A 70-year-old patient with a chronic cutaneous ulcer treated by minocycline hydrochloride developed hyperpigmentation of the forearms. Biopsy material was studied by light microscopy, electron microscopy and X-ray energy spectroscopy. Pulmonary specimens obtained from ten normal subjects and 53 patients with various pulmonary diseases were studied with energy-dispersive x-ray analysis. The amount of silicon in the pulmonary tissue was determined and expressed as a silicon/sulfur (Si/S) ratio. Three approaches were taken with the aim of defining the optimum conditions of rapid cryopreservation in liquid quenchants. In a theoretical approach, two mathematical models were used. The first is of value in defining the absolute maximum rates of cooling which could be achieved at various depths in the tissues. It has been proposed that calcium ions play a key role in chemical (chelate) binding between the adhesive resin and dentin surface. However, no data is available concerning how calcium ions are distributed at the binding sites. The permeability of the pineal gland to lanthanum was investigated by means of transmission electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis. Different pineal cell populations were studied. Light pinealocytes as well as glial cells were not permeated by the tracer lanthanum, which normally stays extracellularly. Dark pinealocytes showing different degrees of degenerative changes are permeated by lanthanum. The loss of plasma membrane integrity explains the entry of lanthanum into these cells. This study analyzed the calcium and phosphorus content of extracted tooth roots exposed to the in vivo oral environment. 20 teeth were obtained from 16 patients and divided into two groups of 10 teeth each. Thin sections of supragingival calculus from lower anterior teeth of 26 subjects were examined. From each specimen, an average of 10 spectra was collected from a densely-mineralized area less than 100 micron diameter. We report two cases of lymphocytoma cutis caused by pierced earrings, with the results of patch tests and X-ray microanalyses on electron microscopy. We detected zinc through scanning electron microscopy from the specimen of Case 1 and gold and titanium through transmission electron microscopy from Case 2. This is the first report to demonstrate the presence of metal fragments in the lesion, which may suggest the remanence of metal for 20 years, bringing about persistent allergic reaction.

A highly sensitive method to localize aluminum oxide or polyethylene wear particles in biological tissues is presented.
