Skeletal abnormalities in domestic chicken.

In 14,891 necropsies performed on domestic poultry during January 1976 to October 1977, two cases of skeletal abnormalities were found. One was a tarsometatarsal spur in an adult female chicken, and the other was a crossed-beak associated with microphthalmia.

Screening for domestic violence in Jordan: validation of an Arabic version of a domestic violence against women questionnaire.

OBJECTIVES: Abuse against women causes a great deal of suffering for the victims and is a major public health problem. Measuring lifetime abuse is a complicated task; the various methods that are used to measure abuse can cause wide variations in the reported occurrences of abuse. Furthermore, the estimated prevalence of abuse also depends on how abuse is culturally defined. Researchers currently lack a validated Arabic language instrument that is also culturally tailored to Arab and Middle Eastern populations. Therefore, it is important to develop and evaluate psychometric properties of an Ar

Supporting Children Who Experience Domestic Violence: Evaluating the Child Witness to Domestic Violence Program.

Impacting 1 in 4 children in the United States, childhood exposure to domestic violence predicts myriad negative sequelae. Intervening post exposure is critical to help children and their protective parent heal and avoid long-term negative consequences. Children aged 2-17 and their mothers who were victims of domestic violence participated in a 12-week group program delivered by domestic violence agency staff that provides psychoeducation on the impact of trauma and domestic violence and aims to improve parent and child well-being. The impact of the Child Witness to Domestic Violence (CWDV) pr

Should hut lung be called domestically acquired particulate lung disease or domestically acquired pneumoconiosis?

Indoor air pollution appears to be a major environmental and public health hazard for large numbers of the underdeveloped world's population. A detailed environmental history is important for making diagnosis in most individuals from foreign rural settings with nonspecific respiratory symptoms. In this report, we describe an illustrative case of domestically acquired particulate lung disease (DAPLD) or "hut lung" in a 65-year-old Sudanese male who immigrated to the United States in 1986. He presented with symptoms of chronic productive cough and dyspnea. Imaging and pathology from transbronchi

Haplotype-resolved T2T genome and population resequencing provide insights into the domestication and mogroside biosynthesis of Siraitia grosvenorii (Cucurbitaceae).

Monk fruit (Siraitia grosvenorii, Cucurbitaceae) is globally renowned for its triterpenoid glycoside mogroside V, a high-intensity, non-caloric natural sweetener. However, its domestication and mogroside biosynthesis remain largely unknown. Here, we report a haplotype-resolved telomere-to-telomere (T2T) gapless genome for monk fruit, consisting of 14 chromosomes with genome sizes of 316.21 Mb (Hap1) and 316.07 Mb (Hap2). Comparative genomic analyses of the haplotypes revealed that structural variations and transposable elements have significantly contributed to genomic variation and architectu…

Domestication shapes the gut microbial structure and metabolic function in felids: a metagenomic study of wild and domestic cats.

INTRODUCTION: The domestication process has profoundly altered the dietary patterns and living conditions of cats, with corresponding effects on their gut microbiome. METHODS: This study compared the gut microbiota composition and metabolic functions between wild felids (Otocolobus manul and Felis bieti) and domestic cats using metagenomic sequencing. RESULTS: Taxonomic analysis revealed significantly higher microbial alpha diversity and distinct community structure in wild felids compared to domestic cats. The gut microbiota of domestic cats was characterized by a higher relative abundance …

Population-specific transcriptomic shifts underlie secondary metabolic diversification in Aspergillus flavus Link and the domestication of Aspergillus oryzae (Ahlb.).

The genomic signatures of microbial domestication remain poorly understood within the context of natural population variation. Here, we demonstrate that Aspergillus oryzae, the filamentous fungus used in soy sauce and sake production, shares more recent ancestry with a predominantly northern, largely non-aflatoxigenic population of Aspergillus flavus (population C). A. oryzae isolates also overlap with the recently described, clinically enriched A. flavus population D, suggesting multiple domestication events. All isolates tested retained pathogenicity in a zebrafish infection model. At the tr…

Analysis of ancient and modern horse genomes reveals the critical impact of lncRNA-mediated epigenetic regulation on horse domestication.

Background: The domestication of horses has played critical roles in human civilizations. The excavation of ancient horse DNA provides crucial data for studying horse domestication. Studies of horse domestication can shed light on the general mechanisms of animal domestication. Objective: We wish to explore the gene transcription regulation by long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) that influence horse domestication. Methods: First, we assembled the ancient DNA sequences of multiple horses at different times and the genomes of horses, donkeys, and Przewalski horses. Second, we extracted sequences of ln…

Deep seeding resistance in maize: selected after domestication or a strategy of its wild ancestors to escape underground animal burrowing?

Buried seeds avoid predation ensuring their survival until conditions are suitable for germination. The ability of seedlings to emerge from … ing organs and whether deep-planting resistance is an ancestral trait in Zea or evolved after maize domestication. To determine the skotomorphogenic patterns in the subtribe Tripsacinae, deep planting trials were conducted with representatives belonging to the genera Zea and Tripsacum and the length or number of seedling organs measured. The majority of maize s …

Effects of domestication and captive breeding on reaction to moving objects: implications for avoidance behaviours of masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou.

Domestication and captive breeding can compromise the obstacle- and predator-avoidance capabilities of animals in the wild. Whereas previous studies only examined these effects in combination, here we examine them individually by comparing the abilities of wild, F1 (offspring of wild parents) and captive-bred (approx. F15) masu salmon Oncorhynchus masou to avoid a falling object under experimental conditions. Rates of avoidance failure were low (wild, 12.5%; F1, 10.7%; captive-bred, 8%) under light conditions, but increased under dark conditions (wild, 11.1%; F1, 32.1%; captive-bred, 60.0%). W…

Investigating the impact of captivity and domestication on limb bone cortical morphology: an experimental approach using a wild boar model.

The lack of bone morphological markers associated with the human control of wild animals has prevented the documentation of incipient animal domestication in archaeology. Here, we assess whether direct environmental changes (i.e. mobility reduction) could immediately affect ontogenetic changes in long bone structure, providing a skeletal marker of early domestication. We relied on a wild boar experimental model, analysing 24 wild-born specimens raised in captivity from 6 months to 2 years old. The shaft cortical thickness of their humerus was measured using a 3D morphometric mapping approach a…

Diversity of domestic and imported assemblages of Giardia in Norway and multi-locus sequence typing of domestic assemblage A isolates.

Giardia duodenalis is a gastrointestinal parasite and one of the most frequently reported parasitic infections associated with contaminated water. This study investigated the diversity of domestic and imported Giardia assemblages in Norway, with a focus on the genetic characterization of domestic assemblage A isolates using multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) targeting six genome markers. We analysed 340 human, and 40 animal faecal samples collected between February 2022 and January 2024 from six medical microbiology laboratories and one veterinary diagnostic center across four Norwegian health
