Integrating cooperative breeding with reciprocity and culture extends Hamilton's rule to humans.

We study how kinship and reciprocity shape giving and child care support in societies with limited access to markets. Extending Hamilton's rule to incorporate reciprocity, we test it using behavioral data from dictator games and surveys in remote matrilocal and patrilocal villages of northeast India (N = 406 parents of young children). We replicate with data from urban Manila neighborhoods (N = 301) and the Solomon Islands (N = 624). Consistent with predictions, transfers to recipients increase with genetic relatedness to the donor and even more with relatedness to the donor's child-a hallmark

From Core Facility to Collaborative Partner: Reimagining Institutional Shared Resources as CRO-Model Research Partners Enhanced by Agentic AI.

Academic biomedical research institutions are confronting a converging challenge: tightening federal research budgets and growing demands for faster and more reproducible science,1 and increasing pressure to maximize value derived from every research dollar. Traditional shared resources have enabled access to sophisticated technologies and expertise as transactional, fee-for-service facilities that prioritize throughput and cost recovery over scientific outcomes. We propose a shift toward a Contract Research Organization (CRO)-inspired operating model in which shared resources function as inte

Decide when to cooperate.

Social cooperation requires the ability to synchronize actions with a partner. In this issue of Neuron, Shi et al.1 show that neural activity in dorsomedial frontal cortex accumulates socially relevant visual information to guide the timing of coordinated actions.

Now we see the violence inherent in the tinkering.

The concept of social tinkering is useful, but insufficient to explain the evolution of human cultural complexity due to its overemphasis on cooperative interactions. The importance of conflict, violence, and inequality in the evolution of complex cultures complicates the social tinkering hypothesis. Who gets to tinker, and what determines which products of that tinkering are selected?

Cooperation patterns in depression: Insights from a meta-analysis of responsive and expressive social interactive paradigms.

The use of high-ecological validity social interactive paradigms to study social impairments in depression has burgeoned in recent 10 years. However, abnormal social behaviors in depression have exhibited substantial yet unexplained variations, ranging from reduced to increased cooperation. We proposed an attentional focus theory and introduced a novel classification of social interactive paradigms, distinguishing between responsive (attentional focus on others) and expressive (attentional focus on self) paradigms. This framework systematically elucidates the underlying reasons for reduced and

Collaborative approaches with stakeholders in speech-language pathology: Narrative literature review.

INTRODUCTION: Collaborative approaches in speech-language pathology (SLP) aim to integrate the experience of clients and people important to them by including these stakeholders actively in decision making. This inclusion can lead to more effective, engaging, and safer SLP practice. A variety of collaborative approaches have evolved in response to sociocultural contexts, and as a result, there are many different approaches currently in use such as co-design, co-production, and co-creation. However, despite widening acceptance and utilisation of collaborative approaches, the use and evidence fo

Prosocial punishment bots breed social punishment in human players.

Prosocial punishment, an important factor to stabilize cooperation in social dilemma games, often faces challenges like second-order free-riders-who cooperate but avoid punishing to save costs-and antisocial punishers, who defect and retaliate against cooperators. Addressing these challenges, our study introduces prosocial punishment bots that consistently cooperate and punish free-riders. Our findings reveal that these bots significantly promote the emergence of prosocial punishment among normal players due to their 'sticky effect'-an unwavering commitment to cooperation and punishment that m

The dynamics of casual groups can keep free-riders at bay.

Understanding the conditions for maintaining cooperation in groups of unrelated individuals despite the presence of non-cooperative members is a major research topic in contemporary biological, sociological, and economic theory. The N-person snowdrift game models the type of social dilemma where cooperative actions are costly, but there is a reward for performing them. We study this game in a scenario where players move between play groups following the casual group dynamics, where groups grow by recruiting isolates and shrink by losing individuals who then become isolates. This describes the

Network rewiring promotes cooperation in an aspirational learning model.

We analyze a cooperative decision-making model that is based on individual aspiration levels using the framework of a public goods game in static and dynamic networks. Sensitivity to differences in payoff and dynamic aspiration levels modulates individual satisfaction and affects subsequent behavior. The collective outcome of such strategy changes depends on the efficiency with which aspiration levels are updated. Below a threshold learning efficiency, cooperators dominate despite short-term fluctuations in strategy fractions. Categorizing players based on their satisfaction level and the resu

Cross-cultural variation in cooperation: A meta-analysis.

