Simulation of encounter rates between zooplankton organisms and microplastics in a tropical estuary.

Coastal estuarine systems may hold a large number of microplastic particles, which predators often mistake for prey. This study estimated the encounter rates between microplastics (alleged prey) and zooplankton having different feeding modes, trophic positions, swimming velocities, and perception distances, under calm and turbulent conditions, and during two seasons. Surface water samples were taken at 10/12 sites of the Sontecomapan lagoon, southern Gulf of Mexico, to quantify microplastic concentration. Zooplankton organisms considered were copepods, chaetognaths, and luciferids, common orga

Variation in volatile organic compounds in Atlantic salmon mucus is associated with resistance to salmon lice infection.

Salmon lice are ectoparasites that threaten wild and farmed salmonids. Artificial selection of salmon for resistance to the infectious copepodid lice stage currently relies on in vivo challenge trials on thousands of salmon a year. We challenged 5750 salmon with salmon lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) from two distinct farmed strains of salmon in two separate trials. We found that volatile organic compounds (VOC), 1-penten-3-ol, 1-octen-3-ol and 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one in the mucus of the salmon host after salmon lice infection, were significantly associated with lice infection numbers across a

Effects of Temephos (Abate®), Spinosad (Natular®), and Diflubenzuron on the Survival of Cyclopoid Copepods.

Dracunculus medinensis, also known as the African Guinea worm, is the causative agent of dracunculiasis and the focus of the global Guinea Worm Eradication Program (GWEP). Transmission of D. medinensis to humans occurs primarily by drinking water containing cyclopoid copepods infected with third-stage D. medinensis larvae. A common intervention to interrupt transmission and decrease the number of copepods in infected water bodies is the application of the organophosphate larvicide Abate® (temephos). However, the use of alternative compounds to help decrease copepod populations would be benefic

Salmon lice survive the straight shooter: A commercial scale sea cage trial of laser delousing.

Ectoparasitic salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) infestations are costly for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farmers in Norway. As a result, there is a strong desire for solutions to prevent and control infestations, and new technologies are typically developed and commercialised rapidly, without rigorous validation. Here, we tested the efficacy of a new commercially available control measure-delousing by underwater lasers-using a replicated design at full commercial scale. Laser delousing was used in combination with a preventive method (snorkel cages), with laser nodes deployed in 3 of the

A selection study on a laboratory-designed population of salmon lic (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) using organophosphate and pyrethroid pesticides.

Resistance towards antiparasitic agents in the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) is a widespread problem along the Norwegian coast, reducing treatments efficacies and slowing down the envisioned expansion of Norwegian salmon production. The present study was conducted in order to assess the efficacies of two of the most widely used anti-parasitic substances-azamethiphos and deltamethrin-as well as assessing the benefit of having a resistant genotype compared to being fully sensitive when exposed to one of these substances. Atlantic salmon were exposed to a mix of salmon lice copepodids fr

Morphological identification and DNA barcoding of a new species of Parabrachiella (Siphonostomatoida: Lernaeopodidae) with aspects of their intraspecific variation.

We present a detailed morphological description and a DNA barcoding of Parabrachiella platensis n. sp. collected from Mugil liza Valenciennes in Samborombon Bay (Buenos Aires, Argentina). This new species was compared with two Parabrachiella species parasitic on mugilids: Parabrachiella exilis (Shiino, 1956) and Parabrachiella mugilis (Kabata, Raibaut et Ben Hassine, 1971). Parabrachiella platensis n. sp. differs from those species in the shape of posterior processes, the anal slit with two pairs of bipartite papillae, the size of cephalothorax, the trunk, the maxilla, the microhabitat on the

Variation in pre-treatment count lead time and its effect on baseline estimates of cage-level sea lice abundance.

Treatment efficacy studies typically use pre-treatment sea lice abundance as the baseline. However, the pre-treatment counting window often varies from the day of treatment to several days before treatment. We assessed the effect of lead time on baseline estimates, using historical data (2010-14) from a sea lice data management programme (Fish-iTrends). Data were aggregated at the cage level for three life stages: (i) chalimus, (ii) pre-adult and adult male and (iii) adult female. Sea lice counts were log-transformed, and mean counts by lead time relative to treatment day were computed and com

Temperature Affects the Use of Storage Fatty Acids as Energy Source in a Benthic Copepod (Platychelipus littoralis, Harpacticoida).

The utilization of storage lipids and their associated fatty acids (FA) is an important means for organisms to cope with periods of food shortage, however, little is known about the dynamics and FA mobilization in benthic copepods (order Harpacticoida). Furthermore, lipid depletion and FA mobilization may depend on the ambient temperature. Therefore, we subjected the temperate copepod Platychelipus littoralis to several intervals (3, 6 and 14 days) of food deprivation, under two temperatures in the range of the normal habitat temperature (4, 15 °C) and under an elevated temperature (24 °C), an

Influencing factors of disinfection byproducts formation during chloramination of Cyclops metabolite solutions.

