Pilot of a Pediatric Palliative Care Early Intervention Instrument.

Current research demonstrates that pediatric symptom management care is often initiated in the late stages of disease once clinicians are no longer able to meaningfully impact symptom burden. Given that physicians or nurse practitioners are responsible for initiating palliative care referrals, it is incumbent upon registered nurses to advocate when improved symptom management care is needed. The pediatric palliative care screening instrument pilot provides a centralized instrument to document and quantify a patient's symptom profile, giving registered nurses the opportunity to objectively comm

Pivotal response treatment for preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder: Defining a predictor profile.

UNLABELLED: Behavioral characteristics of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) who respond positively to Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) have been described previously, based on single-subject design research. The present study examined several such characteristics, as well as positive affect, as predictors of expressive language (EL) gains in a representative sample of preschoolers with ASD (n = 57) enrolled in a PRT-based community early intervention program. Children's cognitive ability, positive affect, and levels of appropriate toy contact measured at the start of intervention ea

[Prevention of dyslexia – short-term and intermediate effects of promoting phonological awareness and letter-sound correspondence with at-risk preschool children].

OBJECTIVE: This study assesses the short-term and intermediate effects of preschool training stimulating phonological awareness and letter-sound correspondence for children at risk of developing dyslexia. Moreover, we examined whether training reduced the frequency of subsequent dyslexic problems. METHOD: 25 children at risk of developing dyslexia were trained with Hören, Lauschen, Lernen 1 und 2 (Küspert & Schneider, 2008; Plume & Schneider, 2004) by their kindergarten teachers and were compared with 60 untrained at-risk children. RESULTS: The training revealed a significant short-term effe

[A case of abscess of corpus cavernosum as an early symptom of penile pyodermal gangrenosum: we propose the possibility of a new pathogenic finding].

A 76-year-old man with a mass on the penis and a pain during nighttime erection was referred to our institution. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging showed a high-intensity area in the dorsal part of corpus cavernosum. We diagnosed him with the abscess of corpus cavernosum. Surgical drainage and chemotherapy had been performed for 3 years. However, it recurred consistently and developed several cutaneous draining fistulae. The abscess culture was sterile. Skin biopsy revealed a diagnosis of penile pyoderma gangrenosum, which was treated successfully with prednisolone and an immunosuppressiv

A transactional model of spoken vocabulary variation in toddlers with intellectual disabilities.

PURPOSE: The authors examined (a) whether dose frequency of milieu communication teaching (MCT) affects children's canonical syllabic communication and (b) whether the relation between early canonical syllabic communication and later spoken vocabulary is mediated by parental linguistic mapping in children with intellectual disabilities (ID). METHOD: The authors drew on extant data from a recent differential treatment intensity study in which 63 toddlers with ID were randomly assigned to receive either five 1-hr MCT sessions per week (i.e., daily treatment) or one 1-hr MCT session per week (i.

Preventive interventions for ADHD: a neurodevelopmental perspective.

It is proposed that the time is ripe for the development of secondary preventive interventions for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). By targeting preschool children, a developmental stage during which ADHD symptoms first become evident in most children with the disorder, many of the adverse long-term consequences that typify the trajectory of ADHD may be avoided. A dynamic/interactive model of the biological and environmental factors that contribute to the emergence and persistence of ADHD throughout the lifespan is proposed. Based on this model, it is argued that environmental

Care for child development: basic science rationale and effects of interventions.

The past few years have witnessed increasing interest in devising programs to enhance early childhood development. We review current understandings of brain development, recent advances in this field, and their implications for clinical interventions. An expanding body of basic science laboratory data demonstrates that several interventions, including environmental enrichment, level of parental interaction, erythropoietin, antidepressants, transcranial magnetic stimulation, transcranial direct current stimulation, hypothermia, nutritional supplements, and stem cells, can enhance cerebral plast

Effectiveness of early intervention and prediction of outcomes in taiwanese children with developmental delay.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: In the 1990s, the Taiwanese government introduced a nationwide program for enhancing the development of children with developmental delay (DD) at the earliest point. As a part of this program, children with suspected DD or those at a risk of DD are referred to child assessment centers, where they undergo comprehensive multidisciplinary assessments (MDAs) using standardized screening tools to determine their developmental status. This study investigated the correlation between developmental outcomes and child-level factors by using serial MDA data, and we also aimed to devel

Autism Early Intervention Providers: Their Priorities, Use of Empirically Supported Practices, and Professional Development Needs.

PURPOSE: Autism early intervention research has indicated a research-to-practice gap, including continued use of practices with inadequate research support, and insufficient use of empirically supported practices. The present study explored the processes and mechanisms through which providers working with young children on the autism spectrum learn, select, and implement the various practices in their clinical repertoires. We addressed the role of providers' priorities, competence, and experience with (and needs for) professional development (PD), as well as whether, in clinical practice, a pr

Early Intervention for Children With Cleft Palate: First Report on the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence at Age Four.

In recent years, the necessity of early intervention in speech therapy for children with cleft palate has become widely recognized. To achieve more effective treatment outcomes through comprehensive early intervention, we launched an Early Intervention Program (EI Program) in 2010 at the Department of Speech and Orofacial Function Development, Aichi Gakuin University Dental Hospital. As part of a series of studies to evaluate the effectiveness of the EI Program, the present study aimed to examine the relationship between participation in the EI Program and cognitive development in children wit

Multidimensional profiles of Head Start children's social behaviors predict their interpretations of physical aggression.

Preschool children's reasoning regarding moral events differs according to adversity and relates to aggression. Understanding morality in young children is paramount for understanding their aggressive behaviors. The study aims to identify patterns of aggression and prosocial behavior using Latent Class Analysis (LCA) and investigate how patterns of aggression and prosocial behavior relate to reasoning about prototypic moral events. One hundred six children (Mage  = 4.40 years old, SD = 0.55 years old, Range: 3.08-5.33 years old, 51% boys) enrolled in Head Start programs and their caregivers pa

Working with linguistically diverse families in early intervention: misconceptions and missed opportunities.

Traditionally, speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and other professionals have held the belief that children with speech and language disabilities are unable to successfully learn more than one language. It is often automatically assumed that exposing young children to two languages will cause confusion and significant delays in the learning of any language. Because of this belief, many families have been influenced to give up their home language in their efforts to ensure their child's successful learning of English. Yet it has been documented that children who are learning two languages sim

Tracking preschool children with developmental delay: third grade outcomes.

Educational outcomes were evaluated for 2,046 preschool children identified with developmental delay. Results indicated that at third grade, 26% were in regular education and the remaining 74% were receiving special education services. The most common disability classifications at outcome were specific learning disabilities and educable mentally handicaps. Regular education, but not special education, children had higher retention rates than did the general population. The presence of one or more secondary exceptionalities in preschool was more common for special education than regular educati
