BACKGROUND: Although parents may joyfully anticipate the birth of a child, it's impossible for them to know ahead of time just how profoundly their lives will change. Postpartum depression (PPD) can result. While there is a substantial body of research regarding maternal PPD, paternal PPD has received far less attention and is neither adequately understood nor diagnosed. This is exacerbated by outdated but persistent sociocultural masculinity norms and the stigmas around mental health issues.
PURPOSE: This study sought to explore the lived experiences of new fathers with PPD in order to provi

BACKGROUND: Distinguishing postpartum women with bipolar from unipolar depression remains challenging, particularly in obstetrical and primary care settings. The post-birth period carries the highest lifetime risk for the onset or recurrence of Bipolar Disorder (BD). Characterization of differences between unipolar and bipolar depression symptom presentation and severity is critical to differentiate the two disorders.
METHODS: We performed a secondary analysis of a study of 10,000 women screened by phone with the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale at 4-6 weeks post-birth. Screen-positive mo

PURPOSE: Pregnancy and time period right after labour are connected with some dangerous states, such as: pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH), which afflict 6-10 % of pregnant women and mood disorders where postpartum depression occurs among 10-15 % of women after labour and so-called baby blues afflicts around 43 % of them. Scientists tried to link those diseases which afflicts thousands of women per year, and the linking factor appears to be methyldopa which is the first choice treatment of PIH. Recent study showed that 778 % of pregnant women treated with methyldopa suffered to postpartum d

This study describes postpartum depression rates and risk factors for mothers with infants with cleft lip and/or palate as postpartum depression has been associated with a range of negative maternal and child outcomes. A retrospective chart review from August 2009 to May 2015 included medical diagnoses, demographics, receipt of prenatal diagnosis, and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). Mothers (N = 206) had infants (59.2% male; mean age in weeks 5.1 ± 6.9) with isolated cleft lip (18%), cleft palate (22.8%), or cleft lip and palate (59.2%). Mothers ranged from 16 to 45 years old

PURPOSE: Prepregnancy obesity and weight changes accompanying pregnancy (gestational weight gain and postpartum weight retention) may be associated with risk of maternal depressive symptoms during pregnancy and in the postpartum. The few studies that have examined these relationships report conflicting findings.
METHODS: We studied pregnant (n = 2112) and postpartum (n = 1686) women enrolled in Project Viva. We used self-reported prepregnancy and postpartum weight and measured prenatal weight to calculate prepregnancy body mass index (BMI), gestational weight gain (GWG), and postpartum weight

INTRODUCTION: Corporal punishment is closely related to physical abuse of children and is associated with several negative characteristics and experiences in children and youths. This study examined the relative unique contribution of 6 variables (social support, socioeconomic status, depression, self-efficacy, knowledge of child development, and history of postpartum depression) to maternal corporal punishment of children.
METHOD: A sample of 76 mothers was dichotomized into those who never spanked or hit with an object and those who have spanked or hit with an object. The mothers were recru

BACKGROUND: This study aimed toexamine the relationships between fear of childbirth, birth satisfaction, postpartum depression, and mother-infant bonding.
METHODS: The population of this cross-sectional study consisted of postpartum women who had given birth vaginally. A power analysis was conducted using G*Power (version 3.1.9.7) to determine the required sample size. The a priori power analysis, based on a multiple linear regression model (f² = 0.15, α = 0.05, power = 0.80), indicated that at least 346 participants were needed. The study was completed with 520 postpartum women who met the i

Postpartum depression (PPD) is the most important postpartum mood disorder due to its significant effect on both the infant and family health. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) has been suggested as a hormonal agent involved in the development of depression. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the plasma concentrations of AVP and the score of Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS). This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2016-2017 in Darehshahr Township, Ilam Province, Iran. In the first phase, 303 pregnant women, who were at 38 weeks, met the inclusion crit

Mother-to-infant bonding is important for long-term child development. The aim of this study was to investigate bonding in women admitted to a Mother and Baby Unit with postpartum depression (PD, n = 64) and postpartum psychosis (PP, n = 91). Participants completed the Postpartum Bonding Questionnaire (PBQ), the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Young Mania Rating Scale (YMRS) weekly during admission. At admission, 57.1% of women with PD had impaired bonding, compared to only 17.6% of women with PP (p-value < 0.001). At discharge, only 18.2% of women with PD and 5.9% of women

BACKGROUND: Many women experience depressive symptoms during pregnancy and postpartum periods. These depressive symptoms are often accompanied by other inflammatory morbidities present during pregnancy. Tryptophan (TRP) metabolism has attracted considerable attention due to its influence on the onset of depression via induction of inflammation. We examined the changes in plasma levels of TRP metabolites in pregnant women with depressive symptoms during pregnancy and/or the postpartum period.
METHODS: In line with a previous analysis using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), parti

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a severe mental health disorder affecting 10% to 15% of postpartum women worldwide. Pre-eclampsia is a hypertensive disorder of pregnancy that has been identified as a significant factor for PPD due to its vascular dysfunction, systemic inflammation and neurobiological alterations. The neuroinflammatory mechanisms common to both pre-eclampsia and PPD, that contribute to depressive symptoms include elevated proinflammatory cytokines (interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha), activation of the kynurenine pathway, and oxidative stress. Background/Objectives: The presence of autoimmune thyroiditis was found to be associated with an increased prevalence of sexual dysfunction. Women's sexual health was not investigated in postpartum disorders of the thyroid gland. The aim of this study was to assess female sexual functioning and depressive symptoms in postpartum thyroiditis. Methods: This study compared four groups of non-lactating women who gave birth within 12 months before the beginning of the study: women with postpartum thyroiditis and overt hypothyroidism (group A), women with postpartum thyroiditis and subclinical hypoth

Postpartum sleep disruption is a risk factor for postpartum depression (PPD) as well as a potential treatment target. In the first 6 months after delivery, when the risk of PPD is greatest, fragmented maternal sleep is most often related to necessary infant night feedings. Clinicians' conversations about planning for and navigating postpartum sleep should include questions about patient expectations, cultural traditions, and available support. For women at high risk of PPD, or with moderate to severe PPD or other symptoms of mental illness, protecting one 4-5 hour period of consolidated nightt

Depression, anxiety and psychotic disorders are common perinatal mental health disorders in the postpartum period. Depressive symptoms that occur postpartum are also present in the prenatal period in 50% of patients. Risk factors for the development of postpartum depression include poor relationship with the partner, lack of social support, mother's low socioeconomic status and multiparity. It has been determined that reproductive hormones change significantly during peripartum. Progesterone is one of these hormones and acts on the central nervous system starting from the fetal period; neuroge

BACKGROUND: Postpartum depression affects 14% of pregnant individuals and is a leading cause of preventable maternal mortality. Complications of pregnancy, such as preterm labor or pre-eclampsia, may require hospitalization for close monitoring and management. The impact of an antenatal hospitalization during pregnancy on postnatal depression remains understudied.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether hospital admission during pregnancy was associated with postpartum depressive symptoms in individuals who were enrolled in a collaborative care model and to evaluate whether enrollment in the collabora
