Prostaglandin E2 enhances cortical bone mass and activates intracortical bone remodeling in intact and ovariectomized female rats.

To assess the efficacy of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) in augmenting cortical bone mass, graded doses of PGE2 were subcutaneously administered for 30 days to seven-month old sham-ovariectomized (SHAM) and ovariectomized (OVX) rats. Both groups were operated at three months of age. Histomorphometric analyses of double fluorescent labeled tibial shafts were performed on basal control, OVX, and SHAM rats treated with 0, 0.3, 1, 3, and 6 mg PGE2/kg/d for 30 days. Baseline aging data showed increased cortical tissue and cortical bone area and reduced bone formation parameters at the periosteal and endoc

Non-linear explicit micro-FE models accurately predict axial pull-out force of cortical screws in human tibial cortical bone.

Screws are the most frequently used implants for treatment of bone fractures and play an essential role in determining fixation stability. Robust prediction of the bone-screw interface failure would enable development of improved fixation strategies and implant designs, ultimately reducing failure rates and improving outcomes of bone fracture treatments. This study aimed to compare the accuracy of micro-computed tomography image based bone volume measures, linear micro-finite element (FE) and non-linear micro-FE simulations in predicting pull-out force of 3.5 mm screws in human cadaveric tibia

Biomechanical evaluation of a fully cortical-threaded screw for modified cortical bone trajectory fixation: Combined experimental and finite element study.

Although fully cortical-threaded screws are introduced as a design adaptation tailored to the cortical-dominant load path of modified cortical bone trajectory (MCBT) fixation, the biomechanical consequences of this design across the screw-bone interface and fusion construct remain insufficiently defined. Therefore, this study compared fully cortical-threaded MCBT screws with clinically used dual-threaded screws through an integrated experimental and finite element (FE) framework, spanning in vitro ovine vertebral biomechanical test and specimen-specific L4 vertebra and L1-S1 fusion models. Old Blood, Young Bones: Identification of Middle-Aged Myeloid Cells That Limit Cortical Bone Loss.

Although studies support disrupted bone remodelling within geriatric populations, mid-life changes are understudied. To investigate this, we performed bone marrow transplantation assays using either 8- or 40-week-old mice. Micro-CT analyses of lethally irradiated 8-week-old mice transplanted with 40-week-old bone marrow exhibited increased mid-shaft femoral cortical bone mass and thickness. Intensive bone marrow regeneration mirrors hematopoietic development in that erythro-myeloid progenitors (EMPs) first expand to support blood production before definitive hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) produ

A proposal for the combined analysis of bone quantity and quality of human cortical bone by quasi-brittle fracture mechanics.

Quasi-brittle fracture mechanics is used to evaluate fracture of human cortical bone in aging. The approach is demonstrated using cortical bone bars extracted from one 92-year-old human male cadaver. In-situ fracture mechanics experiments in a 3D X-ray microscope are conducted. The evolution of the fracture process zone is documented. Fully developed fracture process zone lengths at peak load are found to span about three osteon diameters. Crack deflection and arrest at cement lines is a key process to build extrinsic toughness. Strength and toughness are found as size-dependent, not only for

In vivo monitoring of bone architecture and remodeling after implant insertion: The different responses of cortical and trabecular bone.

The mechanical integrity of the bone-implant system is maintained by the process of bone remodeling. Specifically, the interplay between bone resorption and bone formation is of paramount importance to fully understand the net changes in bone structure occurring in the peri-implant bone, which are eventually responsible for the mechanical stability of the bone-implant system. Using time-lapsed in vivo micro-computed tomography combined with new composite material implants, we were able to characterize the spatio-temporal changes of bone architecture and bone remodeling following implantation i

Cortical bone thickness and bone depth of the posterior palatal alveolar process for mini-implant insertion in adults.

INTRODUCTION: Cortical bone thickness and bone depth are important factors when placing an orthodontic mini-implant. The objective of this study was to investigate both variables for the palatal alveolar process. METHODS: Thirty dry human skulls were imaged by using cone-beam computed tomography technology. Two-dimensional slices bisecting the posterior interdental sites were generated, and cortical bone thickness and bone depth were measured at 4, 8, and 12 mm from the alveolar crest. Two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyze the measurements. RESULTS: Inter

Detection of high-energy phosphates in cortical bone as an indicator of bone healing and remodelling: use of a rabbit model.

UNLABELLED: PURPOSE; To study high-energy phosphates in cortical bone through experiments on inbred white New Zealand rabbits. METHODS: Tibial fractures were induced in 80 rabbits and then stabilised by screw osteosynthesis. After 3 (group A; n=40) or 7 days (groups B; n=40), the defective tissue was covered by local muscle flaps. At increasing intervals (from 1 to 16 weeks), the screws were removed and the animals were euthanised (n=8 per group). The bone was removed and analysed histomorphologically; adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels were determined by high-performance liquid chromatograp

The Impact of Bone Cement on Bone Healing in Revision Hip Arthroplasty for Periprosthetic Femur Fractures and Cortical Osteotomies.

