Issues of latex safety in dentistry.

The prevalence of reported reactions to natural rubber latex products in both the general population and in dental personnel appears to parallel the rise in glove wearing by health professionals. This paper reviews the irritant and allergic reactions which may be associated with latex products, particularly gloves. The aetiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of immediate Type I (IgE mediated) responses to latex are described in some detail. The paper provides the reader with an insight into factors that may lead to latex allergy and outlines measures for handling 'latex sensitised' i

The significance of occlusion in restorative dentistry.

All occlusal therapy relates ultimately to the hinge position of the mandible. By consensus, the optimum hinge position is centric relation, … lanning to minimize nonaxial forces lies at the heart of the restoration. Virtually all restorative dentistry is affected by the occlusal forces of the teeth in function.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Pharmacology of antibiotics used in dentistry.

The term antibiotic is now generally used to include antimicrobial substances produced by chemical means as well as those produced by micro-organisms. They may be either bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal. A bacteriostatic antibiotic inhibits the growth and replication of bacteria thereby giving the body's natural defence mechanisms time to become effective in overcoming an infection. In the majority of cases, and particularly in patients whose natural resistance is lowered by disorders of the immune system, it is preferable to choose a bacteriocidal agent. The first bacteriocidal antibiotic was

Reactions to Acrylates in Dentistry and Related Factors - The First Croatian Survey Study on Reactions to Acrylates in Dentistry.

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to examine the potential impact of acrylate exposure and the influence of other associated factors on skin and mucosal changes/lesions among dental professionals and students. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this cross-sectional field study, we used a questionaire to survey 136 participants-including dentists, dental technicians, nurses, assistants, and students-to assess skin conditions and the impact of acrylates on skin and mucosal disorders. RESULTS: A high prevalence of self-reported work-related skin changes in dentistry was recorded, affecting 65% of dental profession…

Performance comparison of large language models on pediatric dentistry questions in the Turkish dentistry specialization examination.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the performance of seven leading large language models (Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok-4, GPT-5, Claude-4, Copilot, Perplexity, and GPT-4o) on pediatric dentistry questions from the Turkish Dentistry Specialization Examination (DUS), and to identify differences in their performance on information-based versus case-based question types. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven large language models (Gemini 2.5 Pro, Grok-4, GPT-5, Claude-4, Copilot, Perplexity, and GPT-4o) were evaluated on 127 multiple-choice questions from the DUS pediatric dentistry question bank (2…

Canalis Sinuosis: Implications in Implant Dentistry.

The canalis sinuosis is an anatomical canal located in the anterior maxilla in a minority of patients. It contains a neurovascular bundle that may be encountered during dental implant placement and can be overlooked in radiologic examinations. The neurovascular bundle contains the anterior superior alveolar artery, a branch of the infraorbital nerve, the corresponding vein, and the anterior superior alveolar nerve. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) may be important in identifying this structure to prevent complications. Complications such as the canalis sinuosis may be confused with pat

Special care dentistry: overcoming future challenges.

Introduction Before 2008, special care dentistry did not officially exist until it was formalised as one of the 13 dental specialities, but there were services that provided care for patients with additional needs across various settings, such as the Community Dental Services and other specialities. This led to variability and fragmentation in service provision. The patient groups that fall into the remit of the speciality are diverse and complex and often require treatment in adapted environments with additional equipment or treatment modalities. The NHS has laid out Commissioning Standards in…

Matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors in restorative dentistry.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) have been identified as agents that disintegrate the collagen structures of dental hybrid layers, resulting in reduced restorative bond strength. Multiple MMP inhibitors (MMPIs) are known to counteract this degenerative mechanism, thereby preserving bond strength and promoting the longevity of resin-based restorations. Additionally, literature suggests that certain MMPI materials possess antimicrobial/anticariogenic properties, potentially reducing the risk of secondary caries development. Therefore, this review article aims to narrate on the integration of mat

[Oral sedation in pediatric outpatient dentistry].

THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Was to improve the quality of treatment in pediatric outpatient dentistry with the effective use of oral sedation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study comprised 60 children aged 3-12 years who were undergoing therapeutic/surgical dental treatment. All children's somatic state was assessed as ASAI-II. All children met a number of psychological, anamnestic and procedural criteria. Midazolam and chloropyramine in a dose calculated for the patient's body weight were used as components of oral sedation. The estimated sedation depth was Ramsay II-III. The study included an analys…

Multidisciplinary dentistry for transitional care patients.

A growing patient population is adolescents and young adults who have had one or more serious medical problems and are aging into adulthood. This group of patients has unique medical needs, which has resulted in the development of a specialized area of medicine: transitional care medicine. The case reviews of two of these patients are described. Patient 1 was a 23-year-old man with hereditary pancreatitis. His genetic condition resulted in the need for pancreatic splenectomy and removal of part of his small bowel, resulting in insulin-dependent diabetes and malnutrition. These complex clinical
