Transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) for acute low back pain: systematic review.

Background and aims There has been no comprehensive evaluation of the efficacy of transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) for acute low back pain (LBP). The aim of this systematic review was to investigate the efficacy and safety of TENS for acute LBP. Methods We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, CENTRAL, CINAHL and PsycINFO (inception to May 2018) for randomised placebo controlled trials. The primary outcome measure was pain relief in the immediate term (within 2-weeks of administration) assessed using the 100 mm visual analogue scale. A mean differen

Electric field navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation for chronic tinnitus: A pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) has shown potential in reducing tinnitus symptoms. We evaluated effects of electric field (E-field) navigated rTMS targeted neuroanatomically according to tinnitus pitch. DESIGN: In this open methodological pilot study, the patients received E-field navigated 1-Hz rTMS in daily treatment sessions to the left superior temporal gyrus, targeted according to tonotopic representation of their individual tinnitus pitch. Patients rated their tinnitus intensity and annoyance with a numeric rating scale (NRS) from 0 to 10 at the baseline a

Electric pulse stimulation induces NMDA glutamate receptor mRNA in NIH3T3 mouse fibroblasts.

Excess glutamate and Ca(2+) influx into neurons exacerbate brain damage such as ischemia. Astrocytes at the site of damage proliferate and attenuate the glutamate- and Ca(2+)-induced neuronal damage by removing excess glutamate and Ca(2+) through the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor and the L-type Ca(2+) channel, respectively. Fibroblasts are commonly mobilized to the site of damage, probably supporting the restoration process. Notably, fibroblasts express the L-type voltage-sensitive Ca(2+) channel, but not central nervous system-specific NMDA glutamate receptor. We examined if

Electric stimulation approaches to the restoration and rehabilitation of swallowing: a review.

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of interest in the use of electric stimulation for the treatment of swallowing disorders. This review explores both the rationale and existing evidence for electric stimulation approaches to swallowing rehabilitation. Although this is an exciting area of research which holds promise for future clinically relevant technology and/or therapy, a critical analysis of the existing literature will be presented to support the argument that implementation of electric stimulation in clinical swallowing rehabilitation settings still remains pre-mature.

[Transcutaneous electric muscle stimulation--a "new" possibility for the prevention of thrombosis?].

Adhesive electrodes for transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the calf were applied on the skin of 11 patients with ruptures of the fibular ligaments (treated surgically or conservatively with cast) during the period of immobilisation (four weeks). Muscle stimulations were performed several times a day over a period of at least 15 minutes with a small rechargable muscle stimulation apparatus. Duplex sonography revealed that a significant rise of the venous flow velocity could be achieved with an 8.5-fold increase of the venous flow velocity as measured over the popliteal vein. Transcutaneou

Actin polymerization induced by pulsed electric stimulation of bone cells in vitro.

Electric field pulses, capacitively applied to tissue cultures of embryonic bone cells, were shown to induce changes in the state of cellula … n integrated into some supramolecular structure, where it is not accessible to DNAase I. Upon short electric stimulation the distribution changed to 40% G-actin, 12% F-actin and 48% N-actin. 3-Isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX; an inhibitor of cAMP phosphodiesterase), depletion of extracellular calcium, and calmodulin inhibitors abolished this field effect.

Electrical muscle stimulation: a multidisciplinary narrative review.

Electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) is one of the most popular and efficient complementary techniques that mimics the action potential for adjacent muscles and maintains muscle health. Aside from muscular rehabilitation, a promising role for EMS has been reported in a wide range of clinical conditions, from cognitive disorders to metabolic diseases and pain management. However, the clinical response and effectiveness of this method remain variable. In this article, we reviewed the role of EMS in different health-related conditions in order to provide a comprehensive view of this matter.

Electrical stimulation of the motor system after stroke.

RATIONALE: Muscle weakness is a common impairment after stroke. Electrical stimulation that contracts muscles strongly (cyclical electrical stimulation (CES)) may improve voluntary strength, and electrical stimulation during the practice of an activity (functional electrical stimulation (FES)) may improve the performance of that activity. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the benefits and harms of electrical stimulation of the motor system for adults with stroke. Specifically, the objectives were to evaluate whether: • CES is effective at increasing voluntary strength compared with nothing/sham interve

20 years of neuromuscular electrical stimulation in COPD.

Although a lung disease, COPD is also associated with extrapulmonary manifestations including, among others, limb muscle dysfunction. Limb muscle dysfunction is a key systemic consequence of COPD that impacts patients' physical activity, exercise tolerance, quality of life and survival. Deconditioning is the main mechanism underlying the development of limb muscle dysfunction in COPD, which can be partially improved with exercise. However, some patients may not be able to tolerate exercise because of incapacitating breathlessness or unwillingness to undertake whole-body exercise. Alternative t

Tremor Suppression Using Functional Electrical Stimulation.

Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor are two major causes of pathological tremor among people over 60 years old. Due to the side effects and complications of traditional tremor management methods such as medication and deep brain surgery, non invasive tremor suppression methods have become more popular in recent years. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) is one of the methods used to reduce tremor in several studies. However, the effect of different FES parameters on tremor suppression and discomfort level, including amplitude, the number of pulses in each stimulation burst, frequ
