Long-term follow-up of composite resin restorations with self-etching adhesives.

OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis, derived from a previous short-term (7-day) assessment, that the absence of conventional pulp protection is not responsible for long-term pulp complications of composite resin restorations with self-etching adhesives. METHODS: All 150 patients who received the restorations with self-etching adhesives were recalled at least 2 years after the placement of restorations. Of the 47 patients (31%) who responded, 106 restorations aged from 2.2 to 6.5 years were examined for tooth sensitivity and pulp vitality regarding long-term pulp complications. The results were

Assuring restorative integrity in extensive posterior resin composite restorations: pushing the envelope.

Clinicians are increasingly being called on to satisfy the restorative demands of patients who request tooth-colored restorations but are unable to afford an optimum indirect restorative option. Consequently, in clinical practice, the limits of the direct posterior resin composite technique are being stretched. There is a need for techniques that will satisfy the complex variables of clinical practice and allow for successful utilization of posterior resin composite in large cavity preparations. The objective of this article is to explain the rationale behind the materials and techniques invol

The relationship between monomer composition and physical properties of light-cured opaque resin.

Light-cured opaque resins were prepared using four types of monomer liquids and titanium dioxide powder. This study investigated the relationship between the monomer composition and the physical properties of light-cured opaque resin. Depth of cure, KHN, residual monomer eluent, and bond strength between the opaque resin and cobalt-chromium alloy were measured. The physical properties of triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA)-based compositions were superior to those of methyl methacrylate (MMA)-based compositions. Viscosity of the opaque resin's liquid monomer was enhanced by 1,6-bis(metha

Monomer composition and bond strength of light-cured 4-META opaque resin.

A light-cured opaque resin was prepared with 4-(2-methacryloxyethoxycarbonyl) phthalic anhydride (4-META), bifunctional methacrylates, and titanium dioxide (TiO2). The relation between monomer composition and bond strength was examined with seven methacrylate monomers. Methyl methacrylate (MMA) was useful as a solvent of 4-META. However, it was not sufficiently cured by photo-initiator. The bond strength of a triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA)-based composition was superior to other monomer-based compositions after repeated thermocycles. 1,6-bis(methacryloxy-2-ethoxycarbonyl-amino)-2,4,

Comparative Evaluation of the Effect of Different Beverages on Color Stability of Two Single-Shade Composite Resins: An In Vitro Study.

Background Color stability is a critical property for the long-term success of aesthetic composite restorations. Recently introduced single-shade composite resins, such as Omnichroma (Tokuyama Dental, Tokyo, Japan) and Vittra APS Unique (FGM Dental Group, Joinville, Santa Catarina, Brazil), exhibit a chameleon effect that enhances shade matching. However, their resistance to staining from commonly consumed beverages remains inadequately explored. Aim The aim of this in vitro study was to comparatively evaluate the effect of different commonly consumed beverages on the color stability of two si…

Optimization of a novel dental self-healing resin composite by bacteria-induced biomineralization.

INTRODUCTION: Dental resin restorations often fail due to microcrack expansion, causing fractures and secondary caries. Self-healing resin composites based on Microbially Induced Calcium Carbonate Precipitation (MICP) offer a solution. In these composites, moisture and air activate bacteria to precipitate calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and repair microcracks. When a crack seals, bacteria become dormant or form spores until the next crack forms, triggering repeated self-healing. METHODS: This study involved the optimization of nutrients to enhance biocompatibility, the preparation of dental resin c

Influence of preheating resin composites: a nano-CT assessment on voids and internal adaptation.

Gap percentage at the restoration-tooth interface and internal voids remain significant limitations in resin-based composite restorations, contributing to marginal leakage, secondary caries, and restoration failure. Preheating composite resins has been proposed as a strategy to enhance adaptation and reduce polymerization-induced stress. To evaluate the influence of preheating resin composites and varying light-curing durations on gap percentage at the restoration-tooth interface, internal adaptation, and void formation in Class II restorations using high-resolution Nano-CT imaging. T700 Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Resin Composite Material Hygrothermal Aging Model.

The hygrothermal aging model, based on Fick's second law of diffusion, characterizes the degradation of engineering constants in T700 carbon fiber/epoxy resin composites. It focuses on changes in the tensile modulus, shear modulus, and transverse Poisson's ratio due to moisture absorption and temperature variations. The model validates through mass change observations before and after seawater immersion, along with surface morphology assessments and tensile experiments. The results reveal that the saturated moisture absorption rate for single-layer laminates in seawater immersion is 0.35%. Sho

A comparative study on the mechanical and antibacterial properties of BPA-free dental resin composites.

OBJECTIVE: The commonly used base monomer utilized in resinous commercial dental restorative products is bis-GMA which is derived from bisphenol-A (BPA) - a well-known compound which may disrupt endocrine functions. To address concerns about its leaching into the oral environment and to optimize the quality of dental composites, a BPA-free alternative base monomer, fluorinated urethane dimethacrylate (FUDMA), was designed by modifying a UDMA monomer system. METHODS: Nine groups of composites were prepared by mixing the base monomers and TEGDMA in a ratio of 70/30 wt% to which were added silan
