Cutaneous Effects and Aesthetic Management of Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists: A Narrative Review.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) are among the most widely prescribed medications in the United States, with expanding indications beyond type-2 diabetes mellitus to include obesity, cardiovascular risk reduction, and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis. As their utilization increases, the dermatologic effects of these agents become increasingly relevant to clinical practice. This narrative review examines the cutaneous effects of GLP-1RAs across six domains: facial volume loss and accelerated skin aging, changes in hair density, wound healing, striae distensae

Cutaneous toxicity as a predictive biomarker for clinical outcome in patients receiving anticancer therapy.

The relationship between treatment outcome and cutaneous toxicity induced by anticancer therapy has gained attention in the past decade. In this article, we have provided an overview of the 3 main classes of anticancer agents-specifically, molecularly targeted kinase inhibitors, immune checkpoint inhibitors, and cytotoxic chemotherapeutics-and described the data evaluating the association between cutaneous toxicity induced by these agents and survival benefit. Although preliminary studies are promising with regard to the potential role of cutaneous toxicities as a surrogate biomarker of effica

Psoriasis and type 2 diabetes mellitus: epidemiology, shared mechanisms, and therapeutic implications: a narrative review.

Psoriasis is a chronic immune-mediated inflammatory disorder increasingly recognized as a systemic disease rather than an isolated cutaneous condition. In addition to its dermatologic burden, psoriasis is associated with multiple metabolic comorbidities, among which type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is particularly important because of its prevalence, long-term complications, and potential bidirectional relationship with psoriatic inflammation. Epidemiologic studies consistently suggest that patients with psoriasis, especially those with moderate-to-severe or longstanding disease, have a higher

The Safety Profiles of Adalimumab, Infliximab, Etanercept, Secukinumab and Ustekinumab in Psoriasis - A 30-month Observational Cohort Prospective Study of Adverse Events in Biologic Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Although biologic agents are very effective, long-term comparative studies demonstrating their safety relative to one another are still lacking. METHODS: A total of 124 patients with psoriasis were followed up for 30 months; 74 received anti-TNF-alpha inhibitors (adalimumab, etanercept, infliximab), 33 were on ustekinumab, and 17 were treated with secukinumab. The rates of adverse events in these groups were recorded and statistically analyzed. RESULTS: Infliximab-treated patients showed a high occurrence of asymptomatic, but increased liver enzymes, fatigue, and respiratory as w

Association of Adverse Drug Events with Broad-spectrum Antibiotic Use in Hospitalized Patients: A Single-center Study.

Objective The importance of antimicrobial stewardship is increasingly highlighted in this age of antimicrobial resistance. A better comprehension of adverse drug events (ADEs) can promote the appropriate use of antibiotics. We aimed to quantify the incidence of ADEs associated with broad-spectrum systemic antibiotics in a hospital setting. Methods We conducted a six-month prospective, observational study at Osaka University Hospital to describe the incidence of ADEs in patients hospitalized in general wards undergoing treatment with broad-spectrum antibiotics [carbapenems, piperacillin/tazobac

Effects of long-term cyclosporine A therapy on renal functions in Behçet's disease.

Cyclosporin A (CsA), one of the most extensively investigated immunomodulatory agents, is widely used today in the treatment of various immunologically triggered dermatologic disorders. The immunologic basis for the therapeutic action of CsA depends on the suppression of lymphokine production by T cells. Due to its immunologic effects, this drug is also commonly preferred in Behcet's disease, especially with neurologic and ocular involvement. Since the course of this chronic disease presents remissions and exacerbations, drug therapy should be long term. Studies on the safety of long-term use

The role of the family physician in the day care setting.

Injuries and infectious respiratory, gastrointestinal and dermatologic diseases are common in day care settings. Most day care injuries are contusions, abrasions and cuts involving the head and extremities. Impact-absorbing surfaces under playground equipment, safely-proofing of all play areas, increased staff supervision, and staff and parental education might reduce injuries by as much as 75 percent. Respiratory illnesses are the most common day care infections. Chemoprophylaxis with rifampin is required for all close contacts of children infected with Haemophilus influenzae type B and Neiss

[What's new in clinical dermatology?].

