Exposure to potting soils and compost material as potential sources of Legionella pneumophilia in Australia.

Legionnaires' disease is a form of atypical community-acquired pneumonia usually caused by Legionella pneumophilia, which is typically associated with exposure to tower cooling or water systems. In Australia, Legionnaires' disease is more commonly caused by Legionella longbaechae, which is typically associated with exposure to soil or compost materials, and the presence of Legionella pneumophilia is less recognized. We report a sporadic case of Legionnaires' disease caused by Legionella pneumophilia serogroup 1 that was contracted following exposure to potting mix and topsoil.

Non-equilibrium zinc uptake onto compost particles from synthetic stormwater.

Zinc uptake onto different particle size compost was evaluated in batch and column studies using a synthetic stormwater to quantify sorption capacity and kinetics. The results showed that the pseudo equilibrium time for uptake increased from 2h to greater than 120h as the particle size of compost increased from 75μm to 6.75mm. This was due to intra-particle diffusion becoming a rate limiting process as the particle size increased. Column effluent data with 1.18mm particles could be fitted by Freundlich isotherm while that from the 4.75mm particles and a mixed particle size columns showed rate

Applicability of the Charm II system for monitoring antibiotic residues in manure-based composts.

The effluence of veterinary antibiotics (VAs) to aquatic and terrestrial environments is of concern due to the potential adverse effects on human health, such as the production of antibiotic resistant bacteria. One of the main pathways for antibiotics to enter the environment is via the application of manure and/or manure-based composts as an alternative organic fertilizer to agricultural lands. While a wide diversity of manure-based composts are produced in Korea, there is currently no regulatory guideline for VA residues. Hence, monitoring and limiting the concentration of VA residues in man

The adsorption and degradation of chlorpyriphos-methyl, pendimethalin and metalaxyl in solid urban waste compost.

To evaluate the feasibility of using compost to prepare substrates for the disposal of pesticide residues, adsorption and degradation studies were carried out on three widely used agricultural pesticides: chlorpyriphos-methyl, pendimethalin and metalaxyl. Obtained from solid urban waste, this compost has been shown to be able to adsorb high levels of chlorpyriphos-methyl and pendimethalin (85%, 100%) whereas metalaxyl was only adsorbed at a level of 37%. However, adding smectite to the compost increased the adsorption of metalaxyl by 117%. Chlorpyriphos-methyl and pendimethalin degraded quickl

Leaching composted lignocellulosic wastes to prepare container media: feasibility and environmental concerns.

The leaching of salt and mineral elements from three composts prepared with residual vegetable crop biomass (melon, pepper or zucchini) was … evels. Composts reacted differently to leaching due to differences in the raw waste sources and the composting process and hence, in their physical and chemical characteristics. At the end of the experiment, after pouring 8 container capacities of water, the leaching efficiency of the salts was 96%, 93% and 87% for melon, pepper and zucchini-based composts, …

Evaluation of composts and liming materials in the phytostabilization of a mine soil using perennial ryegrass.

A microcosm experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of municipal solid waste compost (MSWC) or garden waste compost (GWC), and liming materials in the rehabilitation of a soil affected by mining activities, and to study the use of perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) for phystostabilization. The performance of the amendments was assessed by soil chemical parameters, total and bioavailable metals (Cu, Pb and Zn), soil enzymatic activities, and plant relative growth and mineral composition. In general, both composts corrected soil acidity and increased the total organic matter conte

Use of wastewater and compost extracts as nutrient sources for growing nursery and turfgrass species.

Nutrient salts present in liquid by-products following waste treatment are lost resources if not effectively recycled, and can cause environmental problems if improperly disposed. This research compared the growth response and mineral nutrient status of two nursery and two turfgrass species, hydroponically supplied with nutritive by-product extracts derived from anaerobically digested municipal solid waste (MSW) and aerobically composted organic wastes from the mushroom and MSW industries. Forsythia (Forsythia x intermedia 'Lynwood') and weigela (Weigela florida 'Red Prince'), and creeping ben

Effect of chemical and microbial amendment on phosphorus runoff from composted poultry litter.

Environmental impacts of composting poultry litter with chemical amendments at the field scale have not been well quantified. The objectives of this study were to measure (i) P runoff and (ii) forage yield and N uptake from small plots fertilized with composted and fresh poultry litter. Two composting studies, aerated using mechanical turning, were conducted in consecutive years. Composted litter was collected at the completion of each study for use in runoff studies. Treatments in runoff studies included an unfertilized control, fresh (uncomposted) poultry litter, and litter composted with no…

Metals in vineyard soils of the Penedès area (NE Spain) after compost application.

The application of organic wastes to improve soil physical characteristics in mechanized vineyards planted after land levelling is becoming a common practice in Mediterranean areas. It may be useful as an additional source of organic matter and nutrients, but these wastes could also have negative effects due to their metal content. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of compost application on soil metal contents in mechanized vineyard soils of the Spanish Mediterranean area, where this practice is repeated every three years. The study was carried out in a ten-year-old vineyard w

Progressive exploration of the four municipal solid composting phases for microplastics pollution: Extraction, abundance, and distribution.

