Regional seroprevalence of leptospirosis on deer farms in New Zealand.

AIM: To undertake a seroprevalence survey to estimate the distribution of infection by Leptospira spp. serovars Hardjobovis, Pomona and Copenhageni in farmed deer herds regionally throughout New Zealand. METHODS: Between March 2003 and February 2005, 111 red and red x wapiti deer herds not using a leptospiral vaccine were selected from nine regions from Northland to Southland. Eighty-three herds were selected for on-farm collection of 12-20 blood samples from hinds predominantly 9-30 months of age, by jugular venepuncture, while similar numbers, predominantly males 9-30 months of age, per far…

Prions in skeletal muscles of deer with chronic wasting disease.

The emergence of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer and elk in an increasingly wide geographic area, as well as the interspecies transmission of bovine spongiform encephalopathy to humans in the form of variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease, have raised concerns about the zoonotic potential of CWD. Because meat consumption is the most likely means of exposure, it is important to determine whether skeletal muscle of diseased cervids contains prion infectivity. Here bioassays in transgenic mice expressing cervid prion protein revealed the presence of infectious prions in skeletal muscles of CWD-i…

Chronic wasting disease in deer and elk in North America.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) has emerged as an important disease of wildlife in North America. The disease is a unique member of the transm … still limited, has greatly improved since the mid-1990s as a result of surveillance in free-ranging deer and elk and in commercially owned Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni), and the disease has now been found in multiple areas of the plains and Rocky Mountain foothills of western North America. Studies of the biology and natural history of CW …

Anatomy of deer spine and its comparison to the human spine.

The anatomical parameters of the thoracic and lumbar regions of the deer spine were evaluated and compared with the existing data of the human spine. The objective was to create a database for the anatomical parameters of the deer spine, with a view to establish deer spine as a valid model for human spine biomechanical experiments in vitro. To date, the literature has supported the use of both calf and sheep spines as a suitable model for human spine experiments as the difficulty in procuring the human cadaveric spines is well appreciated. With the advent of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (B…

Ultrastructure of the cyst wall of Sarcocystis sp. in roe deer.

Samples of heart, tongue, oesophagus and diaphragm muscle from twenty-two naturally infected roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) harvested in central Italy were examined for sarcosporidiasis. The structure of Sarcocystis spp. muscle cysts was examined by light and electron microscopy. Only one type of thin-walled cyst was distinguished by light microscopy. Electron microscopy showed cysts having a thin highly folded primary cyst wall, without fibrillar material, that formed thin hair-like protrusions often having a T-form, especially close to host cell mithocondria. The cysts appeared to belong to …

White-tailed deer as a potential reservoir of Ehrlichia spp.

We determined the antibody prevalence to Ehrlichia spp., in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the geographic distribution of seropositive animals in 84 counties in Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia (USA). Using an indirect fluorescent antibody test we detected antibodies (> or = 1:128) to this bacterium in 544 (43%) of 1269 deer. Presence of antibodies to Ehrlichia spp. was related to a southerly latitude, low elevation, an…

Mycobacterium bovis infection in a captive herd of Sika deer.

Infection with Mycobacterium bovis was diagnosed in a small privately owned herd of Sika deer. After postmortem examination of a deer with progressive pulmonary disease, diagnosis of infection with M bovis was confirmed by bacteriologic culture. The 2 remaining deer in this herd were euthanatized, necropsied, and confirmed to be infected with M bovis. Three cats in contact with the deer were also euthanatized and necropsied. One of these cats had lesions suggestive of mycobacterial infection in the colon and mesenteric lymph nodes. Infection of this cat with M bovis was not confirmed by bacter…

Diarrhea in young red deer associated with infection with Cryptosporidium.

In an outbreak of diarrhea among 82 artificially reared red deer calves, 56 developed the disease and 20 subsequently died. During the outbreak 80% of diarrheal and 50% of apparently healthy calves excreted cryptosporidial oocysts in feces. The coincidence of infection with Crytosporidium and clinical diarrhea suggested a causal relationship. Histologic examination of intestinal sections from a necropsied deer calf showed lesions consistent with field and experimental cryptosporidiosis in other species. The deer Cryptosporidium subclinically infected newborn mice; in indirect immunofluorescenc…

The use of deer vehicle accidents as a proxy for measuring the degree of interaction between human and deer populations and its correlation with the incidence rate of Lyme disease.

