Protocatechuic acid, ferulic acid and relevant defense enzymes correlate closely with walnut resistance to Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis.

BACKGROUND: Juglans regia L. is an important nut tree that has a wide range of distribution in temperate regions of the world. In some walnut orchards, walnut blight can become a problematic disease that affects the growth of walnut trees. To explore the correlation between biochemical response and walnut resistance, we inoculated four walnut cultivars with Xanthomonas arboricola pv. juglandis (Xaj). The walnut cultivars were, namely, 'Xiangling', 'Xiluo 2', 'Yuanfeng' and 'Xifu 2'. Total phenol content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) were measured, whereby nine major phenolic compound

Intestinal Protective Effects of a Pomegranate Peel Extract in In Vitro and Ex Vivo Studies.

Recovery of nutritional and bioactive molecules by pomegranate peel (PP) has found wide applications in food and pharmaceutical industries. We investigated protective effects of a PP extract (PPE) from Mediterranean (Mazara del Vallo, Italy) on intestinal inflammation by using in vitro and ex vivo models. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels, as well as tight junction protein-1 (ZO-1) expression, were determined in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-injured Caco-2 cells treated with PPE. We evaluated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of PPE in isolated colon speci

Evolution Process of Pseudo-lignin Derived from Lignocellulose.

Pseudo-lignin formation severely limits lignocellulose utilization, yet its study is hindered by mixing with unconverted lignocellulosic components. Here, corncob-derived pseudo-lignin was successfully separated for the first time through tetrahydrofuran (THF)/petroleum ether (PE) extraction, providing a basis for the elucidation of the pseudo-lignin formation mechanism. The key intermediate trans-p-coumaric acid (TPCA) from lignin degradation was captured, which plays a crucial role in the formation of pseudo-lignin. In combination with comprehensive characterizations, the reaction network an

Ferulic Acid Induces Autophagy and Apoptosis in Colon Cancer CT26 Cells via the MAPK Pathway.

Ferulic acid (FA) is a bioactive compound found in traditional Chinese herbal medicine; for example, it is present in Xinjiang Ferula, but also in strong-flavor Chinese baijiu. FA has been shown to play a crucial role in treating oxidative stress, skin whitening, and eye diseases. In this study, the potential role of FA as a means of inducing apoptosis and inhibiting colon cancer induced by the transplantation of CT26 cells was investigated. The results show that FA adjuvant treatment caused an upregulation in the expression of genes related to autophagy while simultaneously suppressing the ex

Study the yield and quality of bitter gourd fruit (Momordica charantia) in inoculation with two species of mycorrhizal fungi and phosphorus fertilizer under different irrigation regimes.

Drought is known to be the most important constraint to the growth and yield of agricultural products in the world, and plant symbiosis with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can be a way to reduce drought stress negative impacts. A two-year experiment to investigate the factorial combination of mycorrhizal fungi (Glomus mosseae, Glomus intraradices, Control) and phosphorus fertilizer (application and non-application of phosphorus) on fruit yield and phenolic acids changes bitter gourd under different irrigation regimes as a split factorial based on a randomized complete block design. Identification of enzymes from genus Trichoderma that can accelerate formation of ferulic acid and ethyl ferulate in collaboration with rice koji enzyme in sake mash.

The enzymes responsible for acceleration of ferulic acid and ethyl ferulate formation in sake mash were studied. Ferulic acid and ethyl ferulate are formed during the sake brewing process from feruloylated glucuronoarabinoxylan. Cellulase reagent from genus Trichoderma was used instead of rice koji, because rice koji for sake brewing produces extremely low levels of xylan-degrading enzymes. A combination of the reagent with rice koji enzymes accelerated the formation of ferulic acid from α-rice powder. Addition of the reagent to sake mash increased ferulic acid and ethyl ferulate formation. Th

Antioxidant and metabolic responses of Linum album cell culture to polyethylene glycol-induced drought stress.

Owing to drought stress disruptions, the physiological and biochemical homeostasis required for the plants’ growth and productivity is severely compromised. Here, we studied the adaptive mechanisms of Linum album cells exposed to drought stress. Thus, changes in the redox state, primary metabolites, and secondary metabolites were considered responding to various concentrations of polyethylene glycol (PEG) (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10%). Our observations revealed that treatment with PEG could lower fresh weight and water contents while increasing dry weight, pointing to the osmotic adjustment under

Phenolic acids as chemotaxonomic markers able to differentiate the Euphrasia species.

The objective of this study was to get the answer on the question, which phenolic compounds may serve as chemical markers in taxonomy of Euphrasia spp. (E. nemorosa, E. rostkoviana, E. stricta) collected from the wild. Moreover, it is still unknown how and which environmental parameters can impact on the quantity of polyphenols, flavonoids and phenolic acids. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study that analyses such a broad spectrum of phenolic compounds in the genus Euphrasia and takes into account the habitat conditions of their synthesis. The species of Euphrasia differ signific

Hepatocyte specific expression of an oncogenic variant of β-catenin results in cholestatic liver disease.

Toxic stress caused by autotoxins is a common phenomenon for cucumber under monoculture condition. A previous study demonstrated that grafting could enhance the resistance of cucumber to cinnamic acid (CA) stress, but the underlying mechanism behind this enhanced resistance is still unclear. In the present study, we reconfirmed the stronger resistance of grafted rootstock (RG) compared to the non-grafted (NG) cucumber as measured though plant biomass accumulation. In addition, we focused on the phenolic and other aromatic acids metabolism in hydroponic culture model system using a combination
