Evaluation of eye irritation potential of experimental cosmetic formulations containing glycolic acid, salicylic acid and ethanol using the Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability Assay.

OBJECTIVE: Prototype cosmetic formulations containing short-chain acids and alcohols intended to be applied in the proximity of the eyes are sometimes evaluated for ocular irritation potential using the validated Bovine Corneal Opacity and Permeability Assay (OECD TG 437). We evaluated the eye irritation potential of nine experimental cosmetic formulations designed and prepared by Avon Global Reserach and Development to differ only in the concentrations of Ethanol, Glycolic Acid and Salicylic Acid. METHODS: We analysed the data generated using the BCOP assay. The opacity and permeability valu…

Classifications of anterior segment structure of congenital corneal opacity in infants and toddlers by ultrasound biomicroscopy and slit-lamp microscopic photographs: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: The structural features have an impact on the surgical prognosis for congenital corneal opacity (CCO). The structural classification system of CCO, however, is lacking. Based on data from ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) findings in infants and toddlers with CCO, this research proposed a classification system for the anterior segment structure severity. METHODS: Medical records, preoperative UBM images and slit-lamp photographs of infants and toddlers diagnosed with CCO at University Third Hospital between December 2018 and June 2022 were reviewed. According to the anterior segment …

A new variant neuropathic type of Gaucher's disease characterized by hydrocephalus, corneal opacities, deformed toes, and fibrous thickening of spleen and liver capsules.

We report a new variant type of Gaucher's disease characterized by hydrocephalus, corneal opacities, deformed toes, gastroesophageal reflux, and fibrous thickening of splenic and hepatic capsules. This patient had 1 D409H allele. He differed from other reported cases with a 1342G to C (D409H) homozygous mutation (onset at 4 months, no cardiac involvement until the age of 12 years, and massive hepatosplenomegaly with fibrous thickening of spleen and liver capsules). Enzyme replacement therapy was given for 4 years, resulting in an improvement of visceral and hematologic abnormalities but no neu

Sutureless Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty Using a Bioengineered Cornea as a Viable Alternative to Human Donor Transplantation for Superficial Corneal Opacities.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of a bioengineered corneal implant using femtosecond laser-assisted anterior lamellar keratoplasty for superficial corneal opacities. METHODS: Six eyes of 6 consecutive patients with superficial corneal stromal opacities involving <220 μm owing to various pathologies were included in the study. Preoperatively, all patients underwent anterior segment optical coherence tomography (Visante; Carl Zeiss Meditec AG) to evaluate the depth of the corneal opacity. All patients underwent sutureless femtosecond laser-assisted anterior lamellar keratoplasty us…

A frameshift mutation in the human apolipoprotein A-I gene causes high density lipoprotein deficiency, partial lecithin: cholesterol-acyltransferase deficiency, and corneal opacities.

Epidemiologic data of recent years have identified an important role of HDL deficiency in the etiology of atherosclerosis. Biochemical data suggest that some of these deficiencies may be a consequence of defects in the structural genes of HDL apolipoproteins or of plasma enzymes that modify HDL. We analyzed the genetic defect in a 42-yr-old patient suffering from corneal opacities and complete absence of HDL cholesterol but not of coronary artery disease, thus clinically resembling fish eye disease. The observation of an abnormal immunoblot banding pattern of apolipoprotein A-I (apo A-I) and o

Comparison of in vitro eye irritation potential by bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay to erythema scores in human eye sting test of surfactant-based formulations.

The bovine corneal opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay can be used to predict relative eye irritation potential of surfactant-based personal care formulations relative to a corporate benchmark. The human eye sting test is typically used to evaluate product claims of no tears/no stinging for children's bath products. A preliminary investigation was conducted to test a hypothesis that the BCOP assay could be used as a prediction model for relative ranking of human eye irritation responses under conditions of a standard human eye sting test to surfactant-based formulations. BCOP assays and huma…

