Dynamic changes in phase-amplitude coupling facilitate spatial attention control in fronto-parietal cortex.

Attention is a core cognitive mechanism that allows the brain to allocate limited resources depending on current task demands. A number of frontal and posterior parietal cortical areas, referred to collectively as the fronto-parietal attentional control network, are engaged during attentional allocation in both humans and non-human primates. Numerous studies have examined this network in the human brain using various neuroimaging and scalp electrophysiological techniques. However, little is known about how these frontal and parietal areas interact dynamically to produce behavior on a fine temp

Elevated delta power in a maternal UBE3A-deletion pig model of Angelman syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Angelman syndrome is a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by loss of the maternally inherited UBE3A allele and characterized by severe cognitive, motor, and communication impairments. Increased delta (1-4 Hz) activity on electroencephalogram (EEG) is a well-established biomarker of Angelman syndrome in humans and rodent models and is increasingly used as a quantitative outcome measure in therapeutic studies. Whether this electrophysiological phenotype is present in the recently developed pig model has not been evaluated. METHODS: Scalp EEG recordings were obtained from freely movi

Clinical Correlates of Frontal Intermittent Rhythmic Delta Activity Without Structural Brain Lesion.

Frontal intermittent rhythmic delta activity (FIRDA), rhythmic slow wave pattern lasting several seconds over the anterior leads of electroencephalography (EEG), has been reported in a wide variety of clinical conditions. We investigated the clinical significance of FIRDA without structural brain lesions. We reviewed 7689 EEGs between October 2017 and September 2019 at a university hospital. Patients (age >18 years) who were confirmed to have "nonsignificant neuroimaging" were examined. Clinical data were retrospectively collected, and the estimated cause was carefully decided. We found 83 FIR

Event-related oscillations in offspring of alcoholics: neurocognitive disinhibition as a risk for alcoholism.

BACKGROUND: Event-related oscillations (EROs) are increasingly being used to assess neurocognitive functioning in normal and clinical populations. The current study compares different frequency activities in offspring of alcoholics (OA) and in normal control subjects (NC) to examine whether the OA group exhibits any abnormality in oscillatory activity while performing a Go/NoGo task. METHODS: The S-transform algorithm was employed to decompose the electroencephalographic (EEG) signals into different time-frequency bands, and the oscillatory responses in the P300 time window (300-700 milliseco

Non-invasive blood pressure monitoring with an oscillometric brachial cuff: impact of arrhythmia.

Arrhythmia-induced beat-to-beat variability of blood pressure (BP) is deemed to hinder the reliability of non-invasive oscillometric measurements (NIBP) but few data support this belief. We assessed the impact of arrhythmia on a NIBP device never tested for this purpose. We compared, in intensive care unit patients with and without arrhythmia, the agreement between three pairs of NIBP (Infinity™ Delta monitor, Dräger medical systems) and invasive readings. For systolic, diastolic and mean BP, the mean bias between NIBP and invasive measurements was not higher, in 89 patients with arrhythmia, t

Brain electrical source differences between depressed subjects and healthy controls.

Many brain regions show metabolic and perfusion abnormalities in major depressive disorder (MDD), including anterior cingulate and prefrontal cortices. Some of these same areas also show abnormal function with low resolution electromagnetic tomography (LORETA). However, LORETA results are not always consistent across studies, nor with findings from other imaging modalities. These discrepancies may be due, among other factors, to the sensitivity of EEG source localization to different electrode montages. Thirty-six channel EEG was collected from healthy controls and age- and gender-matched unme

Measures of resting state EEG rhythms for clinical trials in Alzheimer's disease: Recommendations of an expert panel.

The Electrophysiology Professional Interest Area (EPIA) and Global Brain Consortium endorsed recommendations on candidate electroencephalography (EEG) measures for Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. The Panel reviewed the field literature. As most consistent findings, AD patients with mild cognitive impairment and dementia showed abnormalities in peak frequency, power, and "interrelatedness" at posterior alpha (8-12 Hz) and widespread delta (< 4 Hz) and theta (4-8 Hz) rhythms in relation to disease progression and interventions. The following consensus statements were subscribed: (1) St

Functional mapping to reveal slow conduction and substrate progression in atrial fibrillation.

