Conduct disorder (CD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), collectively termed disruptive behavior disorders (DBDs), are a major cause of impairment and suffering in those affected by these conditions and their families and communities. The prevalence of DBDs is estimated at 5-14% in school-aged children,1 and they are costly to society and linked with negative adult outcomes.2 Unfortunately, few effective psychological treatments are available, and there is a lack of evidence-based pharmacological treatments for DBDs.3 The present study by Van Lith et al.4 investigates whether acute methy

In understanding and treatment of tension type headache the psychological stress is considered as one of the most important factors causing and strengthening headache. The aim of this work was the assessment of personality traits in patients suffering from tension-type headache. Methods of this study were based on investigation of the dimensions of personality using the Eysenck Personality Inventory EPQ-R and the assessment of psychological stress using a Questionnaire of Demographic Variables. The group of 120 patients suffering from tension-type headache was assessed and 30 control subjects

For any skilled performer to deliver their optimal performance, preparation must extend beyond task-specific skill development to include psychological skills training, physical conditioning, and injury prevention. The keynote lecture upon which this article is based (delivered at the International Symposium on Performance Science 2021) explored current research that demonstrates the importance of physical conditioning and injury prevention for drummers (i.e., percussionists who play the drum kit). Early results revealed that professional drummers' heart rates during live performances can reac

Trait anxiety is a form of chronic state anxiety that can be part of the individual's personality and one of the individual factors that increase the risk of developing PTSD. To be able to distinguish between trait and state anxiety in animal models might be challenging, since the tests themselves are often anxiogenic. One possible approach is the use of the free exploratory paradigm (FEP), a model that consists of providing the animal the choice to explore both a familiar and a novel environment. High trait anxiety animals choose to explore more the familiar environment. Thus, the objective o

Specific phobia is a common, heterogeneous disorder whose central feature is persistent, unreasonable fear of a circumscribed object or situation. This article reviews current etiological theories and empirical data that seem likely to be important in investigating the pathophysiology of this disorder. These include conditioning, modified conditioning, and nonassociative models of phobia development, physiological response to the phobic stimulus, neuroimaging, primate, and biological challenge studies. Pathophysiological hypotheses suggested by recent research on the neurocircuitry of conditio

BACKGROUND: A connection between stress-related illnesses and alcohol use disorders is extensively documented. Fear conditioning is a standard procedure used to study stress learning and links it to the activation of amygdala circuitry. However, the connection between the changes in amygdala circuitry and function induced by alcohol and fear conditioning is not well established.
METHODS: We introduce a computational model to test the mechanistic relationship between amygdala functional and circuit adaptations during fear conditioning and the impact of acute vs. repeated alcohol exposure. Usin

Previous research has reported a role for the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) in the extinction and renewal of conditioned fear. Here, the authors examine whether GABA is involved in the acquisition, extinction, renewal, spontaneous recovery, and latent inhibition of appetitive conditioning. Using Long-Evans rats, systemic injection of the GABA A receptor inverse agonist FG 7142 was shown to eliminate ABA renewal (Experiment 1) and spontaneous recovery (Experiment 4) of appetitive responding by selectively reducing the recovery of extinguished magazine approach. Furthermore, tr

Twenty-five patients (ages 10 to 79 years; average, 48 years) with fecal incontinence underwent anorectal manometry with a three-balloon system connected to a physiograph. On a basis of manometric criteria showing the presence of rectal sensation, 17 patients underwent biofeedback conditioning. Underlying disorders included irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes mellitus, anal sphincter damage from surgery or disease, and neurogenic anal dysfunction. Twelve of the 17 patients who received biofeedback training had significant improvement in bowel soiling. Follow-up periods ranged from 2 to 38 month

