Goby spotting: An updated guide to coral gobies (Genus: Gobiodon) in the Indo-Pacific Region.

Genus Gobiodon are obligate coral dwelling cryptic fishes. Gobiodon form a mutualistic relationship with host scleractinian corals, making t … n be observed occupying host corals of the genera Acropora,Stylophora, Hydnophora and Echinopora on coral reefs in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Gobiodon species are known for their cryptic behaviours and are distinguishable using body colouration and colour markings. There are 31 described species, 26 of which have undisputed species status and sufficient d …

Coral larval settlement preference for crustose coralline algae can enhance coral persistence and restoration success.

As coral reefs shift towards algal-dominated states worldwide, there is increasing interest in designing management interventions to slow or halt these declines. Crustose coralline algae (CCA), a major benthic component of many reef systems, have important interactions with coral, yet their role in coral-algal regime shifts is not well understood. In recent studies, CCA has been shown to be either beneficial or antagonistic to coral larvae depending on the CCA species. This species-specific variability may play a large role in supporting or opposing regime shifts, as dominance of more antagoni…

Effects of future climate on coral-coral competition.

As carbon dioxide (CO2) levels increase, coral reefs and other marine systems will be affected by the joint stressors of ocean acidification (OA) and warming. The effects of these two stressors on coral physiology are relatively well studied, but their impact on biotic interactions between corals are poorly understood. While coral-coral interactions are less common on modern reefs, it is important to document the nature of these interactions to better inform restoration strategies in the face of climate change. Using a mesocosm study, we evaluated whether the combined effects of ocean acidific…

Branching archaeocyaths as ecosystem engineers during the Cambrian radiation.

The rapid origination and diversification of major animal body plans during the early Cambrian coincide with the rise of Earth's first animal-built framework reefs. Given the importance of scleractinian coral reefs as ecological facilitators in modern oceans, we investigate the impact of archaeocyathan (Class Archaeocyatha) reefs as engineered ecosystems during the Cambrian radiation. In this study, we present the first high-resolution, three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions of branching archaeocyathide (Order Archaeocyathida) individuals from three localities on the Laurentian paleocontinent.…

Self-recognition in corals facilitates deep-sea habitat engineering.

The ability of coral reefs to engineer complex three-dimensional habitats is central to their success and the rich biodiversity they support. In tropical reefs, encrusting coralline algae bind together substrates and dead coral framework to make continuous reef structures, but beyond the photic zone, the cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa also forms large biogenic reefs, facilitated by skeletal fusion. Skeletal fusion in tropical corals can occur in closely related or juvenile individuals as a result of non-aggressive skeletal overgrowth or allogeneic tissue fusion, but contact reactions in man…

Disease resistance in coral is mediated by distinct adaptive and plastic gene expression profiles.

Infectious diseases are an increasing threat to coral reefs, resulting in altered community structure and hindering the functional contributions of disease-susceptible species. We exposed seven reef-building coral species from the Caribbean to white plague disease and determined processes involved in (i) lesion progression, (ii) within-species gene expression plasticity, and (iii) expression-level adaptation among species that lead to differences in disease risk. Gene expression networks enriched in immune genes and cytoskeletal arrangement processes were correlated to lesion progression rates…

Differential coral response to algae contact: Porites tissue loss, praise for Halimeda interaction at southeast coast of India.

Worldwide, reef building corals are being degraded due to increasing anthropogenic pressure, and as a result, macroalgal cover is being increased. Hence, mechanism of coral-algal interaction, differential coral response to algal overgrowth, is critical from every geographical location to predict future coral dynamics. This paper documents the frequency of coral-algal (Halimeda) interactions, differential coral response to algal interaction. We found difference in susceptibility among coral genera to competitive effects. Out of 970 coral colonies surveyed, 36.7% were in contact with Halimeda sp

Environmental drivers of metabolomic profiles within and between cryptic lineages of Montastraea cavernosa, the great star coral.

INTRODUCTION: Reef restoration practitioners aim to preserve coral genetic diversity by protecting reefs and cultivating diverse genotypes in coral nurseries. However, cryptic genetic lineages in most corals complicate restoration strategies, as the role of between-lineage genetic divergence remains unclear regarding adaptation. In Montastraea cavernosa, researchers have identified cryptic lineages, some strongly segregated by depth. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to quantify lineage-specific responses to the environment that explain the genetic and ecological divergence between the two lineages. METH

Trophic Antioxidant Transfer as a Measure for Scalable Coral Conservation Strategies.

Coral reefs are increasingly threatened by elevated seawater temperatures associated with heatwaves and El Niño events. These phenomena challenge conventional management practices, highlighting an urgent need for innovative interventions to enhance reef resilience. Investigating the role of oxidative stress-one of the main explanations for coral bleaching-is central to these efforts, as excessive production of reactive oxygen species can impair coral physiology, disrupt the coral-algal symbiosis, and ultimately lead to mortality. Here, we investigated an antioxidant-rich food web approach by f…

High-resolution photogrammetry reveals links between reef structural complexity, fish communities, and human influence in a remote Pacific atoll.

