A systematic review of marginal soft tissue at implants subjected to immediate loading or immediate restoration.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this systematic review was to critically evaluate marginal soft-tissue aspects at implants subjected to immediate loading or immediate restoration. METHODS: An electronic Medline search from 1966 up to August 2005 was conducted to identify prospective and retrospective studies on immediate implant loading. The search strategy was complemented by hand searching in peer-reviewed journals. Studies reporting on soft-tissue aspects at implants subjected to immediate loading or immediate restoration and with a follow-up time of at least 1 year were included. Assessment

Survival rate of immediate functionally loaded ball-attachment mini-implants retaining mandibular overdentures: A systematic review.

AIM: Immediate loading protocols are frequently applied when placing mini-implants (MIs), although many of these may not be functional loading. Data on immediately functionally loaded MIs are limited. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to answer the question: What is the survival rate (SR) of immediately functionally loaded MIs placed in the edentulous mandible to retain a complete mandibular overdenture? SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Studies published in peer-reviewed journals up to April 2025 were considered. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An electronic search was conducted using MeSH terms and free-te

Use of osseointegrated implants in the intermaxillary suture in a patient with microstomia: Case report with a 2-year follow-up.

AIM: To report the rehabilitation of a female patient, 40 years old, with a microstomia. CASE REPORT: The Z-plasty surgery was performed in the region of the labial commissure to increase the mouth opening. In the mandible, two implants were installed in the interforaminal region and an overdenture with bar/clip attachment system was made. The maxilla was atrophic, with the presence of two bone sites in the intermaxillary suture region: the first one anterior to the incisive foramen and the second one in the middle of the hard palate. Two implants were placed without a graft in those sites. T

Six-Year Survival of a Mini Dental Implant-Retained Overdenture in a Child with Ectodermal Dysplasia.

Patients with ectodermal dysplasia (ED) experience several problems caused by abnormal development and functioning of the head and neck region. In addition to developmental nasal cartilage abnormalities and absence of sweat glands, hair, and eyebrows, edentulism or developmental disorders of teeth (cone-shaped teeth) are commonly observed in these types of patients. ED is also characterized by underdeveloped alveolar ridges, a decreased occlusal vertical dimension, reduced salivary secretion, and dry oral mucosa, which make prosthetic rehabilitation difficult. Few studies of intraosseous denta

Rehabilitation with implant-supported overdentures in preteens patients with ectodermal dysplasia: A cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) patients suffering of oligo-anodontia require early dental treatment to improve oral functions and reduce social impairment. The aim of this study was to evaluate the skeletal growth, implant and prosthetic survival rate, success, and complications after the rehabilitation with a maxillary denture and an implant-supported overdenture provided by a sliding bar in case of severe hypodontia/anodontia related to HED. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study began in 2009. Nine patients over 7 years old with HED and associated oli

The implant-supported milled-bar mandibular overdenture.

Osseointegrated dental implants have been proven successful in the treatment of edentulism. The predictability of the implant-supported prosthesis has also been established. Several techniques have been described for the successful restoration of the edentulous mandible: fixed-detachable prostheses with either the original Brånemark hybrid prosthesis design or conventional implant-supported fixed partial dentures, implant-retained overdentures, and implant-supported overdentures. However, in cases of advanced ridge resorption in which facial tissue support is needed from the flanges of the pro

Tooth-Supported O-Ball Retained Maxillary Overdenture in a Patient Contraindicated for Dental Implants Due to Bisphosphonate Therapy.

Tooth-supported overdentures offer an effective and conservative option for patients with partial edentulism and systemic contraindications to implant therapy. Retaining natural roots under the denture base helps preserve alveolar bone, enhances proprioception, and improves prosthesis stability. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a 76-year-old man with osteoporosis on long-term bisphosphonate therapy, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Due to the high risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ), implant placement was contraindicated. A maxillary overdenture retain

Dental findings and rehabilitation in familial osteodysplasia (Anderson type): a case report.

