Systematic review of laryngocele and pyolaryngocele management in the age of robotic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: A laryngocele is a space that develops as a result of pathological dilatation of the laryngeal saccule. However, the reported management of laryngoceles varies. We conducted a systematic review of the literature regarding the surgical management of laryngoceles and pyolaryngoceles, to understand the evolving nature of treatment for this rare condition. METHODS: We searched for publications in the PubMed, Cochrane Library, JBI Library of Systematic Reviews, and Ovid databases using the terms "laryngocele", "pyolaryngocele", and "laryngopyocele", and reviewed the identified articles.

Pneumosinus Dilatans: Over 100 Years Without an Etiology.

PURPOSE: Pneumosinus dilatans (PD) is a rare pathologic hyperaeration of the paranasal sinuses that causes serious deformation of the overlying bone and soft tissue. The condition occurs most commonly in the frontal sinus of young men who present with different complaints, including cosmetic. More than 100 cases have been reported in the literature since it was first described in 1898; however, the etiology of this condition remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A systematic review of all available clinical publications on the subject of PD was conducted in the PubMed electronic database. T

Mechanism of aortic root dilation and cardiovascular function in tetralogy of Fallot.

The aortic root dilation in tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) is a long-term clinical problem, because a severely dilated aorta can lead to aortic regurgitation, dissection, or rupture, which can be fatal, necessitating surgical intervention. The details of the mechanism of aortic root dilation, however, are unclear. We have shown that aortic stiffness is increased in patients with repaired TOF, and may mirror the histological abnormality of elastic fiber disruption and matrix expansion. This aortic stiffness is related closely to the aortic dilation, indicating that aortic stiffness may be a predicto

Staged male urethroplasty transferring megalourethra tissue as free graft dorsal inlay to proximal urethral atresia in VACTERL association.

Megalourethra is a rare spectrum of urologic malformations of penile corporal structures frequently associated with multiple congenital anomalies, such as prune belly syndrome or vertebral, anorectal, cardiac, trachea-esophageal, renal, and limb (VACTERL association) defects. A 6-year-old boy with VACTERL association and proximal urethral atresia with distal fusiform megalourethra underwent staged reconstruction, including appendicovesicostomy, perineal urethrostomy, and first-stage urethroplasty with a dorsal inlay free graft of megalourethra tissue to the proximal urethral atretic region, fo

Dilated lymphatics in Gottron's papules.

The histopathology of Gottron's papules has not been often reported. Morphological descriptions of these lesions are mainly focused on changes of the epidermis and interface, and on the nature of the inflammatory infiltrate. Dilated vascular vessels of Gottron's papules are rarely mentioned in the literature. We studied these vessels in a biopsy specimen obtained from Gottron's papule in a 65-year-old woman with D2-40 antibody. Although most of the vessels were identified as blood vessels (venules and capillaries), some were demonstrated to be dilated lymphatic vessels.

Towards a better understanding of abdominal bloating and distension in functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Abdominal bloating is an extremely common symptom affecting up to 96% of patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders and even 30% of the general population. To date bloating has often been viewed as being synonymous with an actual increase in abdominal girth, but recent evidence suggests that this is not necessarily the case. This review examines the relationship between the symptom of bloating and the physical sign of abdominal distension, as well as examining the epidemiology, pathophysiology and treatment options available for this debilitating aspect of the functional gastrointesti

Correlation of sonographic findings with histopathological changes of the bile ducts in rabbits infected with Clonorchis sinensis.

Clonorchiasis is an important parasitic disease of humans in Korea. The present study intended to compare sonographic findings with histopathological changes in experimental clonorchiasis. Eighteen New Zealand white rabbits were infected with metacercariae of Clonorchis sinensis, and examined 4, 10, and 22 weeks post-infection (PI). Four infected rabbits were treated with praziquantel 10 weeks PI and were examined 12 weeks after treatment. Sonography revealed mild to severe dilatation of the intrahepatic ducts (IHDD) and slightly increased periductal echoes in 12 out of 14 rabbits at 4 weeks P

Anomalies of the posterior communicating artery and their potential clinical significance.