Coral reef degradation is accelerating globally, yet monitoring efforts remain uneven in scale, accessibility, and resolution. Visual surveys of percent live coral cover offer low-cost but coarse assessments of reef health, while more advanced tools (e.g., autonomous underwater vehicles, airborne LiDAR) often remain inaccessible for many low-income, tropical nations. In this study, we used low-cost, high-resolution Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry across 21 sites in Ulithi Atoll, Federated States of Micronesia, spanning a gradient of oceanic and lagoonal exposure, fishing pressure, a

Recreational Diver Behavior and Contacts with Benthic Organisms in the Abrolhos National Marine Park, Brazil.

In the last two decades, coral reefs have become popular among recreational divers, especially inside marine protected areas. However, the impact caused by divers on benthic organisms may be contributing to the degradation of coral reefs. We analyzed the behavior of 142 scuba divers in the Abrolhos National Marine Park, Brazil. We tested the effect of diver profile, reef type, use of additional equipment, timing, and group size on diver behavior and their contacts with benthic organisms. Eighty-eight percent of divers contacted benthic organism at least once, with an average of eight touches a…

Salivary miRNA panel to detect HPV-positive and HPV-negative head and neck cancer patients.

Coral reefs are deteriorating worldwide from the combined pressures of global climate change and local stressors. As such, reef restoration interventions are being applied to boost natural recovery and reef health. Outplanting success reported for restoration activities to date has been highly variable. This study evaluated factors that influence outplanting success at an impacted reef, including site preparation (cleaning substrate vs uncleaned) and outplant size for two coral species-Pocillopora acuta (branching) and Porites lutea (massive). To assess overall success, survivorship, health an…

Millepora species (Fire Coral) Sting: A Case Report and Review of Recommended Management.

Fire corals (Millepora spp) are the second most common reef-forming organisms and are frequently found in tropical and subtropical waters. Fire corals are not true corals but rather hydrozoans more closely related to jellyfish and sea nettles. Rigidly affixed to the reef and with a branching structure, each fire coral is a colony of numerous individual hydrozoans forming a collective symbiotic organism. It is common for divers to accidentally make contact with fire corals. Fire coral contact is characterized by the immediate onset of burning pain caused by venom discharge from numerous tiny ne

Diversity and pathogenic potential of vibrios isolated from Abrolhos Bank corals.

We performed the first taxonomic characterization of vibrios and other culturable microbiota from apparently healthy and diseased Brazilian-endemic corals at the Abrolhos reef bank. The diseases affecting corals were tissue necrosis in Phyllogorgia dillatata, white plague and bleaching in Mussismilia braziliensis and bleaching in Mussismilia hispida. Bacterial isolates were obtained from mucus of 22 coral specimens originated from the Abrolhos Bank (i.e. Itacolomis reef, Recife de Fora reef and Santa Barbara Island) in 2007. Vibrios counts in the water and coral mucus were approximately 104 cf

Nutrient starvation and nitrate pollution impairs the assimilation of dissolved organic phosphorus in coral-Symbiodiniaceae symbiosis.

Phosphorus (P) is an essential but limiting nutrient for coral growth due to low concentrations of dissolved inorganic concentrations (DIP) in reef waters. P limitation is often exacerbated when concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) increase in the reef. To increase their access to phosphorus, corals can use organic P dissolved in seawater (DOP). They possess phosphatase enzymes that transform DOP into DIP, which can then be taken up by coral symbionts. Although the concentration of DOP in reef waters is much higher than DIP, the dependence of corals on this P source is still po

Coral diseases near Lee Stocking Island, Bahamas: patterns and potential drivers.

The number of coral diseases, coral species they infect, number of reported cases, and range over which these diseases are distributed have all increased dramatically in the past 3 decades, posing a serious threat to coral reef ecosystems worldwide. While some published studies provide data on the distribution of coral diseases at local and regional levels, few studies have addressed the factors that may drive these distributions. We recorded coral disease occurrence, prevalence, and severity along with temperature, sedimentation, and coral population data (species abundance and colony size) o

Cryptic effects of habitat declines: coral-associated fishes avoid coral-seaweed interactions due to visual and chemical cues.

Seaweed-dominated coral reefs are becoming increasingly common as environmental conditions shift away from those required by corals and toward those ideal for rampant seaweed growth. How coral-associated organisms respond to seaweed will not only impact their fate following environmental change but potentially also the trajectories of the coral communities on which they rely. However, behavioral responses by coral-associated organisms to seaweeds are poorly understood. This study examined interactions between a guild of obligate and opportunistic coral-feeding butterflyfishes (Chaetodontidae) …

Extreme Environmental Variability Induces Frontloading of Coral Biomineralisation Genes to Maintain Calcification Under pCO2 Variability.

Corals residing in habitats that experience high-frequency seawater pCO2 variability may possess an enhanced capacity to cope with ocean acidification, yet we lack a clear understanding of the molecular toolkit enabling acclimatisation to environmental extremes or how life-long exposure to pCO2 variability influences biomineralisation. Here, we examined the gene expression responses and micro-skeletal characteristics of Pocillopora damicornis originating from the reef flat and reef slope of Heron Island, southern Great Barrier Reef. The reef flat and reef slope had similar mean seawater pCO2,