Research on microplastic (MP) pollution in agriculture is limited, particularly concerning municipal solid waste (MSW) compost, which is commonly used to enhance soil quality but can introduce MPs into agricultural systems. This study evaluates the density separation efficiency of ZnCl₂ and CaCl₂ in both spiked and non-spiked compost. It also tracks MP abundance and size distribution throughout the composting stages-mesophilic, thermophilic, curing, and mature-at a Canadian facility. The research employs a combination of three extraction methods: wet-sieving, organic digestion, and density sep…

Membrane-covered composting systems with microbial inoculation enhance humification by shifting regulation toward microbially mediated transformation.

Membrane-covered composting systems have been increasingly used to enhance humification, yet the microbial-metabolic mechanisms of humic substance (HS) transformation under inoculated conditions remain unclear. This study compared membrane-covered and uncovered composting systems under identical microbial inoculation conditions by integrating excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy (EEM-PARAFAC), untargeted metabolomics, and high-throughput microbial community profiling. Under microbial inoculation conditions, membrane covering increased humic-like components by 7.8% while reducin…

Metabolomic-Metabolite Profiling: Progressive Insight and Biochemical Pathway in Crude Oil Waste Sludge Co-Composting Bioremediation.

Background: Crude oil refinery waste sludge (COWS) ranks among the most compositionally complex and ecotoxicologically hazardous industrial residues. Although bulk total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) and summed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) removal are routinely reported, the metabolite-level biochemical fate of individual petrogenic compounds, spanning ring dihydroxylation, catechol cleavage, and entry into central carbon metabolism, remains largely unmapped under co-composting with diverse animal manures. Objectives: This study aimed to construct a metabolite-resolved, microbially anch…

Industrial composting of sewage sludge mitigates antimicrobial resistance risks and preserves bacterial dynamics in tropical soils.

Industrial-scale thermophilic composting of sewage sludge (SS) offers a promising strategy to reduce antimicrobial resistance risks in agricultural soils, although the impacts of its application on soils remain unclear. This study evaluated the impact of SS compost, produced thermophilically with and without lime, on antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) related to fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and bacterial communities in tropical clay and sandy loam soils over 100 days, using high-throughput qPCR and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Actinobacteriota…

Airborne antibiotics, antimicrobial resistance, and bacterial pathogens in a commercial composting facility: Transmission and exposure risk.

Multiple elements associated with antimicrobial resistance in compost may escape into the air during the composting process, including antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), human pathogenic bacteria (HPBs), and even antibiotics. Although antibiotics play a critical role in the evolution of resistance in HPBs, no information is available on airborne antibiotics in composting facilities. In this study, we systematically quantified airborne antibiotics, ARGs, and HPBs in comparison with those in compost. The burden of antibiotics in the air reached 4.17 ± 2.71 × 102 ng/g, significantly higher than …

Effects of magnesium-modified biochar on antibiotic resistance genes and microbial communities in chicken manure composting.

Abatement of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in livestock manure by composting has attracted attention. This study investigated the effect of adding magnesium-modified biochar (MBC) on ARGs and microbial communities in chicken manure composting. Twelve genes for tetracyclines, sulfonamides, and macrolides, and mobile genetic elements were measured in the compost pile. The results showed that after 45 days of the composting, the treatment groups of MBC had longer high temperature periods, significantly higher germination indices (GI) and lower phytotoxicity. There were four major dominant ph…

Inhibitory Effects of the Addition of KNO3 on Volatile Sulfur Compound Emissions during Sewage Sludge Composting.

Odor released from the sewage sludge composting process often has a negative impact on the sewage sludge treatment facility and becomes a hindrance to promoting compost technology. This study investigated the effect of adding KNO3 on the emissions of volatile sulfur compounds, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), dimethyl sulfide (DMS), and carbon disulfide (CS2), during sewage sludge composting and on the physicochemical properties of compost products, such as arylsulfatase activity, available sulfur, total sulfur, moisture content, and germination index. The results showed that the addition of KN…

Enhanced control of sulfonamide resistance genes and host bacteria during thermophilic aerobic composting of cow manure.

Traditional composting has already shown a certain effect in eliminating antibiotic residues, antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARBs), and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). It is worth noting that the rebounding of ARGs and the succession of the bacterial community during conventional aerobic composting are still serious threats. Considering the probable risk, improved and adaptable technologies are urgently needed to control antibiotic resistance efficiently. This study monitored how thermophilic aerobic composting affected the ARGs, as well as the bacterial diversity during the composting of …

Emission characteristics of VOCs and potential ozone formation from a full-scale sewage sludge composting plant.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the major components of the odor emitted from sewage sludge composting plants and are generally associated with odorous nuisances and health risks. However, few studies have considered the potential ozone generation caused by VOCs emitted from sewage sludge composting plants. This study investigated the VOC emissions from a full-scale composting plant. Five major treatment units of the composting plant were chosen as the monitoring locations, including the dewatered room, dewatered sludge, blender room, fermentation workshop, and product units. The ferment…