This study of the posterior communicating artery (PCoA) in 126 cranial cavities of adult cadavers revealed some hitherto unreported anomalies. These included: the origin of one PCoA from the ophthalmic artery inside the optic canal; the presence of three PCoA's on one side; the occurrence of two posterior cerebral arteries of different origin on one side; and the existence of junctional dilatations at both ends of a PCoA. Junctional dilatation at the commencement of the artery was seen in 6.3% of cases. More common anomalies were a fetal type of posterior cerebral artery in 31.7% and macroaneu

Hydromyelia in a Reeves' muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi).

A 24-day-old, 2.2-kg, female Reeves' muntjac (Muntiacus reevesi) acutely developed left hind limb lameness that resolved with rest and anti-inflammatory drugs but recurred at 8 mo of age. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the lumbar, sacral, and coccygeal spine revealed a fluid-filled dilatation of the central canal of the spinal cord, which was interpreted as a hydromyelic cyst. Surgical exploration and drainage of the cyst were attempted. Despite initially improved mobility, severe plantar ulceration of both hocks developed. The animal was euthanatized. Gross necropsy of the central nervou

[Microflora in chagasic megaesophagus].

Chagasic patients with megaesophagus were submitted to an endoscopy of the upper digestive tract and the samples were collected with special instruments under sterilized conditions. One of the four samples collected was from the stase liquid and the other three samples were collected from fragments of the esophageal mucosa at one, three and five centimeters from the esophageal-stomach transition (Z line). The samples were analyzed by the Microbiology and Pathologic labs for the identification of microorganisms. After that, the results were correlated with the degree of mega esophagus according

Ten-year follow-up of dilatation of aortic structures in Fallot-type anomalies.

OBJECTIVES: Dilatation of the aortic root structures or ascending aorta is often observed in patients with Fallot-type anomalies. We aimed to determine the dilation rate of the aortic structures and investigate strategies for managing this phenomenon. METHODS: In this retrospective study, we enrolled 66 out of 801 patients who underwent corrective surgery for Fallot-type anomalies (tetralogy of Fallot [TOF] and Fallot-type double outlet right ventricle [DORV]) between 2004 and 2020. These 66 patients had follow-up cardiac computed tomography (CT) angiography images taken at least 5 years afte

Malignant renal obstruction without dilatation.

A 61 year old male presented with a one-week history of abdominal pain and loose stools. He had recently received treatment for cellulitis with flucloxacillin. He was anuric on presentation requiring haemodialysis. His ultrasound scan showed patent vessels with no signs of obstruction. A kidney biopsy revealed tubulointerstitial nephritis, attributed to recent treatment with flucloxacillin. A week later he developed lower limb thromboembolic disease triggering further investigations. A FDG PET-CT scan revealed a large FDG-avid retroperitoneal mass causing non-dilated obstruction of both kidney

Pancreaticobiliary long common channel syndrome and congenital anomalous dilatation of the choledochal duct--study of 46 patients.

Retrospectively evaluated clinical, radiological and anatomical findings of 46 patients with tubular or cystic dilated choledochal ducts indicate the following conclusion: Pathological stricture of the sphincter of Oddi system, including a hypertrophic and spastic portion of the sphincter choledochus inferior, called "narrow segment", raises the pressure in the choledochal duct to pathological levels and consequently causes a dilatation of the duct during a specific embryonic phase. Such a pathological sphincter of Oddi system develops if a long common channel persists as the result of a distu

Granular cell tumor of the pancreas with chronic dilation of the main pancreatic duct.

Although a granular cell tumor (GCT) can originate in various locations, GCT of the pancreas is a rare entity. We herein report a case of GCT of the pancreas with chronic dilation of the main pancreatic duct (MPD). The patient had been referred to our institution for epigastric pain 12 years ago at 50 years old. Multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) had shown dilation of the MPD up to 8 mm in diameter from the pancreatic body to the tail. However, she had refused additional workup and been lost to follow-up. She was referred to our institution at 62 years old, as dilation of the MPD had