Background It is widely acknowledged that bone cement may infiltrate the fracture site during the implantation of a cemented hip stem for a periprosthetic fracture, potentially leading to non-union. This study sought to examine this hypothesis through a radiological analysis of patients who underwent cemented femoral stem implantation to stabilize a periprosthetic femur fracture or after a cortical osteotomy for stem extraction. Methodology A retrospective study was conducted from 2015 to 2020 at a specialist center in the United Kingdom. Patients over 18 years old receiving cemented femoral s

Insulin Resistance Is Associated With Smaller Cortical Bone Size in Nondiabetic Men at the Age of Peak Bone Mass.

CONTEXT: In type 2 diabetes mellitus, fracture risk is increased despite preserved areal bone mineral density. Although this apparent paradox may in part be explained by insulin resistance affecting bone structure and/or material properties, few studies have investigated the association between insulin resistance and bone geometry. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to explore this association in a cohort of nondiabetic men at the age of peak bone mass. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Nine hundred ninety-six nondiabetic men aged 25 to 45 years were recruited in a cross-sectional, population-based siblin

Analysis of Transient Cutting Forces in Cortical Bone During Ultrasonically Assisted Cutting.

Ultrasonically assisted cutting (UAC), a process characterized by high-performance material removal and enhanced surface finish, is widely employed in orthopedic surgery. However, variability in the mechanical properties of cortical bone may lead to unstable fractures and fluctuating cutting force during material removal, particularly under high-frequency vibration cutting. This study introduces a transient shear strength model that utilizes strain rate fluctuations to estimate cutting forces in the UAC process. The impact of varying osteon orientations and strain rate ranges on the yield stre

Application of Cortical Bone Trajectory Screw for Treating Thoracolumbar and Lumbar Tuberculosis.

The common form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis is spinal tuberculosis (TB). Spinal TB can lead to vertebral damage, resulting in kyphosis and neurological impairment. Debridement, bone grafting, and reconstruction are common surgical treatments for spinal TB. Spinal TB patients with anterior-middle spinal column destruction are more likely to experience loosening of internal fixation. Cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screw fixation reduces this complication probability because the entrance trajectory of CBT screws in the sagittal and axial planes substantially interacts with the cortical bone an

Biportal endoscopic-assisted cortical bone trajectory screw placement and lumbar interbody fusion.

BACKGROUND: Endoscopically assisted screw fixation with lumbar interbody fusion is rarely performed. We succeeded in implanting the cortical bone trajectory (CBT) screws under the guidance of unilateral biportal endoscopy (UBE). METHOD: We attempted endoscopically assisted screw fixation in a patient with degenerative spondylolisthesis. Through a third portal, ipsilateral CBT screws were implanted without complications. CONCLUSIONS: We successfully performed unilateral biportal endoscopic lumbar interbody fusion (ULIF) with CBT and reversed CBT screws. Compared with percutaneous pedicle scre

Experimental Analysis of Robotic Cortical Bone Specimen Drilling Performance: Effect of Cryogen.

In orthopedic surgery, precise bone screw insertion is crucial for stabilizing fractures, necessitating a preliminary cortical bone drilling procedure. However, this process can induce temperatures exceeding 70 °C due to the low thermal conductivity of cortical bone, potentially leading to thermal osteonecrosis. Furthermore, significant cutting forces and torque pose risks of tool breakage and bone damage, underlining the need for high precision and optimal processing parameters. Traditionally, drilling relies on the surgeon's experience and often results in imprecise outcomes due to inconsist

Multilayer Anterior Skull Base Reconstruction with Cortical Rib Bone Graft: Preliminary Experience.

OBJECTIVE: During the past decades, different methods have been described for anterior skull base reconstruction. Regarding larger skull base defects, few investigators have described the use of bone grafts to foster support and prevent frontal lobe sagging, herniation, or falling. The aim of this study is to describe the use of a rib bone graft, which could be an option in these cases due to its rigidity and dimensions. METHODS: We retrospectively collected preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data at the last follow-up of 10 patients who underwent multilayer anterior skull base r

Cortical and Trabecular Bone Deficit in Middle-Aged Men Living with HIV.

A significant increase in the risk of hip fracture was observed in middle-aged men living with human immunodeficiency virus (MLWH), almost a decade earlier than those without infection. Data regarding cortical and trabecular bone deficit of hip, an important determinant of bone strength, in MLWH are limited. Quantitative CT was performed in consecutive MLWH aged ≥30 years between November 2017 and October 2018 at Severance Hospital, Seoul, Korea. Meta-Learning Analysis of Ultrasonic Guided Waves for Coated Cortical Bone Characterization.

Due to its sensitivity to geometrical and mechanical properties of waveguides, ultrasonic guided waves (UGWs) propagating in cortical bones play an important role in the early diagnosis of osteoporosis. However, as impacts of overlaid soft tissues are complex, it remains challenging to retrieve bone properties accurately. Meta-learning, i.e., learning to learn, is capable of extracting transferable features from a few data and, thus, suitable to capture potential characteristics, leading to accurate bone assessment. In this study, we investigate the feasibility to apply the multichannel identi

Prediction of cross section fracture path of cortical bone through nanoindentation array.

Although great progresses in the fracture mechanisms and deformation behaviors of cortical bones have been achieved, the effective methods to predict the surface fracture path of cortical bones are still difficult. By using depth-sensing nanoindentation measurement technique, the hardness distribution map of cortical bones was obtained through nanoindentation array. Combined with the compressive tests under approximate in vivo environment and micro computed tomography (CT) analysis, the correlation between hardness distribution map and compressive fracture path on the cross section of cortical
