Diverticular disease of the colon is a common disease, and its incidence is increasing gradually. A giant colonic diverticulum (GCD) is a rare entity and is defined as a diverticulum greater than 4 cm in size. It mainly arises from the sigmoid colon, and possible etiology is a ball-valve mechanism permitting progressive enlargement. A plain abdominal X-ray can be helpful to make a diagnosis initially, and a barium enema and abdominal computed tomography may confirm the diagnosis. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the gastrointestinal tract is a rare entity. The present case is the first report of mucoepidermoid carcinoma in the large bowel. A 71-year-old man was admitted to our hospital to undergo surgery for a recurrent chordoma of the hip. In two patients examination of the small intestine by enteroclysis was indicated on account of haemorrhage into the digestive tract and severe anaemia and in one patient the ultrasonographic picture arousing suspicion of Crohn's disease of the terminal ileum. Although in all instances previously colonoscopy was made, considered complete, in one instance also irrigoscopy, with a negative result, enteroclysis revealed and surgery confirmed extensive carcinomas of the caecum and colon ascendens. The authors discuss the value and problems of the applied diagnostic method.

The results of preoperative ultrasound investigations were compared with the intraoperative findings in 42 patients (27 women, 15 men) operated on because of tumours of the cecum or colon ascendens. In 34 of 42 patients (i.e. 81%) the tumour could be correctly diagnosed by ultrasound. In 3 cases the investigator was not sure about imaging the tumour. Aluminum chloride (2.48 X 10(-4) to 1.24 X 10(-3) M) inhibits spontaneous motility of ascending colon of the rat. Resting tension was not affected. Resection for chronic ileocaecal Crohn's disease may be conservative with ileo-ascending-colon anastomosis, or be extended to standard right hemicolectomy. The two operations have been compared to determine whether preservation of the ascending colon is advantageous. Stool frequency, consistency and weight were similar after the two operations. A slower stool transit time was the only clinical difference associated with preservation of the ascending colon. An adaptable and patient-acceptable technique for domicillary collection of stools is described.

Over a period of two years (1977-1979) the diagnosis symptomatic vascular ectasias of the colon was made in 7 patients. The authors describe 3 cases with corresponding illustrations. The diagnostic value of selective mesenteric artery angiography and fiber endoscopy for the diagnosis and treatment is stressed. The possible pathogenesis of the vascular abnormality is discussed with reference to the histology and the literature.

Intussusception in adults is relatively rare. Here we report a 52-year-old man with an extensive colo-colonic intussusception caused by a polypoid mass in the ascending colon. The mass, which was 10 x 8 x 5 cm in size, had been palpated preoperatively and was suspected to be a sigmoid tumor. The patient was treated successfully by reduction of the invagination and subsequent right hemicolectomy.