Impersonal cooperation among strangers enables societies to create valuable public goods, such as infrastructure, public services, and democracy. Several factors have been proposed to explain variation in impersonal cooperation across societies, referring to institutions (e.g., rule of law), religion (e.g., belief in God as a third-party punisher), cultural beliefs (e.g., trust) and values (e.g., collectivism), and ecology (e.g., relational mobility). We tested 17 preregistered hypotheses in a meta-analysis of 1,506 studies of impersonal cooperation in social dilemmas (e.g., the Public Goods G

Clustering knowledge and dispersing abilities enhances collective problem solving in a network.

Diversity tends to generate more and better ideas in social settings, ranging in scale from small-deliberative groups to tech-clusters and cities. Implicit in this research is that there are knowledge-generating benefits from diversity that comes from mixing different individuals, ideas, and perspectives. Here, we utilize agent-based modeling to examine the emergent outcomes resulting from the manipulation of how diversity is distributed and how knowledge is generated within communicative social structures. In the context of problem solving, we focus on cognitive diversity and its two forms: a

Neurofibromatosis Clinical Trial Consortium.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 and type 2, affecting both children and adults, often results in devastating complications. The rapid unravelling of the genetic underpinnings of these unique disorders has led to the development of novel therapies, especially molecular-targeted therapies. To facilitate clinical trial development, the Neurofibromatosis Clinical Trial Consortium (NFCTC) was established in 2006 by the Department of Defense. Over the past decade, the Consortium has successfully completed studies for children and adults with neurofibromatosis type 1 and plexiform neurofibromas, neurocognit

The Value and Relevance of the T Cell Lymphoma Registries and International Collaborations: the Case of COMPLETE and the T-Cell Project.

Peripheral T cell lymphomas (PTCLs) are a heterogeneous group of lymphoid malignancies that portend a poor prognosis and have an undefined optimal therapeutic strategy. Data on best practices stem from prior studies that have generally included B cell lymphomas. However, the enhanced ability to diagnose PTCLs, the development of newer agents specific for PTCLs, and its increased incidence have called the scientific community to develop better strategies to combat these neoplasms. To that end, T cell lymphoma registries were developed in an attempt to answer relevant questions on the prognosis

Two wrongs don't make a right: the initial viability of different assessment rules in the evolution of indirect reciprocity.

Indirect reciprocity models are meant to correspond to simple moral systems, in which individuals assess the interactions of third parties in order to condition their cooperative behavior. Despite the staggering number of possible assessment rules in even the simplest of these models, previous research suggests that only a handful are evolutionarily stable against invasion by free riders. These successful assessment rules fall into two categories, one which positively judges miscreants when they refuse to help other miscreants, the other which does not. Previous research has not, however, demo

Beneficial laggards: multilevel selection, cooperative polymorphism and division of labour in threshold public good games.

BACKGROUND: The origin and stability of cooperation is a hot topic in social and behavioural sciences. A complicated conundrum exists as defectors have an advantage over cooperators, whenever cooperation is costly so consequently, not cooperating pays off. In addition, the discovery that humans and some animal populations, such as lions, are polymorphic, where cooperators and defectors stably live together--while defectors are not being punished--, is even more puzzling. Here we offer a novel explanation based on a Threshold Public Good Game (PGG) that includes the interaction of individual an

Does culture influence what and how we think? Effects of priming individualism and collectivism.

Do differences in individualism and collectivism influence values, self-concept content, relational assumptions, and cognitive style? On the one hand, the cross-national literature provides an impressively consistent picture of the predicted systematic differences; on the other hand, the nature of the evidence is inconclusive. Cross-national evidence is insufficient to argue for a causal process, and comparative data cannot specify if effects are due to both individualism and collectivism, only individualism, only collectivism, or other factors (including other aspects of culture). To address

Designing computer-based frameworks that facilitate doctor--patient collaboration.

A current trend in medicine involves establishing collaborative problem solving between patients and physicians in order to involve patients more in their own care. Neither diagnosis nor therapy can be completely successful unless the patient and the doctor understand each other and collaborate with each other in an effort to gauge the other's requests, needs and concerns. This is made even more difficult by the fact that there is often a big difference between the doctors and patients in terms of expectations, vocabulary used, and other factors. For diagnosis of many disorders, a detailed des
