Effect of dehydration on the healing of experimental corneal ulcer.

A 10% solution of glycerol was used for dehydration of the cornea in the course of its experimental ulcer in 24 rabbits. Biomicroscopical, pathological and histochemical observations were carried out. It was shown that dehydration favorably influences the course of healing of corneal ulcer. An earlier return by the reaction for corneal acid mucopolysaccharides with a control cornea was also observed after application of glycerol.

An unusual case of severe hypercalcemia: as dehydrated as a bone.

Objective: Severe hypercalcemia is a medical emergency. Hyperparathyroidism, malignancy, vitamin D toxicity, infections such as tuberculosis, or systemic illness such as sarcoidosis are all possible etiologies. Among the less studied causes is dehydration. Our objective is to identify dehydration as an etiology of hypercalcemia. Methods: Extensive literature review did not recognize dehydration as an etiology of hypercalcemia. We present a case of dehydration leading to severe hypercalcemia in a 60-years-old female with a presentation of altered mental status and corrected calcium level of 19 …

Kinetics of Ringer's Solution in Extracellular Dehydration and Hemorrhage.

BACKGROUND: Ringer's solution might be used to treat volume depletion (extracellular dehydration) and hemorrhage, but there is no integrated view of how these fluid balance disorders influence the kinetics of the infused volume. METHODS: Acute dehydration (mean 1.7 L) was induced by repeated doses of furosemide (5 mg) in 10 healthy male volunteers, and 0.5 L and 0.9 L of blood was withdrawn in random order on different occasions in another 10 male volunteers, just before administration of Ringer's acetate solution. Infusions performed in the normovolemic state served as controls. Measurements…

[From chondrocalcinosis to rheumatism with calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate].

Calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate (CPPD) crystal deposition disease is a joint pathology that affects joints, fibrocartilages and periarticular structures. Chondrocalcinosis refers to CPPD deposits on the X-ray that does not summarize the disease. It willingly affects the knees and the wrists, but all the joints can be affected. There are primitive and secondary forms of the disease to particularly look for in patients less than 50 years. The diagnosis is usually easy with standard radiography, ultrasound and synovial fluid analysis that shows the microcrystals. The therapeutics of the acute att

[A case of hypernatremic dehydration due to breast-feeding].

The authors report an 11-day-old exclusively breast-fed female, with a birth weight of 3 300 g, who had suffered from dehydration stage I, with acute renal failure and metabolic acidosis, with 170 mmol/L of serum sodium. Renal ultrasounds were normal but the rate of sodium in mother's milk was three times higher than controls (87 versus 21 mmol/L). Intravenous rehydration allowed the correction of hydroelectrolytic disorders.

Heat exhaustion and dehydration as causes of marathon collapse.

This article reviews causes of marathon collapse related to physical exhaustion, heat exhaustion and dehydration. During severe exercise-heat stress (high skin and core temperatures), cardiac output can decrease below levels observed during exercise in temperate conditions. This reduced cardiac output and vasodilated skin and muscle can make it difficult to sustain blood pressure and perhaps cerebral blood flow. Dehydration can accentuate this cardiovascular strain. In contrast, excessive heat loss to the environment during cold weather may result in hypothermic collapse. Other factors contrib…

Effects of dehydration on isometric muscular strength and endurance.

To examine the effects of rapid dehydration on isometric muscular strength and endurance, seven men were tested at baseline (control) and after a dehydration (dHST) and a euhydration (eHST) heat stress trial. The dHST consisted of intermittent sauna exposure until 4% of body mass was lost, whereas the eHST consisted of intermittent sauna exposure (same duration as dHST) with water replacement. Peak torque was determined for the knee extensors and elbow flexors during three isometric maximal voluntary contractions. Time to fatigue was determined by holding a maximal voluntary contraction until …

How valid are clinical signs of dehydration in infants?

Our objective was to determine the ability of several clinical signs of dehydration to distinguish among degrees of dehydration in infants with acute diarrhea. The design was a prospective cohort study in a pediatric referral hospital in Cairo, Egypt. Infant boys, 3-18 months old, with a history of acute diarrhea (5 or more watery stools per day for no more than 7 days) were eligible, except those with frank protein-energy malnutrition, serious nongastrointestinal illness, or being exclusively breast-fed. Several clinical signs of dehydration were assessed upon study entry. Subjects were then …

A prospective clinical study of patients with hypernatraemic dehydration.

In a clinical prospective 3-year study of 158 children aged 2 weeks to 14 years with hypernatraemic dehydration (serum sodium 150 mmol/l or more), infants predominated (61.4%). The 158 children with hypernatraemia accounted for 13.7% of all children admitted with gastroenteritis over the same period, and significant aetiological factors included the use of artificial feeds, differences between the children with hypernatraemia and those with normo- or hyponatraemia, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively; the use of breast milk, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively; nutritional status, P < 0.001, P <…

Modern management of acute diarrhea and dehydration in children.

Advances in clinical and laboratory knowledge have led to new concepts in the management of acute infectious diarrhea in children. The major advance has been the development of oral rehydration therapy, which is effective for the treatment of diarrhea of any etiology in patients of any age. Optimal management of acute infectious diarrhea includes the following: (1) rapid rehydration (and maintenance of hydration) using an appropriate glucose-based or cereal-based oral rehydration solution; (2) early refeeding with a mixed diet and no interruption of breast feeding; (3) continuation of lactose-

Hypernatraemic dehydration in the Hail region of Saudi Arabia.

Infants presenting with hypernatraemic dehydration were studied prospectively in order to describe its incidence and the predisposing factors. Five hundred and twenty children with gastroenteritis were admitted to the Paediatric Unit of Hail General Hospital over a 1-year period from 1 June 1985 to 1 June 1986. Twenty-five children (4.8%) had hypernatraemia (Na+ greater than 150 mmol/l) and all 25 were under 1 year of age, 23 (92%) being under 6 months. Twenty (80%) came from families living in the villages and had a poor educational background. All the babies were bottle-fed. The majority of …