Familial osteodysplasia is a disorder of osteogenesis with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance which predominantly affects facial bones. No recent case had been reported, particularly from a dental point of view since the syndrome was first described by Anderson et al (JAMA 1972;220:1687-93). A 23-year-old male with familial osteodysplasia was presented in maxillofacial and dental aspects with clinical and radiological manifestations including malocclusion, abnormal teeth alignment, impacted teeth, shape disturbances including uncompleted coronal formation, root shortening with bulbo

Four-year assessment of masticatory function in mandibular overdenture wearers: A randomised clinical trial comparing two to four implants to retain the prosthesis.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on the mid- to long-term masticatory capacity of mandibular overdenture (IOD) wearers, particularly regarding the use of posterior implants to retention. OBJECTIVES: To periodically evaluate mastication of IOD wearers, comparing the effectiveness of two to four implants to retain the prosthesis. METHODS: In a randomised controlled clinical trial, 20 complete edentulous patients (14 women), aged 51-84 years (mean age 69.1 ± 9.6), received new bimaxillary complete dentures (CD). After adaptation, baseline measurements of masticatory performance (X50) and swallowi

Fabrication of an overdenture covering a torus palatinus using a combination of denture base materials: a case report.

A maxillary torus provides a challenge when restoring an edentulous arch. Tori tend to have very thin mucosa and can be intolerant of normal pressures from a denture base. The tori tend to have large undercuts and at times extend to the junction with the soft palate, preventing the creation of a good palatal seal. Triple lamination involves combining 3 materials to fabricate a denture base that utilizes the retentive aspects of the torus. The thermoplastic flange provides a measure of flexibility, allowing the denture to seat over the torus. The resilient liner provides a cushion to diffuse th

Prototyping of increased vertical dimension of occlusion using an existing removable partial denture and composite resin: a case report.

Full-mouth rehabilitation can be challenging due to the complexity of restoring the vertical dimension of occlusion (VDO) and replacing missing teeth. In partially edentulous patients, the concept of a bonded composite resin prototype for increasing the VDO has previously been applied through the use of an overlay removable partial denture (RPD) with acrylic resin covering the existing dentition. Unfortunately, this type of prosthesis does not always accurately model the function and phonetics intended for the definitive prostheses, and the esthetic result often is less than ideal. It would be

Implant overdenture and Locator system in edentulous patient with severely resorbed mandible - a case report.

Clinical studies have revealed that the main objective of implants in the edentulous jaw is to provide support for fixed prostheses or to stabilize complete dentures. Various attachment systems were developed for universal use in partially and completely edentulous patients such as clasps, cone-shape telescope copings, magnets, bar systems, locators. The aim of this case report is to present the Locator attachment that does not use the splinting of implants. Four implants were placed in the foraminal region and the Locator attachment system was used to connect overdentures to mandibular dental

[The influence of different root length on stress distribution in the bone around abutment root of telescopic overdenture].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of bone height around the roots on stress distribution in a mandible with two canines remained and covered with an telescopic overdenture. METHODS: Three-dimensional finite element method. RESULTS: As the height of the bone around the roots decreased, the stress increased. But the maximum stress in the bone in this study is lower than that in the bone around the canine under normal condition. CONCLUSION: In the mandible, when the alveolar bone resorption reaches the apical 1/3 of canine (root length 4, 5 mm), if part of the tooth crown was removed, to

Current complications and issues of implant superstructure.

The purpose of this review is to search for complications of dental implant superstructures and consider the issues involved. This narrative review was performed by searching through PubMed databases and review articles that were published after 1990. Misfitting of the superstructure can result in loosening of screws, reduced preload, and in some cases, significant stress around the implant. External connection modalities and single implant prostheses have been reported to have more loose or broken abutment screws. In addition, when zirconia abutment was used for platform shifting, the rate of
