A 7 3-year-old man with angiosarcoma was treated with concurrent chemoradiotherapy, using docetaxel (25mg/m(2) weekly). While the size of the tumor reduced rapidly, fluid retention, considered as an adverse effect of docetaxel, appeared at the cumulative dose of 325mg/m(2). He required chest drainage for prolonged pleural effusion. Though fluid retention due to docetaxel is infrequently reported in Japan, it may lead to severe illness and require discontinuation of chemotherapy. When we administer docetaxel over a prolonged period, we should be aware of this adverse effect.

Docetaxel is a commonly-used anti-cancer chemotherapeutic agent given its efficacy in a large variety of solid tumors. It is associated with various adverse effects one of which is nail toxicity. We report a case of severe onycholysis as a result of treatment with docetaxel in a patient who suffered from metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The case report will be followed by a discussion on the possible mechanism and preventive strategies for taxane-induced nail toxicity.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of docetaxel and capecitabine combination in the treatment of anthracycline-resistant advanced breast carcinoma.
METHODS: Forty-three patients with anthracycline-resistant advanced breast carcinoma were treated with docetaxel combined with capecitabine between January 2002 and November 2004. Docetaxel was administered intravenously at a dose of 75 mg/m(2) on D1, and oral intake of capecitabine at a dose of 1600 mg/d on D1 to D14, every 21 days as a cycle.
