Embedding e-learning in postgraduate medical education: system-level barriers and enablers in Hong Kong.

INTRODUCTION: E-learning is increasingly central to postgraduate medical education (PGME), yet system-level barriers may hinder its integration. In Hong Kong, the Academy of Medicine (HKAM) has invested in a learning management system and faculty development, but uptake among Academy Colleges remains uneven. This study examined barriers and enablers across Colleges to inform system-level implementation. METHODS: We used a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design. Phase 1 involved semi-structured interviews with one e-learning lead from each of the 13 participating Colleges, which were anal

Development of digital learning tools for medical education with agile scrum methodology.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of digital learning tools in medical education. However, there is little evidence exploring how or whether such tools are being developed for family medicine curricula. We provide a narrative analysis of how the University of Ottawa's Department of Family Medicine (DFM) developed innovative learning tools using an interdisciplinary, research-based approach and Agile Scrum Methodology. METHODS: In March 2020, the DFM created an interdisciplinary team to support development of digital tools for medical education. Members of the DF

International trial of online auditory training programme for distinguishing innocent and pathological murmurs.

AIM: Recognition of normal and abnormal heart sounds and murmurs is an important but declining clinical skill among practitioners. Current teaching methods are often ineffective. This may result from inadequate repetition and normal-abnormal comparisons needed for auditory recognition. This paper describes a rapid new method of teaching murmur recognition using principles of auditory training. METHODS: Participants were 120 Australian and 42 Canadian medical students. The medical students were randomised to intervention and control (no intervention) groups. The 1-h online programme structured

Designing tailored Web-based instruction to improve practicing physicians' chlamydial screening rates.

OBJECTIVE: To design an individualized Web-based continuing medical education (CME) program to improve practicing physicians' chlamydial screening rates. DESCRIPTION: Often unrecognized and untreated, chlamydial infections in young women may cause pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy and facilitate the acquisition of HIV. The National Committee for Quality Assurance in 2001 reported chlamydia screening rates to be 23.6% for 16-20-year-olds and 18.3% for 21-26-year-olds. In a collaborative project an academic medical center and a large national managed care organizat

Persuasive technology in teaching acute pain assessment in nursing: Results in learning based on pre and post-testing.

BACKGROUND: Thousands of patients seek health services every day with complaints of pain. However, adequate pain assessment is still flawed, a fact that is partly related to gaps in professional learning on this topic. Innovative strategies such as the use of a virtual learning object mediated by persuasive technology in the learning of undergraduate nursing students can help to fill these gaps and to provide different ways of learning to learn. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the results in learning among undergraduate nursing students about assessment of acute pain in adults and newborns, before and

Understanding neurophobia: Reasons behind impaired understanding and learning of neuroanatomy in cross-disciplinary healthcare students.

Recent studies have highlighted a fear or difficulty with the study and understanding of neuroanatomy among medical and healthcare students. This has been linked with a diminished confidence of clinical practitioners and students to manage patients with neurological conditions. The underlying reasons for this difficulty have been queried among a broad cohort of medical, dental, occupational therapy, and speech and language sciences students. Direct evidence of the students' perception regarding specific difficulties associated with learning neuroanatomy has been provided and some of the measur