2013 has been the year of large genetic studies of the GWAS type (Genome wide association studies) in common diseases such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, aimed at localization of candidate genes. It was also the year of population-based studies from huge public or private registers. Thus, epidemiologic correlations have been put forward: psoriasis and vascular risk, psoriasis and rhinosinusitis, rosacea and migraine, acne and food habits, eczema and basal-cell carcinoma, vitiligo and lower risk of skin cancer, cutaneous Ro/SS-A pos lupus and cancer, chronic eczema and calcium-channel inhl

Cutaneous lupus erythematosus: diagnosis and treatment.

Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) encompasses a wide range of dermatologic manifestations, which may or may not be associated with the development of systemic disease. Cutaneous lupus is divided into several sub-types, including acute CLE (ACLE), sub-acute CLE (SCLE) and chronic CLE (CCLE). CCLE includes discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), LE profundus (LEP), chilblain cutaneous lupus and lupus tumidus. The diagnosis of these diseases requires proper classification of the sub-type, through a combination of physical examination, laboratory studies, histology, antibody serology and occasionally

Fixed-combination products in the management of acne vulgaris.

Acne vulgaris is the most common dermatologic disorder in the United States. Although its cause is unknown, various factors are implicated in its pathogenesis. No single topical antiacne medication acts on all the major pathophysiologic events. Combined use of agents with different modes of action provides better patient outcomes than monotherapy. Topical fixed-combination therapies include antibiotics with benzoyl peroxide (BPO) or retinoids, and retinoids with BPO. With increased efficacy can come increased irritation from the combination or formulation excipients. Surfactants, preservatives

DMSO: an aid to combat pain and pruritus.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a highly reactive by-product of paper production in the form of an odorless, colorless liquid that has been studied since the 1860s. Initially it was utilized as a solvent, but more recently it is being investigated for therapeutic applications. Owing to its versatility, the use of DMSO has been proposed in many different medical fields for a variety of applications, with possibly the widest use being in the field of dermatology. The clinical interest in the use of DMSO for dermatology conditions stems from this solution's efficacy as a vehicle to deliver pharmacol

The Emerging Role of Oncodermatology in a Hemato-Oncology Unit in a Tertiary Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Our dermatology department consistently receives the largest proportion of internal on-call referrals from the Hematology-Oncology Department. Individuals with hematological malignancies are particularly susceptible to dermatologic conditions secondary to immunosuppression and multi-agent exposure, which can impact cancer therapy, leading to morbidity and mortality. METHODS: Our primary objective was to analyze the range of dermatologic conditions observed in patients with hematologic malignancies and to identify potential associations with anticancer therapies. We conducted a ret

Cyclosporin A.

Cyclosporin A is a new immunosuppressive agent that selectively affects T helper cells without suppressing the bone marrow. Cyclosporin A has been used primarily to prevent rejection in organ transplantation and acute graft-versus-host disease. Studies suggest that it may be of benefit in psoriasis, pemphigus vulgaris, bullous pemphigoid, Behçet's disease, and collagen vascular disorders. Since cyclosporin A has a potentially important use in dermatology, and since a number of dermatologic side effects are seen as a consequence of its use, it is important that dermatologists be familiar with t

Evaluating Medicaid Coverage for Over-the-Counter Treatments for Diaper Dermatitis.

Diaper dermatitis is a common dermatologic condition in infancy, frequently managed with over-the-counter (OTC) products. We conducted a cross-sectional review of Medicaid Preferred Drug Lists across 49 states and the District of Columbia to evaluate coverage of 14 commonly used OTC diaper dermatitis treatments. Coverage varied widely by state and product class, with therapeutic agents, such as topical antifungals, low potency corticosteroids, and antibiotics, more frequently covered than preventive barrier products, such as petrolatum and zinc oxide. These findings reveal significant state-le
