Medical Image Classification Based on Semi-Supervised Generative Adversarial Network and Pseudo-Labelling.

Deep learning has substantially improved the state-of-the-art in object detection and image classification. Deep learning usually requires large-scale labelled datasets to train the models; however, due to the restrictions in medical data sharing and accessibility and the expensive labelling cost, the application of deep learning in medical image classification has been dramatically hindered. In this study, we propose a novel method that leverages semi-supervised adversarial learning and pseudo-labelling to incorporate the unlabelled images in model learning. We validate the proposed method on

A content-based image retrieval system for the diagnosis of lymphoma using blood micrographs: An incorporation of deep learning with a traditional learning approach.

Lymphomas, or cancers of the lymphatic system, account for around half of all blood cancers diagnosed each year. Lymphoma is a condition that is difficult to diagnose, and accurate diagnosis is critical for effective treatment. Manual microscopic analysis of blood cells requires the involvement of medical experts, whose precision is dependent on their abilities, and it takes time. This paper describes a content-based image retrieval system that uses deep learning-based feature extraction and a traditional learning method for feature reduction to retrieve similar images from a database to aid e

Diffeomorphic transforms for data augmentation of highly variable shape and texture objects.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Training a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) for automatic image classification requires a large database with images of labeled samples. However, in some applications such as biology and medicine only a few experts can correctly categorize each sample. Experts are able to identify small changes in shape and texture which go unnoticed by untrained people, as well as distinguish between objects in the same class that present drastically different shapes and textures. This means that currently available databases are too small and not suitable to train deep learni

The association between gun shows and firearm injuries: An analysis of 259 gun shows across 23 US cities.

Guns shows are estimated to account for 4-9% of firearm sales in the US. Increased regulation of firearm sales at gun shows has been proposed as one approach to reducing firearm injury rates. This study evaluated the association between gun shows and local firearm injury rates. Data regarding the date and location of gun shows from 2017 to 2019 were abstracted from the Big Show Journal. Firearm injury rates were estimated using discharges from trauma centers serving counties within a 25-mile radius of each gun show. Clinical data were derived from the National Trauma Databank (NTDB). We used P

The use of categorical regression in the assessment of the risks of nutrient deficiency and excess.

Exposure-response assessment methods have shifted towards more quantitative approaches, with health risk assessors exploring more statistically driven techniques. These assessments, however, usually rely on one critical health effect from a single key study. Categorical regression addresses this limitation by incorporating data from all relevant studies – including human, animal, and mechanistic studies – thereby including a broad spectrum of health endpoints and exposure levels for exposure-response analysis in an objective manner. Categorical regression requires the establishment of ordered

Criminal arrests associated with reduced regional brain volumes in an adult population with documented childhood lead exposure.

Childhood lead exposure interferes with brain maturation, which adversely impacts cognitive and behavioral development. Lower intelligence scores, impairments in decision making, and increased rates of delinquent and criminal behavior are adverse outcomes linked to childhood lead absorption. The present study examined the relationships between childhood blood lead concentrations, structural brain volume, and measures of adult criminality. We hypothesized that increased rates of criminal arrests in adulthood would be inversely correlated with regional gray and white matter volumes, especially p
