The article presents the review of all published and not published results of clinical investigations of new polish collagen biomaterials that have been registered in Poland recently. Two main medical applications of the biomaterials--used as hemostatic tampons and/or as biological dressings for wound care have been described here. The collagen sponges proved to be useful in chronic wound care and for hemostasis of bleeding wounds. The collagen membranes are effective in extensive superficial wounds care (burns, skin donor places or wounds after dermabrasion).

Gastroschisis is a congenital anomaly in which the intestines are exposed to amniotic fluid throughout fetal life. Previous studies in animal models have demonstrated smooth muscle thickening and decreased contractility, epithelial dysfunction, and submucosal thickening. The present studies were done to further define the mechanism of submucosal changes by investigating collagen deposition and gene expression in a rabbit model. Gastroschisis was surgically created in fetal rabbits at 24 days gestation (term is 31 days). Sham-operated and unoperated fetuses served as controls. Fetuses were sacr…

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the early morphological and functional abnormalities of the heart in patients with collagen disease. The study population was free of risk factors for coronary artery disease and without any clinically evident cardiac manifestations. In 62 patients with collagen disease (25 with progressive systemic sclerosis, 19 with systemic lupus erythematosus, 15 with rheumatoid arthritis, three with dermatomyositis) and in 40 healthy subjects an echocardiographic study was performed. Echocardiographic examination from the apical four-chamber view was performed at r…

The epidermolysis bullosa acquisita (EBA) antigen is type VII collagen that is found within the anchoring fibrils of the basement membrane zone beneath stratified epithelia. Autoimmunity to the EBA antigen/type VII collagen has been associated with three diseases: EBA, bullous systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and a subset of linear IgA bullous diseases. Although some systemic diseases in which autoimmunity is thought to play a role (eg, inflammatory bowel disease, thyroiditis) have been reported in association with EBA, so far there have not been systemic diseases associated with autoimmunit…

This article is devoted to collagen vascular diseases of childhood. The connective tissue diseases that are discussed are lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, and dermatomyositis. Of the vasculitic syndromes, Henoch-Schönlein purpura, acute hemorrhagic edema of infancy, and polyarteritis nodosa are discussed. Although the collagen vascular diseases are rare in the pediatric age group, when they occur they can be very serious.

CIA is a unique experimental model of disease, which may be particularly relevant to the study of RA, since it represents a true autoimmune reaction against a major joint component. Since it represents a model of the association of MHC genes and disease, it has a broad relevance to the study of disease, particularly the contribution of class II MHC genes to autoimmunity. This disease model has been demonstrated in three species, and a marked influence of immunogenetic control is apparent. Native type II collagen is a large protein with a genetically conserved structure, giving rise to a number…

Glottic insufficiency has been successfully managed by Teflon augmentation of paretic vocal cords over the past two decades. Collagen fulfills the criteria for a suitable bioimplant and is an attractive alternative as it is a normal constituent of the extracellular protein matrix. This study explores the use of modified bovine collagen injected into the canine larynx. Clinical situations are simulated by creating lesions and injecting collagen at different sites. The technique permits precise placement and quantification. Histologic study of the collagen implant fails to show evidence of signi…

The heritable diseases of connective tissue are caused by known or putative defects in the synthesis of collagens, proteoglycans, glycoproteins, or attachment proteins of the extracellular matrix. Abnormal synthesis of type I collagen has been reported in several clinical variants of osteogenesis imperfecta. Because clinical classification of these variants is limited by genetic heterogenity and variable expression, biochemical criteria should be used for precise definition of the variants. Newly recognized molecular defects in osteogenesis imperfecta include the diminished formation of type I…

Synthesis of collagen and non-collagenous proteins was measured in fibroblast cultures derived from different layers of the dermis from a patient with an early stage of localized scleroderma. Increased synthesis of collagen was found in fibroblasts grown from the subcutaneous fat of this patient, whereas cells obtained from the papillary dermis revealed normal metabolism. These data agree with the results obtained in previous experiments with cells derived from patients with progressive systemic sclerosis in primary culture, thus indicating that the two diseases have a common pathomechanism. S…

Impairments in collagen metabolism were observed in patients with Dupuytren's contracture. These impairments were manifested as an increased excretion of hydroxyproline with urine and a decrease in content of the amino acid in tissues of aponeurosis palmaris of the patients. The alterations correlated with the damage caused by contracture. Increased catabolism of collagen appears to be the main reason of the metabolic impairments observed in Dupuytren's contracture, considering the opposite direction of changes in hydroxyproline content in urine and in aponeurosis palmaris of the patients. Imp…
