Post-traumatic stress disorder and body satisfaction among patients at Ruhigita clinic, Bukavu (DRC): an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Over the past two decades, armed conflicts have intensified globally, with Africa disproportionately affected. Since January 2025, renewed violence by the March 23 Movement (M23) in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has generated widespread trauma, displacement, and psychological distress. Beyond emotional suffering, trauma has been linked to altered body perception and reduced body satisfaction, particularly among women survivors of violence, adding further complexity to the psychological burden. OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the prevalence of post-traumatic stress dis

Waiting between war and loss: a qualitative study on the experience of ambiguous loss among Syrian refugees.

INTRODUCTION: Ambiguous loss refers to individuals' lack of knowledge about the whereabouts or fate of loved ones due to traumatic events such as war or natural disasters. It is associated with significant economic, social, and psychological consequences, including grief, depression, and identity confusion. METHODS: We examined the psychological impact of ambiguous loss among 15 refugees displaced by the Syrian civil war. Participants (22 -53 years old; 9 women, 6 men) had experienced the disappearance or prolonged uncertainty regarding the fate of their spouse, child, sibling, or relative an

Causal Conceptions in Social Explanation and Moral Evaluation: A Historical Tour.

Understanding the causes of human behavior is essential for advancing one's interests and for coordinating social relations. The scientific study of how people arrive at such understandings or explanations has unfolded in four distinguishable epochs in psychology, each characterized by a different metaphor that researchers have used to represent how people think as they attribute causality and blame to other individuals. The first epoch was guided by an "intuitive scientist" metaphor, which emphasized whether observers perceived behavior to be caused by the unique tendencies of the actor or by

The Psychological Impact Among Syrian Refugees in Host Countries.

Background: Refugees face numerous challenges, including conflict, displacement, family separation, human rights violations, limited access to basic needs, and exposure to violence and torture. These experiences significantly impact their psychological well-being, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Syrian refugees in Jordan may experience higher levels of depression and anxiety than those in Spain due to harsher living conditions, limited economic opportunities, uncertain legal status, inadequate mental health services, and ongoing proximity to the Syrian conflict, whereas r

Living through the war in Gaza: An autoethnographic account of psychological, humanitarian, and physical suffering of Gaza's inhabitants during the war in Gaza.

INTRODUCTION: This paper presents an autoethnography from a Gaza-based scholar who documents, in real time, the war's effects on himself and his family. It situates a personal trajectory-bombardments, repeated displacement, injury, bereavement, and the collapse of essential services-within the broader humanitarian emergency, arguing that first-person evidence is indispensable to grasp lived experience and cumulative harm. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an autoethnographic case-study design, the author combines contemporaneous field notes, direct observations across hospitals and shelters, and f

Depression and the risk of developing temporomandibular disorders in different diagnostic groups: A systematic review with meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of depression in the development of TMD groups. METHODS: This systematic review with meta-analysis compared the prevalence and scores of depression between TMD groups and controls. RESULTS: The results showed that depression was a significant risk factor in the development of RDC/TMD axis I muscle disorders (group I) and arthralgia/osteoarthritis/osteoarthrosis (group III), and non-significant for disc displacements (group II). Severe depression had almost four times the risk of developing TMD as compared to moderate depression. CONCLUSION: These findings sug

On the displacement of leisure items by food during multiple-stimulus preference assessments.

Previous studies have demonstrated that when food and leisure stimuli are combined in multiple-stimulus preference assessments, individuals typically select food more often, although the leisure stimuli also have known reinforcing properties. The purpose of the current study was to replicate this effect and determine its durability by examining the effect after mealtimes. Four adults who had been diagnosed with severe mental retardation were given three initial multiple-stimulus (without replacement) preference assessments (i.e., food, leisure stimuli, and combined). All participants selected

Implementing scalable face-to-face and digital interventions among forcibly displaced persons from Ukraine in Europe: protocol of The U-RISE Project.

Background: The full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 has led to millions of forcibly displaced persons (FDPs) within Ukraine and other European countries. Due to war-related exposure and displacement adversities, this group is at significant risk of developing depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other mental health problems. Systemic barriers, including insufficiently equipped mental health systems and language barriers, prevent FDPs from receiving adequate mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS). Scalable interventions delivered in person by n

Assessing housing and basic services access for internally displaced persons in conflict-affected Gaza Strip: a mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: The Gaza Strip's protracted conflict has created a severe humanitarian crisis, leaving internally displaced persons (IDPs) with limited access to adequate housing and basic services. This study addresses a critical gap in understanding the housing and service disparities experienced by IDPs in Gaza, aiming to inform targeted policy interventions. METHODS: A mixed-methods approach was employed, integrating quantitative and qualitative data collection. A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 400 IDP households selected through stratified random sampling across the five governora

The importance of cultural understanding and practical solutions during the handover of a psychotherapy and psychotraumatology program in Northern Iraq into local hands.

