Venomics of the Duvernoy's gland secretion of the false coral snake Rhinobothryum bovallii (Andersson, 1916) and assessment of venom lethality towards synapsid and diapsid animal models.

The Duvernoy's gland secretory proteome of the false coral snake Rhinobothryum bovallii (Costa Rica), unveiled applying bottom-up venomics, … es that are of medical concern are predominantly from front-fanged snakes of families Viperidae and Elapidae. On the other hand, rear-fanged snakes have been conventionally considered non-venomous, and thus their venoms have remained a largely untapped area of venomics. However, increasing documentation of life-threadening, even fatal, envenomings from rea …

IDENTIFICATION OF HELODERMATID ADENOVIRUS 2 IN A CAPTIVE CENTRAL BEARDED DRAGON (POGONA VITTICEPS), WILD GILA MONSTERS (HELODERMA SUSPECTUM), AND A DEATH ADDER (ACANTHOPHIS ANTARCTICUS).

Adenoviruses are medium-sized DNA viruses with very high host fidelity. The phylogenetic relationships of the adenoviruses strongly resemble that of their hosts, consistent with evolutionary codivergence. The genus Atadenovirus appears to have evolved in squamate hosts. Perhaps the best known of the squamate adenoviruses is Agamid adenovirus 1 (AgAdV1), found most commonly in central bearded dragons (Pogona vitticeps), where it is a prevalent cause of hepatitis/enteritis, especially in young animals. All previous reports of adenoviruses in bearded dragons were AgAdV1. Helodermatid adenovirus 2

[Antivenom therapy after a black mamba snakebite].

A 24-year-old man was bitten on his right forefinger by his black mamba while he was feeding the animal. The primary symptoms caused by a full injection of the snake's venom therefore presented a life-threating situation. Due to pre-hospital troubleshooting of the emergency medical service and the timely administration of the antivenom further potentially harmful effects caused by the snakes venom were avoided.

Effect of temperature on fatty acid composition in each lipid fraction of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei plerocercoids.

The effects of temperature and host fatty acids on the fatty acid contents of Spirometra erinaceieuropaei plerocercoids were investigated to clarify their role in sparganosis. After 24 hr incubation at 18 C in host snake serum, omega6 series fatty acids, especially arachidonic acid in the phospholipid fraction of the plerocercoids, increased compared with those of plerocercoids incubated at 37 C. The changes in the ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids in the phospholipid fraction of plerocercoids incubated in physiological saline for 6 hr at 10 C were almost the same as the change

Analysis of snake venom composition and antimicrobial activity.

With the threat of a post-antibiotic era looming, the search for new and effective antibiotics from novel sources is imperative. Not only has crude snake venom been shown to be effective, but specific components within the venoms, such as Phospholipase A2s and l-amino acid oxidases have been isolated and demonstrated to be effective as well. Despite numerous studies being completed on snake venoms, there is a heavy bias towards utilizing the venoms from the highly toxic Elapidae and Viperidae species. Very few studies have been conducted on the less toxic, but taxonomically more diverse, Colub…

Quantitative proteomic analysis of Vietnamese krait venoms: Neurotoxins are the major components in Bungarus multicinctus and phospholipases A2 in Bungarus fasciatus.

Kraits are venomous snakes of genus Bungarus from family Elapidae. Krait venoms are generally neurotoxic, but toxicity strongly depends on the particular species and regional origin of snakes. We analyzed the proteomes of Vietnamese Bungarus multicinctus and Bungarus fasciatus venoms both qualitatively and quantitatively. It should be noted that no proteomic data for B. multicinctus venom existed so far. We have found that in this venom, almost half (45%) of the proteins by weight was represented by β-bungarotoxins, followed by three finger toxins (28%) and phospholipases A2 (16%), other prote…

New insights into the phylogeographic distribution of the 3FTx/PLA2 venom dichotomy across genus Micrurus in South America.

Micrurus is a monophyletic genus of venomous coral snakes of the family Elapidae. The ~80 recognized species within this genus are endemic to the Americas, and are distributed from southeastern United States to northern Argentina. Although relatively few bites are recorded due to their reclusive nature, semi-fossorial habits, and their occurrence in sparsely populated areas, coral snakes possess powerful venoms that target the cholinergic system and, if early treatment is missed, can cause neuromuscular paralysis, respiratory failure, and death by asphyxiation within hours of envenoming. The t…

Antigenic cross-reactivity and species-specific identification of Pseudocerastes persicus fieldi snake venom.

In the present study, we recognized progressively high immunological cross-reactivity between Pseudocerastes persicus fieldi (Pf) venom and six other medically important Egyptian snake venoms belonging to families Viperidae and Elapidae. Antibodies with a range of bonding strengths were shown to be involved in such cross-reactivity. Two strategies have been tried to access specificity; (i) using affinity purified species-specific anti-Pf antivenom antibodies, (ii) conducting the assay in the presence of ammonium thiocyanate (NH4SCN). The discrimination power of the prepared species-specific an…

Identification of poorly immunodepleted phospholipase A2 (PLA2) proteins of Bungarus fasciatus venom from Assam, India and evaluation of Indian polyvalent antivenom using third-generation antivenomics.

Bungarus fasciatus also referred to as the Banded krait is a snake which possesses venom and belongs to the Elapidae family. It is widely distributed across the Indian subcontinent and South East Asian countries and is responsible for numerous snakebites in the population. B. fasciatus possesses a neurotoxic venom and envenomation by the snake results in significant morbidity and occasional morbidity in the victim if not treated appropriately. In this study, the efficacy of Indian polyvalent antivenom (Premium Serums polyvalent antivenom) was evaluated against the venom of B. fasciatus from Gu…

Micrurus snake venoms activate human complement system and generate anaphylatoxins.

BACKGROUND: The genus Micrurus, coral snakes (Serpentes, Elapidae), comprises more than 120 species and subspecies distributed from the south United States to the south of South America. Micrurus snake bites can cause death by muscle paralysis and further respiratory arrest within a few hours after envenomation. Clinical observations show mainly neurotoxic symptoms, although other biological activities have also been experimentally observed, including cardiotoxicity, hemolysis, edema and myotoxicity. RESULTS: In the present study we have investigated the action of venoms from seven species of…

X Marks the Clot: Evolutionary and Clinical Implications of Divergences in Procoagulant Australian Elapid Snake Venoms.

Australian elapid snakes possess potent procoagulant venoms, capable of inducing severe venom-induced consumption coagulopathy (VICC) in snakebite victims through rapid activation of the coagulation cascade by converting the FVII and prothrombin zymogens into their active forms. These venoms fall into two mechanistic categories: FXa-only venoms, which hijack host factor Va, and FXa:FVa venoms, containing a complete venom-derived prothrombinase complex. While previous studies have largely focused on human plasma, the ecological and evolutionary drivers behind prey-selective venom efficacy remai
