[Aplasia of the premolars as a leading symptom of ectodermal dysplasia].

The primary symptom in the tooth system, a tendency toward aplasia of the bicuspid teeth in both dentition periods, was reported for an ectodermal syndrome which has seldom been described. In agreement with the observation by BOOK (1950), we also observed excessive perspiration (hyperhidrosis) and premature graying of the scalp hair (canities prematura). The syndrome, which is limited to ectodermal disturbances, is a dominant trait, the incidence of which is apparently higher in Northern European countries. Trigeminal neuralgias seem to appear in conjunction with this genetic disturbance. Comp

Ectodermal Dysplasia: Association with Anti-Basement Membrane Autoantibodies.

Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a group of several genetic conditions with absence or dysgenesis of at least two ectodermal derivatives: teeth, skin and its appendages including hair, nails, eccrine and sebaceous glands. The most important clinical findings in patients with ED are hypodontia, hypotrichosis, and hypohidrosis, which can lead to episodes of hyperthermia. Few reports have focused on the progressive keratopathy in ED. Cicatrizing conjunctivitis associated with anti-basement membrane autoantibodies has been described. We report a series of three ectodermal dysplasia patients with an oc

Prenatal Correction of X-Linked Hypohidrotic Ectodermal Dysplasia.

Genetic deficiency of ectodysplasin A (EDA) causes X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (XLHED), in which the development of sweat glands is irreversibly impaired, an condition that can lead to life-threatening hyperthermia. We observed normal development of mouse fetuses with Eda mutations after they had been exposed in utero to a recombinant protein that includes the receptor-binding domain of EDA. We administered this protein intraamniotically to two affected human twins at gestational weeks 26 and 31 and to a single affected human fetus at gestational week 26; the infants, born in we

Trichoscopic Hair Evaluation in Patients with Ectodermal Dysplasia.

Hair abnormalities in ectodermal dysplasia may be difficult to identify. Among 16 patients with ectodermal dysplasia trichoscopy (hair dermoscopy) revealed predominance of pilosebaceous units with 1 hair (69%), abnormalities of hair shaft pigmentation (gray hair with single dark hairs, 56%), pili torti, trichothiodystrophy, trichorrhexis nodosa, and rarely, cicatricial alopecia.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip and palate syndrome.

Ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-cleft (EEC) syndrome is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the triad of ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia, and facial clefting along with some associated features. Presence of all the three major features in a single individual is extremely rare. We report a case of 4 year 11 months old child with EEC syndrome having ectodermal dysplasia-cleft lip and cleft palate and ectrodactyly with some associated features. Clinical features, diagnosis and role of a dentist in the multidisciplinary treatment approach have been elaborated in this case report.

Psychoeducational characteristics of children with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

OBJECTIVE: Hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is an X-linked hereditary disorder characterized by hypohidrosis, hypotrichosis, and anomalous dentition. Estimates of up to 50% of affected children having intellectual disability are controversial. METHOD: In a cross-sectional study, 45 youth with HED (77% males, mean age 9.75 years) and 59 matched unaffected controls (70% males, mean age 9.79 years) were administered the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test and the Kaufman Test of Educational Achievement, and their parents completed standardized neurodevelopmental and behavioral measures, educa

An unusual ectodermal dysplasia with unique eye defects.

We report a 12-year-old boy with dental, auricular, nasolacrimal duct and unique eyelid anomalies as well as cribriform scrotal atrophy. We believe this is the first description of such a case, although many of the features fit within the spectrum of the ankyloblepharon/ectodermal dysplasia/clefting (AEC) syndrome.

Ophthalmic manifestations of ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting syndrome.

Ophthalmic manifestations are a common component of the ectrodactyly-ectodermal dysplasia-clefting (EEC) syndrome; however, few ophthalmic publications have specifically addressed these features. The authors describe a 38-year-old patient with EEC syndrome who demonstrated several associated ocular signs and symptoms. The ophthalmic findings in this patient included bilateral entropion with secondary trichiasis, and shallow inferior fornices with symblepharon. Interestingly, the patient also had vertically deficient tarsi and absence of the meibomian glands. Ophthalmologists should be aware of

[Ectodermal dysplasia: multiple manifestations of a hereditary disease].

Ectodermal dysplasia is a hereditary disease that can manifest itself in many ways. Four cases, including two cases involving heterozygote twins, are presented. The clinical signs of the disease, as observed are compared to the knowledge offered in the classic and modern literature. Special attention is given to the intraoral manifestations of the disease, and to the solutions that a multidisciplinary dental team could consider to improve the masticatory function and the facial esthetics of patients affected by this disease.

Ectodermal dysplasia: literature review and a case report.

Ectodermal dysplasia is a group of rare inherited disorders that affect various tissues of ectodermal origin. The mode of inheritance varies among the different disorders. The most common form of ectodermal dysplasia is hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED), which most severely affects the hair, nails, teeth, and skin. Men are more often and more severely affected than women. However, transmission is from the female carrier, who usually appears normal and unaffected. Dental treatment for these patients varies on an individual basis. This article illustrates a case of overdentures in a 7-year

"New" ectodermal dysplasia with mental retardation and syndactyly.

We describe a girl with an unusual form of ectodermal dysplasia. She was mildly mentally retarded, had normal height, weight, and head circumference, a large scalp defect, a peculiar face with large palpebral fissures, a broad nasal bridge and constantly open mouth, abnormally-modeled ears, syndactyly of fingers/toes, mild hypohidrosis, and severe onychogryposis. Her hair was short, abundant, and stiff, her eyebrows were sparse, and her skin was dry. Analysis of the literature showed that this type of association of ectodermal dysplasia and other defects has not been previously described.

Clinical aspects of X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia.

Boys with X-linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and their families were studied. Many suffered severe illness in early childhood and nearly 30% died; many had feeding problems, severe fever, atopic disease, and recurrent respiratory infections. Some infants failed to thrive. We found no consistent common endocrine or immunological abnormality, although, most had abnormal immunoglobulin production. This may be related to the abnormal mucosa of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts which exacerbates the chronic obstructive airways disease found later in life in those who smoke. Mental