In post war regions, especially in low-income countries, the health care systems often require immediate support. For example, after the terror of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in 2014, many internally displaced persons took refuge in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI). Those displaced by war have had to face the reality that psychotherapy did not exist as a service in the Kurdish health system. Many projects and Non-Government-Organizations (NGOs) that work in post-conflict regions focus on short term and quick response and/or basic psychological services. The implement

Feasibility and acceptability of Problem Management Plus with Emotional Processing (PM+EP) for refugee youth living in the Netherlands: study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Refugee youth experience hardships associated with exposure to trauma in their homelands and during and after displacement, which results in higher rates of common mental disorders. The World Health Organization (WHO) developed Problem Management Plus (PM+), a non-specialist-delivered brief psychological intervention, for individuals who have faced adversity. PM+ comprises problem-solving, stress management, behavioural activation and strengthening social support. However, it does not include an emotional processing component, which is indicated in trauma-exposed populations. OBJE

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill: the trauma signature of an ecological disaster.

The 2010 Deepwater Horizon “British Petroleum (BP)” oil spill was a mega-disaster characterized as the petroleum industry’s largest-volume marine oil spill in history. Following a “wellhead blowout” that destroyed the drilling platform, 4.9 million barrels of petroleum flowed into the Gulf of Mexico over 87 days and the spill expanded to cover 68,000 square miles of sea surface. However, despite the expansive scope of the event, systematic surveys of affected coastal populations found only modest effects on mental health and substance abuse. An established trauma signature (TSIG) methodology w

Beyond the clinic: The role of the psychiatrist in practicing pragmatic solidarity.

Psychiatrists are trained to evaluate biological, psychological, and social dimensions of illness simultaneously, yet the dominant frameworks governing psychiatric practice remain oriented toward individual symptom management rather than the structural conditions that produce these symptoms. This essay argues that psychiatrists working in global mental health contexts carry an ethical obligation that extends beyond diagnosis and treatment: to practice what Paul Farmer termed pragmatic solidarity, the practice of standing alongside communities to address the upstream drivers of mental distress

AI-Mediated Mental Health Support: The Role of Attachment Orientation and Psychological Distress.

General-purpose generative AI (GenAI) models are increasingly serving as quasi-social agents, representing a novel form of informal AI-mediated help-seeking. This study examined associations between adult attachment orientations (Experiences in Close Relationships-Relationship Structures questionnaire), psychological distress (Depression Anxiety Stress Scales-21), and the use of GenAI for mental health support. In a nonprobability sample of 584 Israeli adult GenAI users, 29.3 percent reported having turned to these models at least once for emotional support, coping advice, or mental health ass

Geopolitical rhetoric as a potential psychological stressor: A conceptual review of mechanisms linking political discourse and population mental health.

Although the mental health consequences of armed conflict, displacement, and climate-related disasters are well documented, the psychological effects of geopolitical rhetoric itself (independent of material events) remain insufficiently examined. This narrative review provides a conceptual and interdisciplinary synthesis of emerging and heterogeneous evidence on how threat-oriented political narratives may influence population mental health through indirect, mediated, and context-dependent pathways. The reviewed literature suggests convergent patterns across five thematic areas: symbolic threa

Oral behaviors and anxiety are significant predictors of jaw function limitation in patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe jaw function characteristics in patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDWoR) using the jaw function limitation scale (JFLS), and to investigate the effects of biopsychosocial risk factors on limited jaw function. DESIGN: In this cross-sectional study of 636 patients with ADDWoR (females, 568; males, 68), we used the JFLS to assess jaw function. Behavioral, psychological, sociodemographic, and biomedical data were collected. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to determine risk factors affecting limited jaw function. A recei

A moving heart: querying a singular problem of 'immobility' in Afghan migration to the UK.

This article offers a single case study of everyday suffering (khapgan--Pakhto; "feeling down") experienced by one Afghan migrant in the United Kingdom, Zmarai. Single cases may destabilize categories of the political as conventionally institutionalized in relation to Afghan migrants according to such concepts as diaspora, citizenship, refugees, trauma, and culture, etc. Drawing theorizations of the way affects are key to a political economy's analysis of migrant labor ('a moving heart'), the study moves away from political or psychological categories centered on the trauma of war and displace