Effects of reaction time, chlorine dosage, pH and temperature on the formation of disinfection byproducts (DBPs), were investigated during the chloramination of Cyclops metabolite solutions. The results showed that some species of DBPs like trichloromethane (TCM), dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and trichloroacetic acid (TCAA) could accumulate to their respective stable values with a progressive elevation in reaction time and monochloramine concentration. And 1,1,1-2-trichloropropanone (1,1,1-TCP) content decreased correspondingly with a continuous increase of reaction time. The amounts of chloral

Limited potential for adaptation to climate change in a broadly distributed marine crustacean.

The extent to which acclimation and genetic adaptation might buffer natural populations against climate change is largely unknown. Most models predicting biological responses to environmental change assume that species' climatic envelopes are homogeneous both in space and time. Although recent discussions have questioned this assumption, few empirical studies have characterized intraspecific patterns of genetic variation in traits directly related to environmental tolerance limits. We test the extent of such variation in the broadly distributed tidepool copepod Tigriopus californicus using lab

Effects of some environmental parameters on the reproduction and development of a tropical marine harpacticoid copepod Nitocra affinis f. californica Lang.

The effects of salinity, temperature, and light conditions on the reproduction and development of harpacticoid copepod, Nitocra affinis f. californica under controlled laboratory conditions were determined. Seven different salinity levels (5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35 ppt), four temperatures (20, 25, 30, 35 degrees C), three different light intensities (25, 56, 130 micromol m(-2) s(-1)) and photoperiods (24 h:0 h, 1 h:23 h, 12 h:12 h LD cycle) were employed in this study. The highest (p < 0.05) overall reproduction and fastest development time were achieved by copepods reared under 30-35 ppt sali

Highly structured populations of copepods at risk to deep-sea mining: Integration of genomic data with demogenetic and biophysical modelling.

Copepoda is the most abundant taxon in deep-sea hydrothermal vents, where hard substrate is available. Despite the increasing interest in seafloor massive sulphides exploitation, there have been no population genomic studies conducted on vent meiofauna, which are known to contribute over 50% to metazoan biodiversity at vents. To bridge this knowledge gap, restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing, specifically 2b-RADseq, was used to retrieve thousands of genome-wide single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) from abundant populations of the vent-obligate copepod Stygiopontius lauensis from the La…

Toxicity assessment of leachates from rubber and mineral-based infill materials on marine plankton.

Crumb rubber, derived from recycled tyres, has been used as a sustainable, low-cost infill material. However, growing evidence suggests that tyre crumb rubber leachates can be highly toxic, underscoring the need for comprehensive risk assessments of different types of rubber and the development of safer alternatives. This study evaluated the acute toxicity of leachates from various infill materials, including black recycled tyre rubbers, coloured thermoplastic rubbers, and a mineral-based material ("Bioflex"), on key models of marine plankton. Specifically, we determined the effects of microni

Genes of filter-feeding species as a potential toolkit for monitoring microplastic impacts.

Microplastics (MPs) are ubiquitous in the marine environment and impact organisms at multiple levels. Understanding their actual effects on wild populations is urgently needed. This study develops a toolkit to monitor changes in gene expression induced by MPs in natural environments, focusing on filter-feeding and bioindicator species from diverse ecological and taxonomic groups. Six candidate genes -Caspase, HSP70, HSP90, PK, SOD, and VTG- and nine filter-feeding species -two branchiopods, one copepod, five bivalves and one fish- were selected based on differential expression in response to M

Trends in sea lice infestations on chum and pink salmon in the Broughton Archipelago remain unchanged despite removal of finfish aquaculture.

To better understand the relative contributions of sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus clemensi from farmed and non-farmed sources, infestations with sea lice are described on juvenile chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta and pink salmon O. gorbuscha from the Broughton Archipelago (BA) in coastal British Columbia, Canada, during a period of declining salmon aquaculture presence. A total of 2868 salmon were collected by beach seine from 14 sites between 2016 and 2024 and examined for sea lice infestation by microscope. During this time, production of Atlantic salmon in open netpens in the BA

Diversity and community structure of ectoparasites infecting some elasmobranch species off the Tunisian coast.

With more than 62 reported species, Tunisia has a rich diversity of elasmobranchs. However, investigations of their parasites in Tunisian waters remain rare and fragmented. With the global biodiversity crisis that most living species are facing, the study of parasite diversity is crucial for assessing ecosystem health and host-parasite interactions. In this study, 2,092 specimens of cartilaginous fishes (Chondrichthyes: Elasmobranchii) belonging to eight species, six genera and five families were sampled along the Tunisian coast and examined for their ectoparasites. The different host species

The copepod Acartia spinicauda feeds less and dies more under the influences of solar ultraviolet radiation and elevated pCO2.

While solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is known to impact zooplankton, little has been documented on its impacts under elevated pCO2. Here, we show that exposure to UVR decreased the feeding and survival rates of the copepod Acartia spinicauda, that artificial UV-B of 2.25 W·m-2 for 4 h resulted in a 52 % inhibition of its grazing rates and a 45 % reduction in survival rates compared to visible light alone. On the other hand, an increase in pCO2 to 1000 μatm (pH drop of 0.4) immediately and significantly increased the UVR-induced inhibition of feeding. Subsequently, the combination of the hig