AIMS: The aim of our study was to analyse the response to short-coupled atrial extrastimuli to identify areas of hidden slow conduction (HSC) and their relationship with the atrial fibrillation (AF) phenotype. METHODS AND RESULTS: Twenty consecutive patients with paroxysmal AF and persistent AF (10:10) underwent the first pulmonary vein isolation procedure. Triple short-coupled extrastimuli were delivered in sinus rhythm (SR), and the evoked response was analysed: sites exhibiting double or highly fragmented electrograms (EGM) were defined as positive for HSC (HSC+). The delta of the duration

The significance of the sympathetic nervous system in the pathophysiology of periodic leg movements in sleep.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Periodic leg movements in sleep (PLMS) are frequently accompanied by arousals and autonomic activation, but the pathophysiologic significance of these manifestations is unclear. DESIGN: Changes in heart rate variability (HRV), HRV spectra, and electroencephalogram (EEG) spectra associated with idiopathic PLMS were compared with changes associated with isolated leg movements and respiratory-related leg movements during sleep. Furthermore, correlations between electromyographic activity, HRV changes, and EEG changes were assessed. SETTING: Sleep laboratory. PATIENTS: Whole-n

Correlations between cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers, neurocognitive tests, and resting-state electroencephalography (rsEEG) in patients with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders.

HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND) are highly prevalent in people living with HIV (PLWH) despite successful treatment with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). HAND pathogenesis is complex and definitive surrogate biomarkers are not clearly defined. Brain function has been assessed through the evaluation of cortical source rhythms with delta waves associated with neurological impairment. The aim of this study was to assess the correlation between EEG cortical sources, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers, and neurocognitive tests in PLWH with HAND. PLWH with HAND without sign

Test-retest reliability of resting-state magnetoencephalography power in sensor and source space.

Several studies have reported changes in spontaneous brain rhythms that could be used as clinical biomarkers or in the evaluation of neuropsychological and drug treatments in longitudinal studies using magnetoencephalography (MEG). There is an increasing necessity to use these measures in early diagnosis and pathology progression; however, there is a lack of studies addressing how reliable they are. Here, we provide the first test-retest reliability estimate of MEG power in resting-state at sensor and source space. In this study, we recorded 3 sessions of resting-state MEG activity from 24 hea

Cortical sources of resting state electroencephalographic rhythms probe brain function in naïve HIV individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Here we evaluated the hypothesis that resting state electroencephalographic (EEG) cortical sources correlated with cognitive functions and discriminated asymptomatic treatment-naïve HIV subjects (no AIDS). METHODS: EEG, clinical, and neuropsychological data were collected in 103 treatment-naïve HIV subjects (88 males; mean age 39.8 years ± 1.1 standard error of the mean, SE). An age-matched group of 70 cognitively normal and HIV-negative (Healthy; 56 males; 39.0 years ± 2.0 SE) subjects, selected from a local university archive, was used for control purposes. White matter vascular lesions are related to parietal-to-frontal coupling of EEG rhythms in mild cognitive impairment.

Do cerebrovascular and Alzheimer's disease (AD) lesions represent additive factors in the development of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) as a putative preclinical stage of AD? Here we tested the hypothesis that directionality of fronto-parietal functional coupling of electroencephalographic (EEG) rhythms is relatively preserved in amnesic MCI subjects in whom the cognitive decline is mainly explained by white-matter vascular load. Resting EEG was recorded in 40 healthy elderly (Nold) and 78 amnesic MCI. In the MCI subjects, white-matter vascular load was quantified based on magnetic resonance

Temporo-spatial stability of complex fractionated atrial electrograms in two distinct and separate episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.

