Management of a multiple dentoalveolar trauma in permanent dentition with avulsion of a canine: a 4-year follow-up.

Traumatic dental injuries are relatively frequent accidents that typically involve teeth in the maxillary anterior segment. The emergency treatment and the clinical decisions must be efficiently made at the time of injury, and there is a need for long-term follow-up because of the high incidence of complications. The aim of this article was to present the emergency and rehabilitation treatments of a multiple dentoalveolar trauma in the permanent dentition involving different extensions of enamel-dentin crown fracture, pulp exposure, and the avulsion of a canine. The treatment outcomes are repo

Changes in tooth size-arch length relationships from the deciduous to the permanent dentition: a longitudinal study.

The purpose of this investigation is to determine the changes in the maxillary and mandibular tooth size-arch length relationship (TSALD) after the complete eruption of the deciduous dentition (mean age = 4.0 years) to the time of eruption of the second molars (mean age = 13.3 years). In addition, an attempt was made to determine whether TSALD in the permanent dentition can be predicted in the deciduous dentition. Records on 35 male and 27 female subjects were evaluated. Each subject had a clinically acceptable occlusion--that is, a normal molar and canine relationship, at the time of eruption

Effects of removing inferior alveolar neurovascular structures on mandibular growth and the eruption of permanent dentition in puppies.

Investigation was performed on the effects of removing the inferior alveolar neurovascular structures on the permanent dentition and mandibular growth. Five puppies with erupted deciduous teeth had the inferior alveolar neurovascular structures removed unilaterally. When the test animals were 28 weeks old, examination revealed that the deciduous teeth on the side operated had exfoliated but permanent teeth did not replace them. On the other hand, the permanent teeth on the side not operated on replaced the exfoliated deciduous teeth. After a second period of 28 weeks, the germs of the permanen

Accuracy of dental identification of individuals with unrestored permanent teeth by visual comparison with radiographs of mixed dentition.

Forensic dentistry plays a major role in human identification. Teeth carry individual characteristics that differ among different individuals. Dental radiographs depict reality objectively, being the most reliable tool for dental identification. The first aim of this study was to evaluate the accuracy of dental identification of individuals with permanent unrestored teeth by visual comparison with radiographs of mixed dentition. The second aim was to learn which anatomical features were compared by examiners with different backgrounds. A total of 19 forensic experts participated in a web-based

Loss of Permanent First Molars in the Mixed Dentition: Circumstances Resulting in Extraction and Requiring Orthodontic Management.

Extraction of significantly compromised permanent first molars may be indicated during the mixed dentition stage of occlusal development. The purpose of this article was to review circumstances that can result in the loss of a permanent first molar-including dental caries, molar incisor hypomineralization, eruption disturbances of permanent teeth, and failure of restorative treatment to affirm that a complete dental arch is not necessary for the existence of a functional dental arch. The extraction of permanent first molar(s) with subsequent orthodontic treatment in a young patient can be cons

Development of odontoma-like malformation in the permanent dentition caused by intrusion of primary incisor--a case report.

A case is presented of a 10-year-old girl, referred for consultation for failure of the maxillary central incisor to erupt. At 18 months, the patient underwent intrusion of the right central primary incisor, which re-erupted several months later. Radiographic examination revealed a complex odontoma-like malformation located next to the floor of the nose, away from the permanent incisors. Clinical examination revealed space loss of the corresponding permanent incisor and severe hypoplasia of the permanent right lateral incisor. Because of its deep location, it was decided not to remove the odon

Prepubertal periodontitis affecting the deciduous and permanent dentition in a patient with cyclic neutropenia. A case report and discussion.

Neutropenia is a transient or chronic blood disorder characterized by a decrease in the number of circulating polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs). Neutrophils are a major cellular defense against infection, and depletion of these cells is potentially fatal. Stomatitis and gingivitis frequently are seen in patients with neutropenia. Therefore, the diagnosis of severe oral pathoses of obscure origin must include a differential white blood cell count. The importance of the dentist's role is dramatically illustrated in the rare case reported here, since the oral condition was the reason for this p

Association of infant growth with emergence of permanent dentition among 12 year-aged southern Chinese school children.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to comprehensively investigate the relationship between tooth eruption and infant growth to explain the theory of tooth emergence. This study aimed to investigate the association between infant growth during the first year of life and the emergence of the permanent teeth. METHODS: A random sample of 668, 12-year-old students was recruited from a birth cohort. Erupted permanent tooth number was recorded. The association of infant growth (growth trajectories and growth rates) and permanent tooth emergence was examined through logistic regression analyses. The regress

Growth changes of general and dental health status in Taiwanese children from mixed to early permanent dentition.

For this study, the general and dental health status of 463 Taiwanese children aged 9 to 12 years was evaluated. There were statistically significant increases in all measurements from Hellman's dental developmental stages IIIA to IVA except for the maximum mandibular protrusive, right lateral, and left lateral movements. Maximum bite forces had diminished in stage IIIB. Boys had larger maximum bite forces and hand-grip forces than did girls after stage IIIC. The proportion of subjects with TMD signs or symptoms increased to 60% by stage IVA.