The study described in this article examined the relationship between the incidence rate of deer vehicle accidents (DVAs), a proxy for measuring the interaction between populations of humans and deer, and human Lyme disease incidence rate. The authors also examined the relationship between deer population density and human Lyme incidence rate. They analyzed data from Connecticut's Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Public Health from 1999 through 2008 by deer management zone (DMZ) and town. For DVA incidence rate versus Lyme incidence rate for both DMZs and towns, mos…

Immunolocalization of scrapie amyloid (PrP27-30) in chronic wasting disease of Rocky Mountain elk and hybrids of captive mule deer and white-tailed deer.

Scrapie amyloid-immunoreactive plaques are present in brain tissues of captive mule deer with chronic wasting disease (CWD), a progressive neurological disorder characterized neuropathologically by widespread spongiform change of the neuropil, intracytoplasmic vacuolation in neuronal perikarya and astrocytic hypertrophy and hyperplasia. We report here the immunolocalization of scrapie amyloid (PrP27-30) in plaques observed in brain tissues of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus elaphus nelsoni) and hybrids of mule deer and white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) naturally affected with CWD. Similar …

Detection of tick-borne pathogens in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus), in questing ticks (Ixodes ricinus), and in ticks infesting roe deer in southern Germany.

The hard tick Ixodes ricinus is the most common tick in Central Europe and plays an important role as a vector of several pathogens. In the complex life cycles of these pathogens, the role of wild animals as natural reservoirs has been discussed. The aims of this study were to investigate the role of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) as a potential reservoir host for Babesia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, and Rickettsia spp. Therefore, we explored the differences in the infection rates of roe deer and engorged and questing ticks with these pathogens from a single forest site with special attent…

Skin microbiota of fallow deer: Composition, diversity, and influencing factors.

Understanding the microbiota of wild animals can contribute to the monitoring of population health or habitat changes. The skin microbiota of fallow deer remains poorly characterized and represents a gap in current veterinary microbiology research. The aim of this study was to analyse skin microbiota of fifteen clinically healthy fallow deer using next-generation sequencing. Genomic DNA was extracted from superficial skin swabs collected from three anatomical sites per individual (n = 45 samples) and sequenced targeting the V3-V4 region of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene using Illumina sequencing.…

Red Deer (Cervus elaphus) Fascioloidosis: From Liver Pathology to Regeneration.

Fascioloidosis is a parasitic disease caused by allochthonous parasite Fascioloides magna. In Europe, three types of final hosts are recognised: definitive, aberrant, and dead end. Several countries have launched disease control programmes using medicated feed, with different drugs, to control F. magna infections. In this study, we used corn treated with Albix® 10 in a total dose of 60 mg/kg of body weight for five consecutive days (12 mg/kg per day). Following successful treatment, a destroyed pseudocyst with different amounts of degrading material and decaying flukes was detected. A total of

Mechanical properties of farmed fallow deer antlers depending on age.

BACKGROUND: Antlers are unique bones and are very characteristic secondary sexual organs of cervids males. Rapid growth of its can cause physiological exhaustion and seasonal osteoporosis. Antlers develop with the age of the male, which is also related to his physiological and psychological ability to reproduce. Males of fallow deer reaches sexual maturity in its second year of life, only males over 5 years of age usually participate in reproduction, but most often stags aged 7 years and older. For this reason, the aim of the study was to analyze the mechanical properties of antlers of farmed …

Development of the Roe Deer-Fascioloides magna Association over Time.

The trematode Fascioloides magna is originally a parasite of North American deer species. Upon its arrival to Europe, F. magna met new intermediate and final hosts. Depending on the type of host, the clinical picture, pathological findings, epidemiology and outcome can vary significantly. As an aberrant host, it was long believed that the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) fails to develop pseudocysts, and therefore the infected animal dies before the parasite can mature and start to produce eggs. In this study, 676 roe deer livers were collected in Croatia during the hunting years of four consecu…

Fasciola hepatica infection in Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus).

Fasciola hepatica is a species of zoonotic liver flukes with a broad range of definitive hosts worldwide. However, this liver fluke has not been detected in Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus). This study provides the first evidence for Korean water deer being a definitive host of F. hepatica.