AIMS: Ablation of complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAEs) during atrial fibrillation (AF) has been used as adjunct to contemporary techniques or as an alternative. Temporo-spatial stability of CFAE has been demonstrated in single episodes of AF. We examined temporo-spatial reproducibility of CFAE in two distinct episodes of AF. METHODS AND RESULTS: The left atrium (LA) was mapped using the EnSite system during an episode of induced or spontaneous AF in patients with paroxysmal AF. Sinus rhythm was restored with electrical cardioversion and maintained for 10 min before re-induction of

EEG alterations in non-demented individuals related to apolipoprotein E genotype and to risk of Alzheimer disease.

Identification of preclinical markers is required for early diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and cognitive dysfunction in advancing age. Quantitative EEG was examined in 145 individuals with AD, their unaffected relatives and unrelated individuals. The AD patients and their relatives were stratified by ApoE genotype. The resting EEG parameters were severely changed in AD patients, and in patients carrying the ApoE epsilon4 allele the decrease in alpha power was higher than in epsilon4 non-carriers. The resting EEG parameters were indistinguishable in AD relatives with different ApoE genot

The effect of nitroglycerin on pacing-induced changes in myocardial oxygen consumption and metabolic coronary vasodilation in patients with coronary artery disease.

UNLABELLED: In the present study, we assessed the potential effect of nitroglycerin IV (NTG), a donor of exogenous nitric oxide, on metabolic coronary flow control in patients with coronary artery disease. In 12 patients scheduled for coronary artery surgery, arterial blood pressure, pulmonary capillary wedge pressure, coronary sinus blood flow (continuous thermodilution), myocardial oxygen supply (DVO2), and myocardial oxygen consumption (MVO2) were measured at sinus rhythm and in response to atrial pacing at 30 bpm greater than baseline sinus rate. These measurements were repeated during inf

Miniseries 2-Septal and paraseptal accessory pathways-Part II: Para-Hisian accessory pathways-so-called anteroseptal pathways revisited.

Surgeons, when dividing bypass tracts adjacent to the His bundle, considered them to be 'anteroseptal'. The area was subsequently recognized to be superior and paraseptal, although this description is not entirely accurate anatomically, and conveys little about the potential risk during catheter interventions. We now describe the area as being para-Hisian, and it harbours two types of accessory pathways. The first variant crosses the membranous septum to insert into the muscular ventricular septum without exiting the heart, and hence being truly septal. The second variant inserts distally in t

Pre-excitation syndrome with a change in terminal QRS vector.

Most accessory pathways in pre-excitation syndrome are capable of antegrade conduction from atrium to ventricle, and identified by characteristic ECG abnormalities such as a delta wave (ventricular pre-excitation) and a shortened PR interval. Therefore, the traditional diagnosis method is to detect the initial changes of the QRS complex. Here we report a patient initially mistaken as having atrioventricular re-entrant tachycardia (AVRT) and concealed pre-excitation syndrome. A diagnosis of incomplete latent pre-excitation syndrome was established on the basis of differences between the ECGs dur

Radiofrequency current catheter ablation of the left atrioventricular accessory pathways with paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia.

Seventy patients with left atrioventricular accessory pathways and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT) underwent radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA). The success rate was 94.3%. Among these patients, 26 had manifest preexcitation syndrome, and 44 had concealed preexcitation. Eighteen patients with concealed preexcitation underwent coronary sinus (CS) pacing, and delta wave appeared in 15. The keys to successful RFCA were correct positioning of the radiofrequency (RF) catheter tip, A/V amplitude ratio, AV interval (in sinus rhythm) and VA interval (during SVT or ventricular pacin

Dynamic low frequency EEG phase synchronization patterns during proactive control of task switching.

Cognitive flexibility is critical for humans living in complex societies with ever-growing multitasking demands. Yet the low-frequency neural dynamics of distinct task-specific and domain-general mechanisms sub-serving mental flexibility are still ill-defined. Here we estimated phase electroencephalogram synchronization by using inter-trial phase coherence (ITPC) at the source space while twenty six young participants were intermittently cued to switch or repeat their perceptual categorization rule of Gabor gratings varying in color and thickness (switch task). Therefore, the aim of this study
