Malignancy-associated generalised exfoliative dermatitis: A retrospective study in a single-centre Asian cohort.

BACKGROUND: Erythroderma is an inflammatory skin condition that causes extensive erythema and skin scaling amounting ≥90% of the body surface area. This retrospective cohort study describes the prevalence of malignancy-associated erythroderma in a single centre where there was concerted effort to systematically offer malignancy screens to all adult erythroderma patients above the age of 65 years. METHODS: Clinical charts were reviewed for all adult inpatients and outpatients with erythroderma who attended the National University Hospital (NUH) from 1 July 2019 to 31 December 2021. Data collec

Quantitative estimation and recommendations for supplementation of protein lost through scaling in exfoliative dermatitis.

BACKGROUND: Exfoliative dermatitis (ED) can result in protein loss due to scaling causing a negative nitrogen balance. Freedberg and Baden (J Invest Dermatol 1962; 38: 277-284) estimated the amount of scale lost in ED by collecting it in an occlusive suit. Subsequently, the nitrogen content was determined by the Kjeldahl method. The exact amount of protein supplementation in ED, dependent on scale loss, is not well established. As occlusion and hyperthermia caused by the suit can inhibit scaling, the objectives of the present study were to design an alternative method to measure the amount of

Oxcarbazepine-induced drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms syndrome presenting as exfoliative dermatitis.

Drug rash with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) syndrome is a type of severe adverse cutaneous drug reaction characterized by fever, skin eruption, hematological abnormalities, and internal organ involvement. Although anticonvulsant drugs are mainly implicated in DRESS, newer anticonvulsants such as oxcarbazepine-induced definite cases of DRESS syndrome are rare and oxcarbazepine-induced DRESS syndrome presenting as exfoliative dermatitis is even rarer. We report a case of a 35-year-old male who developed DRESS syndrome presenting as exfoliative dermatitis after taking oxcarbazepine

Severe exfoliative dermatitis caused by strontium ranelate: two cases of a new drug reaction.

Strontium ranelate is a relatively new drug used as a second-line treatment for osteoporosis, often targeted at older patients. It is known to cause skin rash and rarely drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms, but there are no reports of exfoliative dermatitis as a reaction in the literature. We present the first two cases of this adverse effect of the drug, combined with eosinophilia but no systemic symptoms. We illustrate the significant morbidity involved and use of systemic steroid treatment required, highlighting the need for awareness of this reaction in medical and partic

Disseminated exfoliative dermatitis associated with all-transretinoic Acid in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia.

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a biologically and clinically separate type of acute myeloid leukemia characterized by a translocation involving the retinoic acid receptor-alpha (RARa) locus on chromosome 17, the great majority of which is t(15; 17)(q24.1; q21.1) (Collins (1998), Melnick and Licht (1999), and Grimwade (1999)). Retinoic acid is a critical ligand in the differentiation pathway of multiple tissues, mediated through binding to an RAR. All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) is a subgroup of the retinoid family, which induces complete remission (CR) in APL by causing differentiation a

Resolution of exfoliative dermatitis and Malassezia pachydermatis overgrowth in a cat after surgical thymoma resection.

A four-year-old, male neutered domestic shorthaired cat was presented with a two-week history of nasal and ocular discharge, generalised exfoliative dermatitis, intense pruritus, polydipsia, polyphagia, weight loss, intermittent hindlimb ataxia and lethargy. Cutaneous populations of Malassezia pachydermatis yeast organisms were found to be elevated. The generalised nature of the disease prompted survey radiography which revealed the presence of a cranial mediastinal mass which was subsequently resected and found to be a thymoma. Within six months of surgery, systemic and cutaneous signs had re

A case of tubulo-interstitial nephritis with exfoliative dermatitis and hepatitis due to phenobarbital hypersensitivity.

Severe exfoliative dermatitis and liver dysfunction developed in a 5-year-old girl 3 weeks after initiation of phenobarbital therapy. Liver function improved gradually after discontinuation of phenobarbital. During the convalescent stage an initially mild renal dysfunction was exacerbated by episodes of post-transfusion haemolysis. Liver biopsy revealed moderate parenchymal damage with subacute cellular infiltration. Renal biopsy demonstrated the cardinal findings of interstitial nephritis, excluding the possibility of acute tubular necrosis caused by haemolysis. Serial lymphocyte transformati