This paper proposes several hypotheses and research strategies for exploring possible psychological factors contributing to multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS). The hypotheses are based on concepts of individual response stereotypy, situational response specificity, classical conditioning of chemical-induced responses, and psychophysiological reactions to active and passive coping orientations. Hypotheses regarding hypersensitivity to perception and/or aversiveness of chemical stimulation also are presented. Strategies for evaluating these hypotheses are described based on experimental literat

The role of the perirhinal cortex in inhibitory eyeblink conditioning was examined. In Experiment 1, rats were given lesions of the perirhinal cortex or control surgery and subsequently trained with a feature-negative discrimination procedure followed by summation and retardation tests for conditioned inhibition. Perirhinal cortex lesions impaired, but did not prevent acquisition of feature-negative discrimination. Results from the summation test showed that rats with perirhinal cortex lesions could not generalize feature-negative discrimination to a new stimulus. There were no group differenc

The purpose of this study was first to develop an animal model for stress-induced digitalis toxicity in such a way that physical and psychological factors might be kept separate. The other purpose was to begin an analysis of the mechanism of this psychosomatic effect. To do this, free-ranging guinea pigs were subjected to repeated sessions of signaled shock (Pavlovian fear conditioning) or to signal alone. On a probe day in which signals were delivered as usual but shock was not administered, guinea pigs were infused i.v. with ouabain after an i.p. injection of either saline, atropine sulfate

The present experiment investigated the impact of contextually trained discriminations on gambling behavior. Nine recreational slot-machine players were initially exposed to concurrently available computerized slot machines that were each programmed on random-ratio schedules of reinforcement and differed only in color. All participants distributed responding equally across the two slot machines. A conditional discrimination procedure was then used to teach the contextual cues representing the arbitrary relations of "greater than" and "less than." Following contextual cue training, participants

Although previous research has observed generalisation of placebo hypoalgesia between discrete treatment cues, generalisation across diffuse features of the treatment context is yet to be demonstrated. This study aimed to determine whether placebo hypoalgesia established in a specific context (A) could generalise to a new context (B) and whether extinction of placebo hypoalgesia in the new context (B) could be renewed when later tested back in the original context (A). Placebo hypoalgesia was induced via verbal instruction and a typical conditioning paradigm involving pairing a sham TENS devic

Learning and memory related brain disorders represent a large unmet medical need. Laboratory studies with animals may model brain disorders and facilitate uncovering their mechanisms. The zebrafish has been proposed for such studies. However, numerous factors that influence performance in learning tasks have yet to be understood in zebrafish. One such factor is what motivates zebrafish. Here we introduce a novel reinforcer, an ecologically relevant unconditioned stimulus (US). We placed a photograph of gravel underneath quarter of the bottom of an experimental tank on one side and also positio

The use of fear conditioning and extinction paradigms to examine intermediate phenotypes of anxiety and stress-related disorders has facilitated the identification of neurobiological mechanisms that underlie specific components of abnormal psychological functioning. Across species, acute pharmacologic manipulation of the endogenous cannabinoid system has provided evidence of its critical role in fear extinction, but the effects of chronic cannabis on extinction are relatively understudied. In rats, chronic cannabinoid administration impairs fear extinction in a drug-free state. Here we examine

Inducing fear memory extinction by re-presenting a conditioned stimulus (CS) is the foundation of exposure therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Investigating differences in the ability of different CS presentation patterns to induce extinction learning is crucial for improving this type of therapy. Using a trace fear conditioning paradigm in mice, we demonstrate that spaced presentation of the CS facilitated the extinction of a strong fear memory to a greater extent than continuous CS presentation. These results lay the groundwork for developing more effective exposure therapy te

Remembering and forgetting are fundamental features of an organism. Extinction is a type of forgetting where there is a decrease in the significance and/or the meaning of an associative memory when elements of that memory no longer predict one another. The neural mechanisms underlying extinction of fear memories have been extensively studied in the laboratory because extinction processes are clinically relevant to exposure therapies that treat anxiety disorders. However, only in the last decade have we begun to unveil the similarities and differences in plasticity underlying extinction across
