The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to examine whether long-term participation in recreational gymnastics or folk dancing or estrogen replacement therapy (ERT) is associated with mechanically more competent bones and improved muscular strength and body balance. One hundred and seventeen healthy, female postmenopausal recreational gymnasts (mean age 62.1 [SD 4.7] years) and 116 sedentary controls (mean age 61.5 [4.6] years) were enrolled in the study. Bone mineral content (BMC) of the distal radius, femoral neck, and trochanter were measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. BMC

Os trigonum syndrome is the result of an overuse injury of the posterior ankle caused by repetitive plantar flexion stress. It is predominantly seen in ballet dancers and soccer players and is primarily a clinical diagnosis of exacerbated posterior ankle pain while dancing on pointe or demi-pointe or while doing push-off maneuvers. Symptoms may improve with rest or activity modification. Imaging studies, including a lateral radiographic view of the ankle in maximal plantar flexion, will typically reveal the os trigonum between the posterior tibial lip and calcaneus. If an os trigonum is absent

Parkinson's disease (PD) involves progressive basal ganglia dysfunction, with hyperexcitability of striatal indirect-pathway D2 medium spiny neurons (D2-MSNs) linked to motor impairment. Neuromotor rehabilitation is an important therapy, but its efficacy varies across interventions. This thematic review examines eleven rehabilitative strategies for PD, spanning forced and voluntary exercise (FE and VE respectively), non-invasive brain stimulation (rTMS, tDCS), and technology-based approaches such as exoskeletons, augmented reality, and dual-task training, within a framework distinguishing stri

The aim of this article is to offer insight into the different meanings of death that pierce the lives of people with disabilities and to discuss how those meanings are formed through a close connection with their bodies. To do that, I take an anthropological approach to trace the life paths of two individuals from a southern Latin American metropolis, exploring their embodied experiences of disability. Based on their accounts, I look at how their bodies are affected by specific conditions of stigma, dispossession, and social death, but also how, as "inappropriate/d" bodies, they rise above th

Functional ankle instability (FAI) is a common condition following ankle injury characterised by increased risk of injury. Ankle sprains are a common acute form of injury suffered in dancing and loss of balance can affect not only risk of injury risk but also performance aesthetics. Whole body vibration training (WBVT) is a new rehabilitation method that has been linked with improving balance and muscle function. 38 female dancers with self reported unilateral FAI were randomly assigned in 2 groups: WBVT and control. Absolute centre of mass (COM) distribution during single leg stance, SEBT nor

Dancers commonly suffer from low back pain. This is often associated with the extreme lumbar extension range of motion and prolonged lordotic postures required by some dance forms. There is ample literature documenting extension-related instabilities such as spondylolisthesis in dancers. The aim of this article is to review the changes in motor control that occur in patients with subtle clinical instability and recurrent low back pain. Recent studies have consistently demonstrated changes in neuromuscular function in patients with back pain, and spinal stability retraining has become a popular

Microinstability, characterized by subtle and often painful disturbances in joint stability, significantly impacts individuals engaged in activities requiring extensive ranges of motion, such as dancing or gymnastics, and is particularly prevalent in young female athletes. This condition, resulting from progressive microtrauma, architectural and functional abnormalities, or iatrogenic factors, is challenging to diagnose and often underreported. Understanding the biomechanical nuances of microinstability is essential for accurate diagnosis and effective management. Upper limb joints, including

Huntington's disease is a late-onset autosomal dominant inherited neurodegenerative disease characterised by increased symptom severity over time and ultimately premature death. An expanded CAG repeat sequence in the huntingtin gene leads to a polyglutamine expansion in the expressed protein, resulting in complex dysfunctions including cellular excitotoxicity and transcriptional dysregulation. Symptoms include cognitive deficits, psychiatric changes and a movement disorder often referred to as Huntington's chorea, which involves characteristic involuntary dance-like writhing movements. Neuropa

Dance medicine is a subdivision of sports medicine that utilizes the same basic orthopedic concepts. It studies motions common to dance, which may not be common to other athletic activity, and the injuries that develop secondary to these peculiar movements. The best defense mechanism against injury and overuse syndrome development is a well-toned, strong, flexible body. Appropriate alignment and range of motion of large joints are necessities for dance activity. Biomechanical analyses are useful in treating and guiding the dancer through injuries that she may incur as well as prevention of suc

BACKGROUND: Arts-based interventions are increasingly employed to alleviate anxiety and depression among college students; however, their re … usic therapy ranked highest (SUCRA = 82.4%), followed by cognitive-behavioral therapy combined with dance therapy (SUCRA = 79.8%). No evidence of publication bias was detected (Egger's p > 0.05), and the node-splitting analysis revealed no significant inconsistency across comparisons.
CONCLUSIONS: Among arts-based interventions for college students, integratin …

An art therapist conducted a survey of 150 mental health clinicians and activity therapists to find which of ten treatment modalities they preferred to use with ten types of psychiatric patients. The final sample consisted of 68 respondents: 34 clinicians, 17 activity therapists, and 17 art therapists. The three respondent groups agreed on the same optimum treatment modality for five patient groups. Art therapists felt art therapy was most effective in treating the youthful drug abuser, the child with educational problems, and the moderately depressed patient. Clinicians and activity therapist

This article introduces the Somatic Codification Hypothesis (SCH), a theoretical framework that models the karaṇa system of the Nāṭyaśāstra-the foundational Sanskrit treatise on performance-as a systematic codification of pre-reflective, stimulus-driven bodily responses, alongside, rather than in place of, its established expressive, devotional, and aesthetic readings. The claim advanced here is epistemic and functional, not ontological: I do not argue that the body generates culture, nor that historical practitioners worked outward from physiology to notation. Rather, I argue that treating th

Rehabilitation is considered as an adjuvant to pharmacological and surgical treatments for Parkinson's disease (PD) to maximize functional ability and minimize secondary complications. Originally, approaches were based on empirical experience, but growing evidence suggests that exercise-dependent plasticity constitutes the main mechanism underlying the effects of physiotherapy. Exercise increases synaptic strength and influences neurotransmission, thus potentiating functional circuitry in PD. In addition, exercise is a pivotal element of motor learning. PD patients retain a sufficient capacity

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Exercise is a recommended non-pharmacological approach to treat multiple sclerosis (MS) symptoms. Mind-body movement interventions (MBMIs) offer a multi-component exercise option that integrates movement, breathwork, and mindfulness. Using an umbrella review, we assessed the current best evidence on MBMIs (ai chi, dance, Pilates, qigong, tai chi, and yoga) for managing MS symptoms.
RECENT FINDINGS: MBMIs significantly improved balance, equal to or superior to active controls (AC) or usual care (UC). Ai chi/tai chi/qigong significantly improved depression. Analyzed with othe

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease associated with deficits in motor, cognitive, and emotion/quality of life (QOL) domains, yet most pharmacologic and behavioral interventions focus only on motor function. Our goal was to perform a pilot study of Dance for Parkinson's-a community-based program that is growing in popularity-in order to compare effect sizes across multiple outcomes and to inform selection of primary and secondary outcomes for a larger trial. Study participants were people with PD who self-enrolled in either Dance for Parkinson's classes (interven

Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) is a rare adrenergically mediated arrhythmogenic disorder classically induced by exercise or emotional stress and found in structurally normal hearts. It is an important cause of cardiac syncope and sudden death in childhood. Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia is a genetic cardiac channelopathy with known mutations involving genes affecting intracellular calcium regulation. We present a case of a 14-year-old boy who had cardiopulmonary arrest after an emotionally induced episode of CPVT while attempting to invite a
