain pathology, while the hypothesis of cerebellar cognitive reserve (CbCR) sustains an enhanced activity in cerebellar networks at rest and a more efficient recruitment of accessory areas during cognitive tasks. This study investigated structural connectivity changes in cerebellar-cortical n…

OBJECTIVE: Older adults (OA) after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) have a high risk of developing persistent post-injury cognitive impairments. Lower pre-morbid cognitive reserve (CR) is increasingly investigated as a risk factor for cognitive dysfunction in OA. However, how CR protects against effects of mTBI at the brain level remains largely understudied.
METHODS: We examined 22 OA who sustained mTBI (mean 67.69 years, SD 5.11) in the sub-acute phase and 15 age- and CR-matched healthy OA (mean 68 years, SD 5.55) performing a three-level visual N-back task using electroencephalography. W…
