The risk factors for potential opioid misuse and abuse in patients receiving long-term opioid pain treatment have been a topic of interest in research for many years. There are differences among patients who receive long-term opioid pain treatment. These differences may or may not lead to opioid misuse. This study analyzes the different characteristics and predictors of prescription pain reliever misuse among respondents of the United States 2017 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. It examines the relationships of age, gender, income, perception of risk and availability of heroin, past sub

BACKGROUND: Most research on prescription drug misuse (PDM) focuses on the misuse of specific classes of psychoactive prescription drugs among adolescents or young adults. The current research addressed important gaps in the literature by assessing poly-prescription drug misuse (poly-PDM), the misuse of more than one class of psychoactive prescription drug, across different adult age cohorts.
METHODS: We used the 2015-2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health to examine the prevalence of past-year poly-PDM and specific combinations of PDM. Multinomial logistic regression was used to identif

Substance misuse and drug diversion among anesthesiology professionals may begin during training and span decades of practice. Because treatment for substance use disorder (SUD) is often delayed, early recognition and structured education are essential. This national quality improvement study evaluated the effect on knowledge, perceptions, and the likelihood of reporting suspected substance misuse. A descriptive, comparative pre-post survey was conducted with resident registered nurse anesthetists and support people recruited from 32 randomly selected U.S. nurse anesthesia programs. The interv

Sedative-hypnotic drugs (SHDs) carry significant risks of misuse and dependence. However, current institutional pharmacovigilance relies heavily on passive reporting, leading to substantial underreporting and data gaps. This study aimed to develop and conduct a pilot evaluation of an electronic trigger-based active surveillance model integrated into a Hospital Information System (HIS) to proactively identify high-risk prescription patterns and suspected SHD dependence. This two-phase study was conducted at a tertiary hospital. First, a retrospective analysis of 16,609 outpatient prescriptions

OBJECTIVE: Despite dramatic increases in the misuse of prescription opioids, the extent to which their intravenous injection places drug users at risk of acquiring hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains unclear. We sought to compare risk of HCV acquisition from injection of prescription opioids to that from other street drugs among high-risk street youth.
DESIGN: Prospective cohort study.
SETTING: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada from September 2005 to November 2011.
PARTICIPANTS: The At-Risk Youth Study (ARYS) is a prospective cohort of drug-using adolescents and young adults aged 14-26 years.

BACKGROUND: Studies showing high rates of alcohol and drug misuse and deliberate self-harm in bulimia nervosa have led some authors to call for a distinct diagnostic subgroup, sometimes termed "multi-impulsive bulimia". However, these studies have been uncontrolled and of clinic samples and may be subject to sampling bias.
METHOD: One hundred and two women with DSM-III-R bulimia nervosa were compared with 204 normal controls and 102 controls with other psychiatric disorders, all recruited from the same community sample. Interview measures were used for diagnosis and for the assessment of alco

BACKGROUND: The most recent guidelines on prescribing opioids from the United States Centers for Disease Control recommend that clinicians not prescribe opioids as first-line therapy for chronic non-cancer pain. If an opioid prescription is considered for a patient already on opioids, prescribers are encouraged to check the statewide prescription drug monitoring database (PDMP). Some additional guidelines recommend screening tools such as the Current Opioid Misuse Measure (COMM) which may also help identify drug-aberrant behaviors.
OBJECTIVE: To compare the PDMP and the Current Opioid Misuse

Key occupational groups in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are at increased risk of HIV, and may be at increased risk of substance use. In January 2018, we systematically searched for studies reporting prevalence of, and risk factors for alcohol misuse or illicit drug use and their association with HIV incidence or prevalence among fisherfolk, uniformed personnel, truckers, miners, motorcycle taxi riders and sex workers in SSA. Seventy-one studies published between 1983 and 2017 were included: 35 reported on alcohol misuse (19 using AUDIT, 5 using CAGE) and 44 on illicit drug use (eight reported both

BACKGROUND: Benzodiazepines are the third most commonly misused drugs in the U.S.
POPULATION: There is a growing public health concern related to recent increases in benzodiazepine-related overdose deaths, emergency department visits, and treatment admissions. Although benzodiazepine misuse often occurs along with other drug use, little is known about the association between benzodiazepine and cigarette smoking.
METHODS: We used a pooled dataset from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) for 2015-2018 (N = 171,766). We estimated a multivariable logistic regression model of past-

BACKGROUND: This study examined the prevalence of sedative/tranquilizer misuse among university students and its associations with psychosocial correlates.
METHODS: Nine thousand four hundred forty-nine students received a 156-item anonymous online survey, which assessed the use of prescription sedative/tranquilizer (ever or past year), alcohol and drug use, mental health issues, and impulsive and compulsive traits. Sedative/tranquilizer misuse was defined as intake of these prescription drugs by individuals who had not been prescribed them.
RESULTS: Three thousand five hundred twenty-five u

BACKGROUND: In the United States, prescription opioid misuse (POM) has increased dramatically over the past two decades. However, there are still questions regarding whether rural/urban differences in adult POM exist, and more important, which factors might be driving these differences.
METHODS: Using data from the 2011 and 2012 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we conducted unadjusted and adjusted binary logistic regression analyses to determine the association between metropolitan status and POM.
RESULTS: We found that urban adults were more likely to engage in POM compared to rural

Individuals who have developed a clinical dependence on drugs and/or alcohol often report that they sought help because they were "sick and tired of being sick and tired." Quality of life (QOL) remains the missing measurement in the addictions arena. The few studies conducted to date show that QOL is typically poor during active addiction and improves as a function of remission. An intriguing question bears on the role of QOL in subsequent remission status. Reasoning that higher life satisfaction may "increase the price" of future use and thus enhance the likelihood of sustained remission, thi