Anterior segment optical coherence tomography enables repeat Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty instead of penetrating keratoplasty in a patient with a prominent corneal opacity following DMEK failure: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Persistent corneal edema in eyes with endothelial dysfunction, such as graft failure, may lead to severe corneal opacification obscuring deeper ocular structures. In such cases, penetrating keratoplasty (PKP) has traditionally been preferred over posterior lamellar keratoplasty techniques to remove the edematous and opaque corneal tissue and replace it with a clear full-thickness graft. CASE PRESENTATION: A 48-year-old woman was referred for PKP one year following primary Descemet Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) failure in the left eye. As slit-lamp biomicroscopy showed p

A family of familial hypercholesterolemia with cerebral infarction and without coronary heart disease. An unusual case with corneal opacity, polyneuropathy and carpal tunnel syndrome in the family: therapy with probucol and tocopherol nicotinate.

A study is presented of a 48-year-old female patient and her three siblings with familial hypercholesterolemia. The family members had episodes of cerebral infarction and apparently had atherosclerosis of the internal carotid artery, but no coronary heart disease due to their almost normal level of cholesterol. The laboratory studies of the family members revealed the elevations of serum lipid peroxides, serum lipoprotein(a), leukotriene C4 in blood, the thromboxane B2/6-keto-prostaglandin F1 alpha ratio in plasma and serum hydroxyl radical. Therefore, it is suspected that these factors accele

A novel two nucleotide deletion in the apolipoprotein A-I gene, apoA-I Shinbashi, associated with high density lipoprotein deficiency, corneal opacities, planar xanthomas, and premature coronary artery disease.

Familial HDL deficiency (FHD) is a rare autosomal dominant lipoprotein disorder. We describe a novel genetic variant of the apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) gene resulting in FHD. The proband is a 51-year-old woman who was hospitalized due to severe heart failure. Her plasma HDL-cholesterol (C) and apoA-I concentrations were 0.08mmol/l and 1mg/dl, respectively. She exhibited corneal opacities and planar xanthomas on eyelids and elbows. Coronary angiography demonstrated extensive obstructions in two major vessels. Genomic DNA sequencing of the patient's apoA-I gene revealed a homozygosity for a GC d

Hydrocephalus, corneal opacities, deafness, valvular heart disease, deformed toes and leptomeningeal fibrous thickening in adult siblings: a new syndrome associated with beta-glucocerebrosidase deficiency and a mosaic population of storage cells.

We describe three adult siblings with communicating hydrocephalus, corneal opacities, deafness, valvular heart disease, and deformed toes associated with glucosylceramide (glc-cer)-beta-glucosidase deficiency. The common manifestations of Gaucher disease were not evident. Supranuclear gaze palsies characteristic of type 3 were noted from early childhood, although the major signs were undeveloped until early adult life. Autopsy disclosed thickened leptomeninges with perivascular fibrosis, non-rheumatic calcified aortic and mitral stenosis with marked fibrosis, and mild infiltration of Gaucher c

Evaluating anterior corneal surface using Placido ring mires for irregular astigmatism in refractory corneal subepithelial infiltrates after adenoviral conjunctivitis.

BACKGROUND: Corneal subepithelial infiltrates (SEIs) are characteristic clinical findings of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis (AKC). In eyes with SEIs, both corneal opacity and irregular astigmatism may interfere with vision. However, irregular astigmatism is often overlooked in patients with AKC. Here, we report a case of decreased vision due to irregular corneal surfaces detected by Placido ring mires in eyes with corneal SEIs after AKC. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-year-old girl with decreased vision was referred to our clinic. She had been diagnosed with AKC two years prior by a different physi…

Corneal Copper Deposition Secondary to Monoclonal Gammopathy in a Patient With Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: A Case Report.

Hypercupremia-induced corneal copper deposition secondary to monoclonal gammopathy is rare and shows a characteristic corneal opacity quite different from other causes of hypercupremia, such as Wilson's disease. This report describes a case of corneal copper deposition in a patient with monoclonal gammopathy associated with chronic lymphocytic leukemia. An 84-year-old man with slowly progressive corneal opacity was referred to our hospital. The corneal opacity was present at least five years ago. The patient's best-corrected visual acuity was 20/25 OU (in both eyes) at the initial visit to our…
