[Male and female sterilization techniques: Summary of ANAES assessments (May 2005)].

OBJECTIVE: To summarize assessments carried out by ANAES on male and female sterilization techniques. The summary was requested by the French Health Directorate after the law authorizing sterilization as a means of contraception was passed. RESULTS (FEMALE STERILIZATION): (i) EFFICACY of tubal ligation, electrocoagulation, clips or rings: the annual pregnancy rate is 0-2% depending on the study, with no significant difference between techniques. No data were found on fimbriectomy. (ii) EFFICACY of a hysteroscopically placed micro-insert device: no pregnancies were observed in patients with bi

The use of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices in adolescents - own experience.

It is estimated that 19% of adolescents in Poland begin their sexual life when they are 15 years old and more than 50% of people aged 17-19 years have already had their first sexual contact. World Health Organization recommends teenagers to use the method of 'dual protection' (condom and other method of contraception, i.e. intrauterine devices). In this study, we sought to present our own experience in the field of the use of levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine devices in adolescents and to compare it with the experience of other researchers worldwide. Low- dose levonorgestrel-releasing intr

Migration of levonorgestrel IUS in a patient with complex medical problems: what should be done?

Patients with complex medical problems should be counselled about the need for highly effective contraception. As failure resulting in pregnancy, could cause significant morbidity and mortality. The LNG-IUS has gained great popularity and generally has a low side effect profile; however, perforation of the uterus and migration of the device is a potentially serious complication known to be associated with its use. The current accepted management is removal of the device from the abdominal cavity in order to prevent further morbidity. However this is not always a simple matter in patients who h

Women, contraception and STDs including HIV.

It is estimated that eight million women are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) worldwide. Heterosexual transmission is the predominant mode of HIV transmission on a global basis and is becoming increasingly important in the Western world. Women have long used contraceptives as a means of protection against an unwanted pregnancy, some of which may also protect against sexually transmitted disease (STD) including HIV. We review the relationship between contraceptive methods and STD acquisition and transmission; HIV acquisition and transmission; and the implications of contrace

Non-hormonal Contraception: Current and Emerging Targets.

There is a global need for effective, reversible contraception. While female hormonal options meet these criteria and are widely used, they are associated with side effects and may be contraindicated for women with certain pre-existing medical conditions. To meet the needs of women who cannot take or cannot tolerate these medications, several non-hormonal options are currently available, including copper intrauterine devices (IUDs), spermicides, and a new vaginal pH modulator (VPM). Several other options are currently in development, including vaginal rings, gels, and vaginally administered an

[Contraception: CNGOF Guidelines for Clinical Practice (Short Version)].

The French College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (CNGOF) releases its first global recommendations for clinical practice in contraception, to provide physicians with an updated synthesis of available data as a basis for their practice. The French Health Authority (HAS) methodology was used. Twelve practical issues were selected by the organizing committee and the task force members. The available literature was screened until December 2017, and allowed the release of evidence-based, graded recommendations. This synthesis is issued from 12 developed texts, previously reviewed by experts and phys

The correlation between family planning program inputs and contraceptive use in Indonesia.

Using 1980 Census and 1986 service statistics program inputs, this paper evaluates the net correlation of socioeconomic, region, and program variables with 1987 contraceptive prevalence and method-specific use rates for Indonesian regencies and municipalities. The region variables--primarily, though not exclusively, reflecting program design and maturity--correlate most strongly with the contraceptive prevalence rates. Field-worker activities, field-worker supervisor activities, and community-based distributors also have a correlation with these rates. Pill use is highest in the areas that are

Men's involvement in family planning in rural Bangladesh.

Contraceptive prevalence has risen markedly in rural Bangladesh due in part to a doorstep-delivery system initiated by the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B). This study investigates effects of residence in the Matlab MCH-FP treatment area on men's involvement in family planning. The analysis compares for treatment and comparison areas knowledge of and attitudes toward contraception, as well as levels of contraceptive use, among 413 married men interviewed at the baseline of an ICDDR,B men's involvement project. Although residence in the MCH-FP area is a

Effects of artificial cryptorchidism on sperm morphology.

In a diurnal artificial cryptorchidism (AC) experiment intended to provide a male contraceptive method, oligoasthenozoospermia was found as early as the fourth month, accompanied by an increase in the mean percentage of abnormally shaped spermatozoa. A detailed morphologic study concerning 19 volunteers exposed for 6 to 24 months demonstrated that the overall increase of the mean percentage of abnormally shaped spermatozoa resulted from the percentage increase of elongated, thin, and irregular heads and of bent tails. This increase is probably caused by the rise in environmental testicular tem

A comparison of the performance of male and female CBD distributors in Peru.

This report presents the results of an operations research project to increase male involvement in family planning in Peru. Two community-based distribution (CBD) programs, PROFAMILIA of Lima and CENPROF of Trujillo, Peru, recruited male contraceptive distributors and compared their performance to that of female distributors recruited at the same time. Both programs found it harder to recruit men than women as distributors. Program supervisors, who were women, were less comfortable with men than with other women, even though there were no differences in distributor compliance with program norm

Hormonal intrauterine device use is related to mental rotations but not verbal memory skills.

There is perennial public and scientific interest in the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying the large gender difference in three-dimensional (3D) mental rotation skills (favoring men) and small-to-moderate difference in verbal memory (favoring women). Past research has linked androgenic progestins in oral contraceptives to enhanced spatial skills, particularly 3D mental rotations, and estradiol to enhanced verbal memory skills. Hormonal intrauterine devices (IUDs) contain an androgenic progestin (i.e., levonorgestrel) without synthetic estradiol, but there is little-to-no systematic research

Risk factors for menstrual toxic shock syndrome: results of a multistate case-control study.

For assessment of current risk factors for developing toxic shock syndrome (TSS) during menstruation, a case-control study was performed. Cases with onset between 1 January 1986 and 30 June 1987 were ascertained in six study areas with active surveillance for TSS. Age-matched controls were selected from among each patient's friends and women with the same telephone exchange. Of 118 eligible patients, 108 were enrolled, as were 185 "friend controls" and 187 telephone exchange-matched controls. Tampon use was a risk factor for developing TSS during menstruation (odds ratio = 29; 95% confidence i
