AIM: To identify the causes of blindness and to launch preventive actions to reduce the prevalence of blindness in Croatia.
METHODS: In February 2005, data on 25% of the blind population in Croatia including associations of the blind in the City of Zagreb, Koprivnica-Krizevci County and Medimurje County were analyzed.

We reconstructed the historical development of surgical approaches to the pituitary gland, which were used in Croatia in the first half of the 20th century, on the basis of earliest clinical case reports and descriptions of initial surgical attempts. Endemic nephropathy (EN) is a renal disease of unknown etiology. In Croatia it occurs in the rural population in 14 villages located in the western part of Brodsko-Posavska county. This region also has an unusually high incidence of otherwise rare upper urothelial cancers. Between 1991 and 2002 the average general mortality for both sexes in the endemic region was 10.3 per thousand and the specific mortality for patients with EN was 0.65 per thousand (M 0.58/10((3)), F 0.72/10(3)). The prevalence of rheumatoid factor (RF) in urban population was examined. A random sample was taken according to the register of voters and included 5% of the population. Among them 60% suffered from various rheumatic symptoms. Out of 500 persons invited to an examination, 231 examinees responded. None of the examinees in that moment showed signs of rheumatoid arthritis. Small mammals trapped in seven sites along the river Sava in Croatia were examined for leptospiral infection by renoculture and serological methods. Of the 1749 animals caught 702 were examined by renoculture method and 626 were tested by microagglutination-lysis. West Nile Virus (WNV) has been circulating in Croatia for over a decade, as well as in numerous countries across the Mediterranean Basin and Central Europe. Using high-throughput Illumina sequencing, we successfully sequenced the WNV genome from serum and urine samples of three Croatian patients infected in 2016, 2023 and 2024. PURPOSE: The Fifth Croatia Stuttering Symposium in 2022 continued the Fourth Croatia Stuttering Symposium 2019 theme of the connection between research and clinical practice. At the 2022 Symposium, there were 145 delegates from 21 countries. This paper documents the contents of the first of three Symposium modules.

This study examined the frequency of dermatophytoses in the Primorsko-Goranska County, a north-western part of Croatia, over a period of 21 years (1988-2008). All fungal samples were microscopically examined with 20% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution. Fungal infections were confirmed in 26.9% cases. Out of these, dermatophytes were isolated in 38.3%, Candida spp. infection in 55.1% cases, while non-dermatophyte molds were identified in 6.6% isolates. Osteological changes consistent with neurogenic paralysis were observed in one male and one female skeleton recovered from two Croatian medieval sites - Virje and Zadar. Both skeletons display limb asymmetry typical of neurogenic paralysis that occurs during the childhood. The male skeleton displays atrophy and shortening of the right arm and the right femur, while the female skeleton exhibits identical changes on the right arm and both legs. The analysis of 16th century graves from Zagreb, Croatia, revealed a case of frontal sinus osteoma in a middle-aged female. BACKGROUND: Enterovirus-D68 (EV-D68) was long underreported, with only sporadic cases of respiratory disease worldwide until 2014, when numerous countries experienced significant outbreaks of EV-D68. In Croatia, sporadic detections have primarily resulted from an absence of systematic surveillance. The Testicular Tissue Bank has been operating at the University Hospital Center (UHC) Zagreb since 2013. It aims to cryopreserve testicular tissue from patients with azoospermia. If spermatozoa are found in the collected tissue, a combined procedure known as testicular sperm extraction (TESE)/intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is performed.
